For those taking iron supplements: TMI

edited November 2013 in January 2014 Moms
I am a slacker and even though I've been "taking" iron supplements since 12 weeks, I just now got serious about it as I thought I was managing ok with diet but apparently am not.

Did you notice a change in your stool color? Like much darker? A quick Google search told me that sometimes happens but it's not in the insert and also isn't something my doctor mentioned.

Also, did you start to get nauseous all day again? I'm nauseous all day even though I take my supplement before I go to bed.

Yes and yes. Enjoy seeing the dark poop now. Eventually I only saw mine once a week.
Lol @wilburbud - this is me too.

But OP - I never noticed any issues with feeling nauseous.  I take my Feremax at lunch time with a Vitamin C tablet and haven't had a problem at all.  Previously, I was on Palafer and even though I'd take it at night, I would constantly feel unwell.
  • I'm with the yes and yes group. The slow release iron has helped me with the belly aches and queasiness.
  • Yes to the dark almost greenish poop. Also, fun fact, if you continue to take it while breastfeeding (which is definitely a good idea at least while you're healing up) it can turn baby's poop green/darkish too! Learned that one the hard way!

  • My iron is chewable with vitamin C included- cherry flavored yum!!
    I highly recommend chewables.
  • I realized today that I'd forgotten my supplement for days when I had a normal colored BM.

I've not had the nausea, but I take mine at night.

  • I have had the first problem not the nausea. I take mine before bed and if I burp it is the worst taste ever from the iron pill. They have made me feel tons better though, so ill take the nasty burps.
  • Yes and yes. After complaining to my mom about this she ordered me a supplement online called Gentle Iron. After switching to that I haven't had any issues.

What brand do you use & where did you get them?

  • Thanks ladies.  I actually take the slow release iron and I take it at bedtime with my prenatal so maybe I'm just having a repeat of morning sickness.  I'll definitely be upping my fiber, water, and Colace though!
  • I haven't been nauseous, but the poop color is normal (but still weird to me). I'm just really thankful the iron pills don't seem to make me constipated (*knocks on wood*)!

  • I second floradix and also the solgar natural iron. Both make your poop dark, but won't make you constipated or sick.
