Flying...while pregnant

I know this has been discussed, my search skills are poor. I am not going to SIL's wedding in February in Florida because I'll be 28 weeks and that's just too far along for me. But now I'm considering traveling to Philadelphia so my DD can see her cousin. I'd be 21 weeks hitting 22. My OB says it's fine so long as things are healthy. Did anyone fly this far along?

Re: Flying...while pregnant

  • I never had any travel restrictions because "anything can happen at any time" and "there are hospitals everywhere". Those are direct quotes from my MFM and OB. They also said "do what you're comfortable with."

Personally, I would have done it. Worst case scenario, you have access to great hospitals and presumably some family close by. I had chosen not to travel to a friend's wedding (moot point bc I had delivered at that point) bc I wasn't comfortable w the hospitals and no family close by. Again, that was my criteria for traveling decision-making.

  • I just went to Miami at 15 weeks. This was the latest I was willing to fly.

    Ella - 10/19/10
    Julia and Aubrey - 4/3/14

  • I did a 12 hour road trip at 24 weeks. Would have flown, but I had way too much luggage. That being said, my dr labeled me her most boring patient ever and said I had a cervix of steel.
    Me: 30, Dx Unexplained/hypothalamic amenorrhea
    DH: 31, normal!
    April/May 2011: Menopur + Ovidrel +TI = BFN
    Oct 2011: Menopur + Hcg +IUI = BFP!
    Beta #1 (13dpiui)= 129.7, Beta #2 (15 dpiui)= 305

  • I flew at 21 weeks and I was fine. It was only an hour and half flight. I felt great the whole trip which was 4 days and we were in Vegas for a business convention. I was ready to go home by the end of the trip. I'm pretty home bound now...I wouldn't feel comfortable traveling now. I'm 25w5d. Just yesterday I traveled in a car an hour and a half away and back and that's the last time I'm doing that! Feet were super swollen when I got home and I was having a few Braxton Hicks too.

  • My MFM told me that even with how strong my cervix looks and how well things are going she wouldn't recommend me traveling after 25 weeks.

  • Thanks for the input/experience ladies. I think I'll hold off buying tickets and just see how I'm feeling/how I'm doing as it gets closer. It'd be a 5 hour flight with a 2 year old (so I worry getting up and walking might be hard). Though I might bring my mom to help.

  • I wouldn't. I went on a family vacation to Europe at 21 weeks with my OB and MFM's blessings. It was terrible. I was so worried the entire time and limited in my physical exertions. I was put in bedrest the morning after we returned because my cervix shortened significantly while on the trip. It just was not worth it.

Luckily after 13 weeks of bedrest (9 in hospital), my twins were born at 36 weeks and completely healthy. We were very fortunate.

  • My BFF was cleared by her MFM to fly at 26 weeks from Chicago to Denver for my wedding (her second baby but first was born at 30weeks). MFM said everything looked perfect and released her permanently. Well, the day after she arrived she started spotting and the morning of my wedding she went into PTL and went to the hospital (that was an emotional day for everything). Obviously, she missed the wedding (she was the only person I had standing up, but that part doesn't matter). After two terrifying days, she was released and flew home. Baby came three weeks later at 29 weeks. She thinks it had nothing to do with traveling but I think otherwise. Btw, both her boys are perfectly healthy now. My MFM said I could fly up to 24 weeks if everything is going well. I am traveling to San Diego at 20/21 weeks for a late Christmas celebration. That will be my last trip.

I flew from Los Angeles to Boston at the end of 22 weeks and came back at 23 weeks. I made sure to pay extra for a direct flight at easy times (as opposed to red eyes or early mornings) so I could sleep well. I drank a ton of water, had an aisle seat and walked to the bathroom a lot, and rested at the airport. I had no problems. If doc says its ok (I went in a few days before for a final check) then do not worry about it. I didn't over do it while on vacation, I tried to keep activities as non physical as possible - eating and hanging out at nice bars with fauxitos.

ETA - I am glad I went, too, it was a perfect getaway for mh and I and I actually relaxed more on that trip than I would have at home.
