Pregnant after 35

Powering past cravings....

Does anyone have any advice for overcoming nasty food cravings? I am hungry all.the.time. and keep wasting money and calories on fast food and other junk. I am okay weightwise, but just feel like it can't be good. But I get completely overwhelmed by a craving and end up junking out! :0 Any good high protein/carb choices that might appeal?

  • I got nothing for you.  I just remember when I was pregnant with my daughter I wanted Pop tarts in the worst way.  I just had to pretend like they didn't exist and didn't give into the craving.  This go round I don't really crave all that much but when I do I either just flat out ignore it or give in and try and use moderation.  Sadly this go round I could care less about food.  I eat because I have to but it seems these days nothing appeals to me at all.  It all just Blah!

  • I feel you. The poptarts have me as well. I jist find myself craving just awful foods-McRibs from McDonald's, Arby's, pizza, Chinese. It's fun but not on my wallet and I just wonder if I'm going to a. Blow up like a blimp or b. Have some type of health problem...I am the same way, sometimes just can't stomach some things either.
  • LOL I guess luckily for me I don't eat fast food at all.  I am not saying that in a holier than thou tone.  It just doesn't appeal to me at all even when not pregnant.  I do love pizza and Chinese food though.  I could have gone for a slice or 2 this evening but had a turkey sandwich at home instead.  Didn't want it at all but didn't want to cook either lol.  Don't get me wrong I eat a ton of crap.  I just bought 2 kinds of cookies at the store today but having to cook for my hubs who has a heart condition so has to watch what he eats keeps me on the straight and narrow (most of the time) Good Luck!!!!

  • I like to eat a small amount of nuts and some sort of fruit for snacks. Hits the craving for sweets and good protein from the nuts.

  • Even when not pregnant, I try to focus on what I'm not eating, as opposed to what I am, if that makes sense. So instead of thinking: I had too many sweets today, I think did I get enough veggies? So I focus on the steamed broccoli, arugula salad, and spinach salad I did have and it encourages me to make healthy plans for my next day or meal.

I'm lazy, so I try to cut myself off at the pass with fast food: pre-prepare meals to avoid temptation, make options healthier like topping pizza with broccoli, or have a healthy snack before my fast food, so I eat less of the meal (goodness, I love fries!).

It's not a perfect system, but it helps me!

  • I know it is not the best thing to eat everyday but when I am craving really bad stuff I get out the peanut butter and at least eat it with some celery or apple slices or whole-wheat crackers.

Nuts in general seem to be a satisfying snack for me -- crunchy and salty, yum! And better than french fries which I would eat morning noon and night if I could.

  • Thanks for all the responses and insights! I am hearing from lots of people that nuts are good, and peanut butter, so I'm going to eat some of those this afternoon when the cravings hit. It's usually the afternoon that hits me, I guess maybe a blood sugar crash, plus fatigue, then I'm like, give me junk! Lol. I have done better today. Glad to know I'm not alone in the struggle! :)
