I think I might have strep throat

I have had a scratchy throat since Thursday. I figured it was from having the furnace on and cold dry air outside. We recently had a drastic drop in temperature outside. The past couple of nights my throat gets worse at night, I have a feeling of pin pricks in the back of my throat making it hard to sleep. I have tried a humifier the past few nights but it hasn't helped. I always thought the pain from strep had to be severe but now I don't know. I am having a rough time tonight and finally decided to get up and check my throat with a flash light. Hard to do to yourself but I noticed some large white patches on the back of my tongue. Thats why I am worried now.

Unfortunately this is very bad timing. I took vacation days on Friday and Monday, so I am just coming off of a 4 day weekend. I really don't want to call in sick, but I am thinking I need to see my doctor. :( blah. Just venting.

  • Timing might not be right but you def need to see your doctor and get taken care of ASAP! Strep throat is often accompanied by a high fever which can be very dangerous being preggo and all! After you start antibiotics you will feel much better in no time. Best of luck! Hope you feel better soon.

  • Thank you. And I agree, even though the timing sucks and my boss won't be thrilled I don't want to risk anything happening to the baby. I don't really feel like I have a fever, we don't have a thermometer at the moment, ours broke and we never think about buying a new one. I guess now would be a good time to get one. I know fever usually comes with strep but my major warning flag right know is the white patches and needle feeling in my throat.

  • Not to mention, strep is very contagious. Not so nice to infect your coworkers :-) BTW, I had strep all the time as a child and didn't always get a fever right away. I did get fevers after waiting because I was scared to death of throat cultures and I wouldn't tell my mom my throat hurt so I wouldn't have to go to the doctor. Go! :-)

  • I would schedule the first appointment before work starts. Tell work if it's nothing you will be in after, but if it's strep like you suspect you will need to wait until your antibiotics kick in.

I got it all the time too. I can tell right away if I have it without a culture. Of course I still have to go in and see the dr, get the culture and the meds, but I always know. My brother was a carrier and would have it without symptoms in his body. Bam I would get it constantly. We were only 13 months apart so sharing toys we put our mouths on/drinks etc always got me sick.
  • That sucks! I woke up with a sore throat too and am headed off to the dr. You can't be too safe when there is a baby involved.

  • Well, the results of the strep test are not back yet. But the doctor said my throat looked very red and swollen. And I have a swollen lymph node in my neck/jaw area. She went ahead and put me on amoxicillan because it looks like I really could have strep. All I know is my throat and gotten worse and worse over the past few hours. It feels like its on fire at this point. :( and the swab they used on my throat made me gag way more than normal, it took her 3 tries because I gagged so much. Joys of being pregnant.

  • I am a frequent tonsilitis sufferer. Sore throat, sometimes to the point of not being able to swallow, white patches, reddness, swollen glands...and ive never once tested positive for strep. I usually start on antibitotics and feel better within 24hrs. Heres hoping youll wake up feeling a little better tomorrow!

  • I've only had strep once and had it for over a week before I knew it was strep! I thought the same thing you did - that it would be painful because that's all I ever heard. It just felt like a sore throat that wouldn't go away, and my temperature never hit 100. Some of us are lucky I guess! I normally try to go to the doctor as little as possible, but since you're pregnant, I would say definitely go.

Oh I dread that bloody throat swab!  I thought I was getting strep last week because it was going around my school and my throat was hurting.  Turns out it was my acid reflux causing the scratchy, soreness in my throat.  I've been back on zantac and feeling better.  Hope the antibiotics have you feeling better very soon!
