When to call doctor

So I'm 5 weeks pregnant by my count but I haven't called my doctor yet to set up an appointment. When should I do it? This is my first time and I don't want to call and sound like an idiot calling to soon.

Re: When to call doctor

  • This is my first as well and my doc wanted to see me at 8 weeks.  I've had my appointment scheduled since last week (4 weeks).  Appointments can fill up with my doc so I wanted to make sure I got in as soon as I was able too!

  • You won't sound like an idiot. I called today even thought I know from my previous pregnancy that they won't be seeing me until December just get the appointment set up. Never a bad idea to get your appointment set up, and at a good time for you, even if it isn't all that soon. Plus calling is the only way to know what your dr's office does since it seems they don't all do it the same.

  • Call now. They will probably schedule you for an 8 or 10 week ultrasound. Mine wanted me to come in right away for blood work and urine since I'm a new patient.

  • I would go ahead and call. All offices seem to do it differently. Mine, you can call as soon as you suspect because the first appt is just a pee test and a "get you on the books appt" before they will schedule a proper exam for 11 weeks. Others want you to come at 8 weeks. It really just depends. They can't fault you for not knowing how their office does it if this is your first time.

  • Call for sure!

  • I would go ahead and call too. I happened to have a follow up appointment yesterday, the same day I got my BFP, from some lower abdominal and ovarian pain which they did an u/s on hence the follow up. My OB sent me for a blood draw to check my numbers and told me to come back in two weeks pending how high my numbers are. My OB is usually booked two weeks out so call now just let them know how far you are and they'll schedule accordingly.

  • I called at 3 wks 6 days. With the advancement in HPTs I'm guessing they get calls pretty early these days. If you wait there will only be less time slots, call now!

  • Definitely call soon.  My OB/GYN is insanely busy and didn't have any openings whatsoever until early Dec. (I made my appointment two weeks ago).  I didn't even get a choice for day or time, just had to go with what they had.  They like to do appointments at 8 weeks, but I couldn't get in until 9.  I consider myself lucky that it's not taking longer.  So yea, you want to make sure you schedule early.
  • I would call.  I called when I was 4 weeks for my appt.

  • Just call and say you've had a pos hpt. They will let you know at how many weeks they want to see you. My ob wants to see me at 7wks. Earlier the better so you get a better pick of days and times you can go in! Congrats!

  • Thanks for the advice ladies! I'm going to call today!
  • I called at four weeks for my 6 week u/s and appt my OB/GYN is always super booked!

  • I have a hypo-active thyroid, so my doctor always told me to call immediately if I was pregnant so she could adjust my levels. I went in at 4 weeks, and they did blood work (adjusted my thyroid meds), and they scheduled my first "prenatal" visit for 6 weeks. Sounds a little earlier than some others- so I would call now! My doctor was great at answer my 3000 questions too. First pregnancy :)

  • My OB's office was booked out a month for the paperwork appointment. They won't do the initial appointment with the doctor until after the paperwork appointment, so I have to wait another 2 weeks after the paperwork. Definitely call.

My dr office is the same way. I had to schedule an intake/paperwork appt before seeing the dr but I had bleeding so they have seen me before that because my intake appointment was 3 weeks away. I am glad they did!

  • I called the day after I got my BFP. I would have called the same day but it was a Sunday. I was 4 weeks. You never know how quickly the dr will book up so I figure it's good to plan ahead.
