Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Milk allergy

Hi all! My son is 11 months and has a milk allergy. Anybody else in the same boat? It's so hard to start feeding any table foods because of this. Seems like a lot of things have milk. Also I was wondering if anybody that has also dealt with this could give me ideas on how to transition into milk when he's 12 months. He's in soy formula so I figure soy milk would be the first to try but I would love to try real milk at some point also.

Re: Milk allergy

  • I wouldn't do soy milk at 1 year. Soy and rice milk have a ton of added sugar in them and not enough fats. Look into coconut milk, almond milk (with the extra protein and unsweetened), and hemp milk.

  • Would I need to be careful with almond milk and nut allergies?
  • Unless he has a nut allergy, nope. By 1 year you should know if he does or does not have a nut allergy.

  • Unless nuts allergies run in a persons family I've never heard of people delaying nuts. I think both my kids have had almond or peanut butter by 1 year. Then again we don't delay any foods except honey for the kids.

  • Ok. I still don't see the problem here. She either tries it or she doesn't. I just gave alternative milk recommendations. By 1 year though most people have given their kids nut stuff either knowingly or unknowingly.

  • I have not introduced nuts. Been pretty careful with a lot because the milk allergy was pretty gross when it showed its symptoms, I didn't want the poor little guy to go through anything like that again.
I will most likely hold off until I talk to my pedi for sure but wanted ideas to ask her when we do go. Thanks for all opinions ladies!
  • I put in the unknowingly part since most baked goods from a bakery are cross contaminated. :P It's not a huge deal. I've never been told these recs if it hadn't been for TB. So I guess it must be a regional thing. All 4 of my peds were telling us to give our kids peanut butter or nut butters by 6-9 months. Delaying of foods don't prevent allergies anyways.

  • Also, I only said that cuz it gets a lot of love. I personally prefer coconut or hemp milk for babies.

  • Check with your allergist or pedi (whoever is treating your LO for the allergies). Our allergist wanted my DD to stay on formula till 18 mo. When we switched from the hypoallergenic, we went with almond milk. I was comfortable introducing nuts since we had already been through 2 rounds of allergy testing. I chose almond b/c it was easily available, had more fat and calories than the rice milk, and honestly part of it was appearance. The rice milk was way thinner and looked more watery than the almond. We also had some success with goat milk until our Walmart stopped carrying it. We also tried the flax milk (it was high in fat and calories) but it did terrible things to DD's stomach.
