Zero real words

Here are the words Charlotte can say:
Mommy
Daddy

That's it.  She points and grunts or points and says "BA!" but that's for everything.  She refers to the cat and her bottle as "ba ba."

Is this weird?  I've tried not to be concerned, but I keep reading that she should know more words.

Re: Zero real words

  • Did she have her 15 month appointment yet? What did the pedi say? If she hasn't had it yet, bring it up when she does have it to see what they think.

She did not, but I will ask at that appointment.  I should look to see what's on the development questionnaire for 15 months and use that as a jumping off point.
  • At our appt last week, he asked if she knew 4 words other than mama and dada. We really had to stretch with "wow/whoa", "hi", "woof woof", and "yeah" but that was enough. She still babbles a lot and strings "syllables" together to sound like us with occasional success. The pointing and grunting we get too, all the time, and this act of communication was included on the developmental sheet for her age range. No worries!

  • We still don't even have mama or dada yet. Nothing. A had his appointment today, and the pedi asked a few questions (does he point and grunt? yes. does he make noise throughout the day? yes. Does he understand processes like, if you say are you hungry does he go to his high chair? yes.) and with those answers he said it can be normal. Just to keep talking to him a lot and when he points at something name it and then we will make a determination again at his 18 mo. appt. if he is progressing or if we need to look into a speech eval.

That said, I know a place that doesn't require a referral and does free speech evaluations in my town, and I may look into scheduling something on my own for peace of mind.

  • I wouldn't be concerned if it seems like her language comprehension is on track.

Our 15-month check-up checklist had things like "says 10 words other than Mom and Dad" and "understands 50 words."  I put "sort of" next to both of them.  I'm continually impressed by how many words and instructions she understands, but I wouldn't say that she says 10 words - not discernible ones, anyway.  In addition to mama and dada she says "dog" and "duck" a ton, but that's pretty much it for now.

The weirdest thing on the checklist was "can walk backwards."  DD is pretty agile and I'm sure she could, but I'm not sure I've ever observed it :)

  • We are in exactly the same boat. Just mama and daddy. The dr said at his 15 month appt that it was more important that he could understand things. He is able to follow commands, like bring me your socks, lets put on your shoes and go outside etc. He also said that if he hasn't learned 3 new words by the 18 month appt, we could talk about speech therapy. I hope it doesn't come to that!

Ours said the same thing. DD2 only really says Hi and Dada. The rest of the time she just babbles alien talk.

  • DD says parts of words. I'll go, 'say ball.' & she says 'ba'. 'Say tree' she says 'T'

Talk to you pedi if you are worried but I wouldn't be. Babies all develop differently (I know we hear that all the time) but at least she is saying mama & dada. & points & grunts. Pointing is a big thing at this stage.
  • Albert says mama, dada, and has just started saying all gone.  That's it.  He does point and babble a lot, though, so I'm not worried.

  • I think all of what everyone here is saying sounds like communication. Isn't that what it's all about? Even if LO may not actually verbalize through words we can understand, it sounds like most of the babes on here are still communicating through the pointing, imitation, signing, nodding, and following directions.

Honestly, most of T's words sound like the same thing but in context mean different things.  When he's standing in front of the tub and goes "DA DA" that means "tubby time."  When he says doggie, it's "da da," but when he sees DH, he is also "da da." So I think you probably have nothing to worry about :)

  • What @asales727 said. DS has quite a few words that all sound exactly the same....cheese, keys, tweet. The only words he says very clearly are yes, mama, and dada. No and night sound the same. I think you are well within normal limits, but see what your pedi thinks to ease your mind.

  • I would definitely ask your pedi about it, but it probably isn't anything to be worried about yet. A week or two ago, DS really only said Daddy and Doggie, but he's now up to 6 words. (He had his 15M apt today, and his doc was looking for 5-10 words). So there's probably a breakthrough coming soon!

Of course, 3 of those new words are ball, balloon and boom, which probably sound all the same to anyone else. :)

  • Thanks, ladies! She is so good at recognizing and following directions and answering questions with action (i.e. When we ask if she is hungry, she goes to the high chair) so I am not worried.
