Question for Helmet Mom's!

Hello,
May 13 mom here.  I know there is some mom's with babies wearing helmets on here. I have a few questions, please!!

I have already been having to argue with our Orthotist because they are stuck on my LO wearing his helmet until he is a year. He started at 5 months and his Cephalic Index was 97 at the beginning so there really isn't any need to wear it 7 months. But they just keep saying a year because they say his soft spot has to close before they consider taking it off. Has anyone else heard this?

Anyway, we had his one month check up today and they took measurements but when I asked for his CI number, they wouldn't give it. They said, "we don't do that until the end."  I said well how do you know when the end is?? They said a year. I said, I thought the end was CI of 91 or better. They said well we look visually at the end and when it gets close to a year we will give you a CI number.

Is this normal???????

That seems crazy to me. We did a follow up scan today after being in it just 6 weeks. Eta - they have told me her numbers whenever I ask.

  • Ugh! I am so frustrated. Do I try and find a new orthotist? Everything I read on the internet indicates 3-4 months in a helmet. It is so frustrating that they are not even willing to consider graduating him before a year.

  • We had our appt with the neurologist last week and she said probably 3-6 months in it, LO is already 6 months so that would put us at a year. I'm hoping more for 3 months though . We go next week to get fitted
  • I would be incredibly upset and that does not sound normal to me at ALL! Our girls' CI index was 97 & 98 at their first appt before the helmets. After 4 weeks we were down to a 91 & 89. I forgot to ask their numbers after two months wear but I know they increased enough to be off by Christmas. Which would end up being roughly 3.5 months in the helmet. I was first told 4-6mo. But we stuck to it and they've done great and their soft spot is near closing. They also are sitting up on their own and sleeping on their bellies so there isn't too much concern with taking them off "too soon" per say.
I find it complete and utterly WRONG that they won't share the numbers with you. We get an updated chart saying what they measured last time and what they measure this time every time we visit as well as at the end, they'll get a certificate for graduating and all the pictures that our specialist took to document their progress.

FWIW: our girls started helmet therapy at 5 months old.
