Skin care woes

Morning ladies,
I have oily/acne prone skin-before I was pregnant I was using a lot of harsh chemicals on my skin to keep it clear. When I got pregnant, I stopped and started using all natural products...well my skin is horrendous. I'm currently using lush stuff, and I do like it. My skin doesn't react to it though.
What are you guys using? I'm trying to keep to the natural stuff. Anyone using any face masks?

Re: Skin care woes

  • If it's really bad acne, I doubt natural stuff is going to make a huge difference.  I had terrible cystic acne with my last pregnancy, and the only thing that helped is a prescription for Finacea.  Both my OB and dermatologist said it's safe while pregnant and breastfeeding.  I've used it this entire pregnancy and have had no issues with my skin.

  • "Natural" stuff isn't always best. Certain plant and fruit extracts can be very irritating to skin. Irritation can then lead to break outs.

I'm currently using Olay foaming face wash and some left over St. Ives green tea scrub. I've also been known to use a Mia electric brush.

paulaschoice.com gives good product reviews and is helpful for finding out if a product is going to be irritating or not. She's obviously biased towards her own products, but it's been enlightening to me to find out some products that I thought would be great are actually not great at all.

  • I should note that Paula from paulaschoice.com also has oily skin, so many of her products are geared more towards people with that problem, as opposed to those with dry skin (like me in the winter). I've used her products before and was happy with them.

  • Queen helen's mint julep mask, is really cheap but an effective mask for me. Also, I use st. Ives apricot scrub as a mask. And I also use a tea tree oil bar soap -- purchased at Wholefoods -- with my clairisonic, and this combo works wonders for my oily skin.
  • I don't have a product I used, but giving up dairy cleared up my skin.

I think everyone knows my love for Finacea on this board by now too. :) I had awful rosacea and tried every natural remedy out there for at least a year before I finally caved and went to a dermatologist who prescribed Finacea. It's the only thing that helped me too. I'm really big on using natural products and I even went off Finacea for a while in first tri even though my dermatologist and ob both said it was fine to keep using, but within a month I was back to terrible skin, or as DH puts it "your face looks very angry!" So now I'm back to using it and my face is not so angry anymore.

  • I use the clinque line.

I still get mild breakouts from time to time, but my skin is reacting to pregnancy differently this time...

Last time I cleared up, eczema went away as did my allergies.. this time not so lucky !

  • I did not have any skin issues prior to getting pregnant, but I've developed some pretty bad rosacea and spotting since getting knocked up.  I'm using a clarisonic with cetaphil, it helps, and I moisturize a ton (my skin is prone to being dry though).  I'm hoping it clears up once my little guy is born!  Is Finacea good for rosacea?

Finacea is the only thing that has ever worked for my acne, too!

@bethst Yeah, I think it's actually made for rosacea, but it also helps with acne.  I would definitely check it out!

That's what my dermatologist prescribed it for. I had great skin until I hit about 30, then started getting the pink cheeks but things were under control with natural stuff... and then it got really bad with my first pregnancy and when I had fibroids. My skin tends towards the drier side too, especially in winter, and when it was at its worst it would get flaky and really irritated along with the redness and acne, mostly on my cheeks and nose. So my derm prescibed finacea plus a sulfur face wash.

I normally use as few products as possible to keep from irritating my skin so that's all I do these days, but when it's super dry out I'll use a little bit of pure virgin coconut oil to moisturize at night.

  • Honestly, this is gonna sound crazy but I have been recently using Bare Minerals foundation. It's a natural product and completely cleared up my pregnancy break-outs, I know it sounds crazy, but it really did! Finally chucked my Belli facial products (they weren't working for me anyway).
