Hey ladies. I had my first cervix check today and was totally nervous. It was not painful at all! I'm sure some are but mine was not. Just wanted to assure anyone else who was nervous. They are not always bad!
Thanks for the heads up! I feel like this might be the same as the GD testing when a lot of people said the drink was horrible and I didn't really find it all that bad.
I really think it has alot to do with the person doing it. I've had cervical checks from my OB that don't hurt at all, then I got passed off one time to an on call OB who was rough. I always found though that OB's are generally pretty gentle with their patients vs a non-patient of theirs.
Glad yours wasn't painful! I've gotten a cervix check every week for the last 10 weeks and no matter who does it, it always hurts. I think it's just me
My cervix check at 35 weeks didn't hurt, but I did bleed after it. I think I will get another one on Tuesday since I will be in my 38th week. They said they don't do them regularly until you are at least 38 weeks.
My OB, who is also pregnant, actually asked if I wanted a check today at my 36w appointment after my group b swab. I looked at her like she had 6 heads and asked if anyone ever actually wants one, we laughed and I declined for this week. They start them at 37w so I know this is probably the last time I'll get to pass on this.

Maybe they start to become more painful as you dilate more? Not sure if this is true, but throwing it out there. My cervix was closed, but softening when I had my check.
Well on the other side, I was anticipating nothing and mine hurt like hell. So I wasn't prepared for that at all. They've since gotten better, but I think I'm declining from here on out anyways.
I never had one hurt until yesterday. I've also had bleeding since and it's been about 26 hours. It shocked the crap out of me to hear I'm 1.5-2cm dilated and 50% effaced.
See I find sex very painful and the cervix check wasn't bad at all. Kinda just felt like getting fingered lol. Always find it kind of awkward with F in the room when my male OB does it though. I won't look at either of them while its going on lol
Eta: it didn't hurt at 36 weeks when I was 0% And it didn't hurt 37 weeks when I was 1cm and 50% so idk if it has to do with that
For me it apparently depends on the day lol I've had some hurt, and some not, different drs, and the same! For example, I've had 2 so far this pregnancy, both done by the same Dr. The first didn't hurt, the second did. So who knows. But they are definitely not always painful.
I haven't had one yet this time, but last time it only hurt when I was actually in labor. All of the routine check-up checks were uncomfortable, but not painful.
I'm glad yours didn't hurt, I get mine done next week, and I'm still terrified about it because I know it still hurts for some people. I hope I get lucky and it won't be too bad.
I had my first one yesterday. It hurt. I really think it's due to not having anything go in there for so long though. When I got home, I told SO "yeah..we absolutely cannot have sex. I can still feel where I was. .violated. " I'm not dilated at all. My ob said that means we're on track.
How important are cervix checks? My OB said she would do one at the next apt and I'm debating telling her I only want the strep b test done. I'll be 35w2d at my next apt so really is there a need to do one yet? After the pointless ultrasound she sent me for yesterday at the hospital (the tech wouldn't let DH in the room, wouldn't turn the screen for me to see, and made me lay FLAT on by back... all to tell me everything looks great and right on track...)
They aren't that important. They don't do them unless requested at the birth center I go to. Knowing how dilated/effaced you are doesn't really tell you anything. Someone could be 3 cm dilated for weeks and not go into labor. Another person could not be dilated at all and go into labor the next day.
Mine was not very comfortable At all.... And then as this is going on the back of my thigh cramped up! It was very glorious!!! Thick cervix, zero dilation...
I had my first one yesterday and it hurt quite a bit when she put the speculum in but the actual poking around in there checking my cervix didn't hurt at all.

Mine didn't really hurt, but it also wasn't comfortable. Dr said it hurts more if you tense up, or if you are dilated at all. I tried to relax and am not dilated, so maybe that's why I didn't think it was too bad?
Had my 1st one this week at 35 weeks, and it didn't hurt at all. I was 1 cm and 50% effaced. The only time I remember it hurting (like a bitch too!) was when they checked me the first time when I was in labor with DD.

I couldn't help but tense up! This guy is putting something in my vagina and it hurts! I'm kind of really scared of labor now though. If I had a hard time with something skinny going in there, how am I going to handle a baby coming out??
I've never had one where I was less than 5 cm dilated so idk if I am a good judge but mine didn't hurt. I was pretty freaked about PTL at the time though so maybe I am not remembering correctly.
You don't have to do cervical checks. I usually only have mine when I'm ready to push. Unless there is some medical reason you don't need to do it. If you want it done then yes they are not uncomfortable unless your having a contraction. And they always want to check during a contraction to see how productive they are.
I declined cervical checks at my 36 and 37 week appointments and I plan to continue declining them until I'm in the hospital. You really don't need them at this point. They mean nothing at this point and can mess with your head.
I've had two done, and... Ouch! One was done by my male OB and the other done by a female PA. They both hurt me. Next time I'll try now to tense up. Hopefully it helps.

I would definitely second this; as advice for those who haven't had it. Especially if they use the speculum. Try not to tense up, it really makes it worse. Just breathe and relax and it won't be nearly as bad.
Re: Cervix check psa
They start them at 37w so I know this is probably the last time I'll get to pass on this.
