High blood pressure ladies - how's it going for you?

Well I knew it was coming soon as it's been borderline a few times. I dealt with this with my first pregnancy in the 3rd trimester and was diagnosed with pregnancy induced hypertension. My blood pressure at my appointment was 152/100 on Friday. They switched my doctor because for whatever reason and I had to see the doctor who delivered my son and he hadn't seen me since my son passed away in December. So anyway, long story short I have to do a 24 hour urine collection on Friday. Awesome.

I know we had a few ladies with bp issues. How are things going now?

Re: High blood pressure ladies - how's it going for you?

  • I have monthly appiontments with the hypertension center.  They hook me up to the machine and it measures cardiac output and other useful stuff.  I am usually in the box (yay) but can't be on my regular HBP meds (I have kidney disease) because of being a pregnant, so I am grateful everytime I am in the box.

I also have a 24 hour urine catch every month (mostly I believe because of the kidney thing though)  If you haven't had one, it's really easy and not as gross as you imagine.  If you have had one before, then lots of luck hope your numbers are good.

This is my first one for this pregnancy, I probably did 6 or 7 with my first pregnancy in the 3rd trimester. I'm sure everything is fine. It's just going to be a vicious circle from now on because I'm going to get myself all worked up before my appointments now. I'm not sure why they don't try bp meds with me to see how I do on them, high bp runs in my family.

  • I'm (mostly) only high at the doctor. I've given them my bp records from home previously. He said he believes that it only jumps high at my appointments, but they can only go by the numbers that they see right then.

Really? I mean if I'm crazy high they will take it again. They've had me bring my machine in to make sure it matches their reading. Maybe since mine is preexisting and they know what's causing it they just allow it.
Yeah, I've brought my machine in and it has matched theirs. They took my bp again and it was still high at 142/100. I was nervous to speak to this doctor because of what happened to my son (we lost him to SIDS) and he delivered him. I was a bundle of nerves, but apparently that doesn't matter. I asked the nurse to take it again before I spoke with the doctor but she said they'd wait til I saw him first. Fine, whatever. So it was high of course. I knew it would be, I told them that before they even took it. The doctor joked "I'm not even wearing a white coat!" I told him that there must be something else about them that makes me nervous then.

  • Mine has been stable since I have been out of work, though symptoms still point to preeclampsia. Something about some artery or something like that having lower flow on the left side during my ultrasound a few days ago is a red flag for it, even though my BP is ok now. I was in the 150s for systolic but it's been in the 120s for about a week now. I've had so far 3 of the 24 hour urine collections. This last one my protein levels increased, but not at an unsafe point yet. I guess normal levels are 150 and I was at 230, I will have another urine collection for sure, more if my BP peaks again. I only ever have high BP during pregnancy, I can almost tell just by the way I feel if it's going to be high or not. I get this tight and pounding feeling in my neck. Being at home and out of stress has helped ease the symptoms and I even lost 3 pounds at this last visit, so that tells me my swelling has gone down too.

As far as getting really high measurements, my experience has been that they send me to L&D right away anytime this has happened. They don't even wait and take it another time. I have had to go to the hospital and they put me in a bed, gowned up and everything and start a NST which includes taking my BP every 5-10 minutes to see what it's really doing. On one they made me stay at the hospital for my 24 hour collection. Thats how I ended up with an induction at 35.5 weeks, though he cooked for another 5 days because he did not want to come out. So far I haven't had to be sent to the hospital for this pregnancy.

Yup this isn't my first rodeo, I dealt with this in my first pregnancy. I wasn't put on bedrest until 36 weeks I believe. @WookieesCookies, I can tell when mine is going to be high too. My chest gets all red and splotchy and I just have that feeling and I can't control it. I haven't had swelling or any other signs. it's just a pain going in there knowing it's going to be high everytime now because I can't control my anxiety over the situation. I had multiple immediate trips to L&D from my appointment with my first pregnancy, I can just see all of this happening again. :(

  • Mine has been high for a few weeks now. It started the same time with DD. 24 hr urine was only a small trace of protein. I have chronic migraines and headaches all the time anyway so they can't use that as an indication for anything. It hasn't been too terrible on average about 140/98. It has spiked up to 150's/102. I am thinking my next appt he will put me on Labetalol like he did last time.

  • just waiting on my referral to fetal medicine unit, so can discuss medication, having traces of protein showing up so been for bloods and urine collection a few times, will get a new action plan on Thursday when see midwife have been trialing modified bed rest on the doctors recommendation so hopefully the results are a little lower this week

  • Somehow missed this the other day. I had bp issues first pregnancy and have been watching my numbers slowly creep up too. I get the whole anxiety bit too which doesn't help. No swelling so far so that's good. fX it stays somewhat stable but I'm doubting it.
  • I started walking last night. Maybe that will help a little. I have a feeling the weight gain is part of the problem too. High blood pressure also runs in my family, so maybe I'm battling the inevitable?

I am also dealing with left pulmonary artery stenosis which is a narrowing of the artery in the heart leading to the lungs. I'm sure that adds to it. This was picked up about 5 months after my first was born.
