Hitting

My DS is 15 months old and does not do anything gently! He will run over to the dog and smack her on the head or face and just laughs. He also tries to hit me and my DH. We redirect saying gentle or easy and then petting the dog gently with his hands but it just doesn't stick. Is there anything else we can do? I know he will eventually get it but didn't know if there is anything else we can do!
Thanks!

Re: Hitting

  • When T hits me, I sit him on the floor immediately, firmly say "No hitting/not nice" or something like that, and ignore him for a few seconds until he starts crying and comes over to me, then I ask him to apologize and give me a hug. Ignoring is the only thing that works for us.

For hitting the dog, we are still working on that...

  • we always say gentle or you don't hit mommy/daddy. We have been working with gentle for a good 5 months or so because of the cats. Most of the time it works but sometimes we have to grab her had and so no hit. After that is when she starts crying, but it gets her to stop hitting then we distract with a toy and move on.

  • You are lot alone. We don't have a dog but mine hit each other and I don't think they mean to. They just can't judge how hard that "pat" is going to be. I usually say "no hitting, that's not nice" and they cry because they heard the word no and then turn around and do it again. I don't really know what else to do at this age either.
