Trying to Get Pregnant

False negative test

My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for about 6 months now. I have been tracking my period and have not been late at all until now. In fact I'm usually a day early. I'm 9 days late but 4 pregnancy test say not pregnant. I tried to schedule an appointment with my doctor but they won't see me until I should be 6 weeks pregnant. I don't notice any symptoms of being pregnant. After trying for 6 months I just really want to know now if I'm pregnant. Has anyone else had this happen to them?

Re: False negative test

  • False negatives almost never happen. What is more likely is that you ovulated later than you thought you did, and your period actually isn't late at all. The only thing that will tell you for sure when you ovulated is taking your basal body temperatures and charting (check out Fertility Friend). Tracking your period really doesn't do you much good when you have a cycle that is different than the others. Don't go to the doctor unless you go 60 days without a period or a positive pregnancy test.

  • I have been doing the ovulation chart and the ovulation pee test. My ovulation was right on schedule.
  • This is what everyone else will say... But are you temping? Unless you are then you cant confirm when you ovulated. Cycles change all the time and you probably just O'd late. If you dont get AF in 60 days you should call a DR then.

What does this mean? Are you charting your temps, or tracking ovulation some other way? Also, OPK's only tell you that you're gearing up to O, not that you actually do. That isn't proof that you ovulated.

OPKs cant confirm that you actually ovulated. They only detect the surge getting ready to O but this can happen numerous times in a cycle. I would definitely recommend temping next cycle. It really helps when things like this happen

  • I track by the days in my cycle and with the first response ovulation test. I've never tried temping (?). I'm not really sure what that is or how to do that?
  • OP please read the newbie blog. There is a ton of great info there and it sounds to me like you could really really use it. And a negative test means your not pregnant.

  • Yes, and I wasn't pregnant. 4 negative tests mean you're not pregnant. Sorry. I don't think you can get 4 false negatives. Wait until you get a positive to call your doctor

    It's a BOY

  • Thanks for the advice.
  • Why the fuck are you posting this here if everyone is so rude?

"People are just to sensitive. There's no need for people to rude about it! I have this problem no matter what I post and what board I post on. They need people to monitor their boards to ban people for acting like that. Congrats to you!"

    Obvious troll is obvious.
  • Huh? Did OP edit or something?
  • I was just looking for advice, not bitchyness. Take that somewhere else.
  • Seriously.......

  • LOL @ that inappropriate flag. It's not a dislike button, sorry. You can go ahead and remove that now. Inappropriate flagging will get you banned.

I think I know what the C in ccenter1 stands for... stop flagging people! Especially for innocuous statements like "Oooooh we got a live one!"

And you got advice. I'm sorry you didn't hear "you're totes preggo!" like you wanted. You took 4 tests. You're not pregnant. Educate yourself

You're right.  People, stop it.  If you think she's a troll, just ignore her posts.  You should feel ashamed.  What if it was you?  What if you really didn't know and were just looking for advice and this is how you were treated.

FYI, you CAN get false negatives.  Wait until you are 6 weeks out.

    You are terrible.

  • I am pretty sure that a negative test means you are not currently pregnant.  If you think you may be then test again in a few days-week.

I wouldn't insult people then ask for their help, so I wouldn't find myself in this situation to be able to relate.

Also, sources. Just give us sources.

And no, you can get a negative, because you're not pregnant at that time. If you "wait until you are six weeks out" (where'd you even pull that arbitrary number from? Every woman's cycle is different) and re-test with a positive result, it is because it was enough time for implantation to occur, making you now pregnant.

Just because a test doesn't say what you want it to say doesn't make it a false result.

Seriously, you believe you can't get a false negative?  You are pregnant the day after your egg implants, but many people will still get a negative on an HPT.  You have to have enough HCG in your urine for the test to give a positive.

You are unlikely to get a false positive, but false negatives happen.  Testing too early after conception, testing later in the day, and not properly performing the test can all cause false negatives.

I told her to wait until she was six weeks out, because that's the earliest the doctor will see her anyway (see her post).  So, by then, she'll either get a BFP or she will have gotten AF.
  • I've always been one of those O'd on CD20 or CD21 gals.

As of today, which is CD42, I have yet to O, even though all of my signs said that I already did. Sometimes your body just gets all fucky.

And @beckajw? The door is that way.

Ah ha ha ha, "the door is that way."  Umm, thanks?
  • 1) LOVE Flavor of Love.

    2) My first cycle trying I got a positive OPK and then an IUI.  I never ovulated.  Never got my period.  But I was not pregnant.  So.... OPKs don't really tell you whether or not you *actually* ovulate.  They just tell you you're about to.  And then Mother Nature can be like "LOL JK" and stop it from happening.
