Kids' song lyrics

I remembered the lyrics to Baa Baa Black sheep as:
Baa baa black sheep, have you any wool?
Yes, sir, yes, sir, three bags full.
One for my master and one for my dame
and one for the little boy who lives down the lane.

But all of the books and kids' CDs I have right now end with:
"But none for the little boy who lives down the lane."
Which makes me think - What? He has three bags and has only given two away! Why can't he give one to the little boy? Selfish black sheep.

What version do you know, and are there any lyrics to children's songs that surprise you now that you're maybe listening more closely?
Another one for me is Goosy Goosy Gander, but I don't want ot make this too long.

Re: Kids' song lyrics

  • Lol, I've only ever heard it one one and one. I don't like Rock A Bye Baby. Really? The bough breaks and baby falls? No wonder our kids are afraid to go to sleep! ;)

    Anniversary

  • I sing "Hush, Little Baby" to my LO all the time and can't help think about how materialistic it sounds.  The whole song is about buying all this stuff.    I know the end says that the baby will still be the sweetest even if the horse and cart break, but still!
  • My brother sang rock a bye baby to DS once.... So creeeeeeeeeeepy!!!!

  • Yeah, I think Rock a Bye baby is one of those classic "what the heck?" songs :)

The lyrics to Goosey Goosey Gander (it's on one of the kids' CDs I got - I don't remember ever singing it growing up) are:
Goosey Goosey Gander, wither shall I wander?
Upstairs and downstairs and in my lady's chambers
There I met an old man who wouldn't say his prayers
I took him by the left leg and threw him down the stairs.

    What. The. Heck.

I feel so weird singing along with it with DD, but I guess another FFFC is that I'm too lazy to stand up, walk over to the CD player, and skip it. I'm also too lazy to find batteries for the CD player's remote.

  • Yep, that's the version I learned, too! But lately I think I've heard 2 different ones that end with "but none for the little boy..." At least one of them was a youtube video. I'll have to see if I can find it again.

  • Isn't "Ring around the Rosie" about the plague? I feel like I remember learning that.

Yep. People would carry posies of herbs with them that were supposed to protect them from the bad fumes (hence: pockets full of posies). I don't remember what the "rosie/rosy" refers to, but the "ashes, ashes, we all fall down" I think is pretty obvious.
