WWYD...Job/Daycare situation

Due to the economy, my DH's position has changed hours....actually his commute has gone from 45mins one way to 1.5-2 hours.  This is throwing our daycare situation into a tailspin since he was the one that would pick up our daughter at the end of the day.  Our LO is watched in someone's home but picking her up at 6:30 -7 pm is too late.  That is the earliest we think somebody (myself or DH) can pick her up.

I started looking around for Daycares that are open late enough and found one with an opening in the infant room.  It is double what we are paying now and cannot afford it.  We can't afford to both not work.

My WWYD question is this....I have a B.Ed and a B.S in Computer Science......working in the software industry.  At the daycare, they have a position for a technology teacher which I could do and enjoy....work where my daughter is being cared for (if they actually hired me.....haven't even submitted a resume yet) but with probably a $15000 pay cut........I think when you figure in everything we will be a little more behind (but doable) financially and I would be able to see my daughter throughout the day......

SO.....WWYD?

  • I would totally apply.  If you are okay with the paycut, which it sounds like you are.
  • Loading the player...
  • i would work where my daughter is hands down.  i'm considering not going back to work at all which IS financially feasible for me, but we would not be able to live quite as comfortably as we do now...but the bottom line is no amount of money can compare to raising my daughter and spending as much time with her as possible.

  • The paycut makes me nervous....but the chance to spend my days in the same building as my munchkin would be something that would make it worth it.

  • That's a no-brainer for me if you can swing it financially.  I'd love to be right there with my DD during the day.

Would you still have to pay the daycare though??

  • That sounds like a good opportunity.  If I was in the situation, I would want to work with my DS.
  • Part of the benefits package is a savings on the daycare tuition.  With that being said, they may not want me but I think I will put in the resume.  Worse they can say is no.

Exactly. It's worth a shot! Good luck!

  • Good luck! I think this sounds almost perfect:) Especially if you get a bit of a discount on the day care cost itself...not to mention the fact that you and your daughter are going to the same place everyday which would eventually cut down on your gas cost (not running to and from a different building etc.)

I would definitely go for it!

  • I would apply. If you think you would enjoy the new job, the non-financial pluses sound like they would outweigh the budget cuts.
  • I have casually put feelers out to the center.....will up date everyone!!
