I am pregnant with my second little bundle of joy. With my first I was diagnosed with pre-e early on. (28 weeks) My DD was born at 32 weeks. She was healthy and only spent a month in the NICU. My OB told me that I am going to go through it all again (which I already knew). I have been doing some research and read that it always doesn't happen with every pregnancy. I was wondering if any of you ladies had any first hand experience with this?
Re: Pre-e question
There has been some research looking at the rate of reoccurrence in subsequent pregnancies, but more is needed. The findings suggest the risk of having it again is approximately 20%, however experts cite a range from 5-80%, depending on when you had it in a prior pregnancy, and how severe it was. If you had preeclampsia during your first pregnancy, you may get it again. While repeat occurrence is often milder, no one can predict for sure. You should be watched carefully after a preeclamptic pregnancy.
The risk of preeclampsia increases if you have any of the risk factors mentionedabove, or have developed chronic hypertension or diabetes since your previous pregnancy, or if you are having IVF, twins or other multiples.

get a second opinion - or another dr
there is NO guarantee that because you had pre e with your first that you will develop it with your second, third, etc
as a matter of fact... 'first child with a father' is considered a risk factor for pre e (so is first time moms)

Agreed with the other girls, just becaue you had it the first time doesn't mean you will again. I happen to have it again but it came a few weeks later in this pregnancy and so far is being controled with BP meds. Well the BP part is.
You def need to get a second opinion if your doc is telling you this/
It is definitely not guaranteed. I have spent a lot of time researching this (i.e. reading academic research studies - not dr google) and there are many things thought to increase your risk factors for reoccurrence - how early and how severe you got it before, whether you developed HELLP, length of time between pregnancies, etc.
EDIT: But even if it was early and severe (as mine was), most of the "reoccurrence" rates I have seen have only been about 60%...far from guaranteed.

Lurking but wanted to respond...
I had severe pre-e with my first daugther and had an emergency induction at 35w. She was healthy but I was VERY sick and was in the hospital for nearly a week after delivering her due to multiple complications. The pre-e started around 28w and continuously got worse. Each week that passed was a blessing.
This time, I have had zero symptoms of pre-e and am 34w today. My blood pressure has been normal (I take it every day at home since it's generally higher in the OB's office), no protein in my urine, no vision issues or headaches, and it's been an uneventful pregnancy.
There is NO guarantee you will get it again and I agree with pp's that you should get another doctor. Best wishes to you.
I know several people who had the first pregnancy and not in subsequent pregnancies. My sister and Niece both had it first and not subsequent. I had it on my first and am hoping not to have it again although it is likely my BP will go up since I have a preexisting condition.
GL and just stay healthy. There are a few things you can do to lessen the chances but I don't know what they are check google
