Thrashing and tugging on his ears

I would give anything for my little dude to talk right now! Something is making him uncomfortable and I wish I could help him feel better. He has had a cold on and off for 3 weeks and it seems to be finally going away. He's been extremely fussy and sleeping horribly throughout the whole ordeal. At night he thrashes like crazy when I try to lay him down, hitting himself in the head and then getting all riled up. I've noticed lately he seems to be swatting at and tugging/rubbing his ears especially when nursing. He seems very agitated. We were at the pedi last week for the cold and what we were afraid was an ear infection and he said he didn't have one. Any moms have experience with these thrasher types? He hates to have his arms held down and/or restricted so I'm not sure if a swaddle-like option would work? Any thoughts? Fyi he's almost 4 months

  • The ear infection could have developed after the appt. Is he rolling over?

  • Could be teething!! Or ear infection

  • I would absolutely bring him back.  An ear infection develops as a side effect of other illness so it's very reasonable that at the appointment last week he hadn't developed one yet.  It sounds like a classic ear infection.

  • He can't roll over completely yet. He has been chewing on his hands and drooling a lot too. I think it may be teething as he seems to be most irritated when he's nursing.
  • My DD tugged at her ears a lot when she started teething. According to her doctor it is very common with babies. She was also a a huge drooler.
  • My LO also tugged at his ears a lot when he started teething. He is now 5 months and has 2 teeth!
