EBF and weight loss

The maternity pants poll reminded me of this - so I'm curious to see: Do you feel that breastfeeding is helping or hurting your weight loss?

Helping! LO is sucking the life out of me/weight right off me!

Not sure - I don't think it's helping or hurting.

Hurting. My body is definitely retaining some fluff to keep up with BFing!

  • I've been struggling with supply issues from the beginning. If I try to watch calories my supply drops. I make enough to nurse and feed LO but I'm lucky if I'm able to pump 15oz a day (my normal is 12-13oz :( ). So I tend to eat more then I probably need, but I'd rather keep my supply up. I'm just telling myself that I'll eventually lose the weight.... :/. I am trying to go back to eating healthier and just making sure to keep the calories up. I figure the same calories in carrots has to be better then the same calories in cookies :)
  • I am just starving every time I nurse. I don't think I have felt full since I was around 5 months pregnant. I have only lost about half of my pregnancy weight, but I feel like crap if I don't eat something pretty much every time I nurse, including the 3 motn feedings LO still seems to need.

  • I was back to pre pregnancy weight by 6 weeks but I think I have put a few pounds back on since then. I still fit into my pre pregnancy clothes. Once I stop BF I'm going to diet.

  • I'm back to my pre-pregnancy weight and I eat like a horse. I'm always starving and eat all day so I think it's helping me.

  • I can't keep weight on. I'm down below my PP weight, and I'm feeling like sh*t. Excuse for ice cream sundaes every night? Why yes, I think so. I baked a huge pan of hello dolly squares last night, which turned out awful, and I ate three for breakfast.

  • I plateaued a couple of months ago and haven't been able to get the rest of my weight off.  I am struggling to keep up with exercising as much as I would like because by the time I get home with DD, get her taken care of and in bed and everything else done, it's like 9:00 and I'm done.  I'm hungry all the time and if I don't eat, it messes with my supply.  I'm also a major stress eater so that's not helping either.

I'm so ready to have my body back.

  • It helped me lose for the first two months and then I plateaued. I am still 12 lbs above pre-preg weight and have stayed there for almost 3 months. I'm contemplating throwing my scale in the trash. I don't think I will lose it all until weaning happens.

All of this, but I'm probably 15 pounds above pre-preg weight.

  • I gained 60lbs and have lost 50... The first 40 came off really quick then 10 more slowly and now I have 10 left that really doesn't want to leave... But my diet could also be to blame. I eat all the food!

  • I refuse to weigh myself until I'm no longer breastfeeding and back to working out.  If I had to guess, I still have 6-10 pounds to lose.

The majority of my clothes fit but I'm not back into my normal jeans yet.  I'm just not going to worry about it until LO is somewhere between 6-8 months old.  I don't have time to worry about it nor the will to care since I'm living on very little sleep.
  • I got back to pre-preg weight within a month, but I wasn't at my ideal weight when I got pregnant. I have about 10-15 lbs that I'd love to shed, but it's just not melting off the way the pregnancy weight did... And because of what others have said re: supply issues, I'm nervous to mess around with it too much until we are closer to being done BFing. Right now I just try to stay active and eat healthy, but i haven't seen a change on the scale in about a month.

  • I have lost most of my pregnancy weight, but I've stalled out on losing.  I think it's because I eat a LOT during the day.  DD1 is a frequent snacker - and therefore so am I!  Problem is, I don't eat the healthy snacks that she eats :)

  • I am down to 10 below my pre-pregnancy weight (so 35 lbs total) so its definitely working for me.  However, I am also on a dairy/soy free diet for DD which I am sure is having a huge contributing factor.

  • Not only is she nursing nonstop lately but she has MSPI so I can't eat anything with soy or dairy which means I'm on a super clean diet so I'm below my pre pregnancy weight and have to snack all day to not feel famished.

  • Ugh screw each and every One of you who is losing weight easily while breastfeeding. My body is clinging to the last13 pounds it gained during pregnancy and daring me to try to diet them off. If I limit my calories my supply drops. End of story. :(
LOL, yeah, ditto!  I blame 2 years of fertility medication.  Oh and being old.  You youngsters enjoy that fast metabolism.  It is all fun and games right now.  (Unless you have good genes.  Then I am just plain jealous!!)

  • I had plateaued between months two and four. Now I'm 15 pounds below pp weight. But I was heavier than I like to be when I got pregnant. Almost into my "skinny Nicole" jeans! Probably about 5 more pounds. The weight started coming off when I started exercising and cutting back on carbs. So it's probably a combo of eating, bfing, and exercise.
  • I was hovering at 8-10lbs above prepg wt until I went back to work. I started pumping and producing more than she eats. I lost 8lbs almost immediately which was awesome! Now I'm stuck again at 0-2lbs up. I wish I was exercising, I think I could get below pp wt.

  • I have not seen pre-pregnancy weight yet. I still have about 15lbs to go and I only gained 25 with my pregnancy X_X . I'm sure it has everything to do with the fact that I'm hungry all the time and can't kick this donut addiction that started during my pregnancy.

  • I'm two pounds under my pp weight, but my midsection is a hot mess. I'd love to find time to exercise and eat healthier, but all attempts result in a  drop in my supply.

I see your 15, and raise you 20. Shoot me! I gained 50 while pregnant so I guess losing 30 is good. Trying to stay positive. Last time I lost all but 5 lbs by 6 months, and held on to that until I weaned at 13 months. There is no way I'm going to lose 15 lbs by 6 months this time though!

  • I was back to pre-preg weight by 8 weeks post-partum. I had (and still have) an insane oversupply, so I was having to pump from the beginning just to not be miserable. I think that helped.

I pretty much eat like a pig and am not gaining weight at all, but have about an additional 10-12 lbs I need to lose to get back to my old weight. The first 20 came off quickly and I've been this weight since about 6 weeks pp.

This is pretty much me exactly.  My pp clothes fit for the most part (but they were bigger to begin with since I hung on to weight after having M).  But I eat all day long and haven't gained any additional weight.  I'm guessing it'll stay this way until after R is weaned, and that's alright with me!
