Cravings that are on the Bad List?

Ugh....I have been sincerely craving salami. I know lunchmeat is a no no, but I so want some right now.

  • You can have it if you warm it up!
  • Loading the player...
  • I know but it's just not the same warm :(   I have felt so unbelievably guilty all day today because I slipped up and had a cold ham sandwich at my mom's. I know it's not the end of the world...but the brain won't let it go.

  • I haven't given up my Subway sandwiches. I don't like many deli meats, so I usually order something with chicken or tuna or bacon instead. But, lots of people would say that's a no-no too because it's prepped with deli meat. Really, listeria is pretty rare, like PPs have said. Go ahead and have a little!

I've been craving sushi. Also on the 'No-No List'!

  • I must be the worlds worst pregnant lady because I eat Subway, just had salami and have had a few slices of cold lunch meat. I've even painted and taken a hot bath.

Seriously though, if you want salami have salami. Like a PP said, the chances of getting listeria are so small that having an occasional peice of salami or lunch meat isn't going to hurt you.

  • There hasn't been much of anything that I've completely avoided.  I'm still weighing the sushi thing - my mw said no raw fish, but I've read a few studies that seem to say it is fine.  I actually had some seared tuna on Saturday, and being from a really nice, well respected restaurant, I felt just fine with that.

Other than that, I've had deli meat, soft cheese, a few sips of DH's beer, hot dogs, soft serve.... I've lost track of all of the crazy things the mysterious and vague "they" say you shouldn't eat.  It's all about evaluating risk, and so far, I haven't been in situations that scream at me to avoid them.

  • I say go for the salami. I have never had food poisoning from my deli.

Things that have given me food poisoning: food court pizza, Subway sandwiches, sushi. No way in hell I'm eating any of those. Even though I do want the sushi... that food poisoning happened almost 10 years ago and my stomach has forgotten but my brain has not.

  • I by no means avoid deli meat but try to eat something different when I can. I always fear that I will do something I shouldn't thinking it will be okay and then against all odds something will happen I will get the, "well didn't you know?!?" Lol.

I'm with you on eating these things from reputable places.  And I have had sushi a couple of times.  With my daughter we had sushi after every appointment :)   Everything I have read says it's fine, so I don't even second myself with it the way I do lunchmeat...

  • I dream of sushi. My first celebratory meal after this is all over will be a ton of nigiri and a bottle of warm sake.
  • All I want is a giant glass of wine and oysters. And a beer. With a side of sushi.

  • Screw the bad list. I crave turkey sandwiches from Subway, and I indulge. Then I stop by Braum's on the way home for some soft-serve frozen yogurt.

  • I've actually read a number of studies (mainly originating in japan) that say the incidence of bad things (technical term) that can happen by eating sushi is far outweighed by the good things that can happen. I've also never had a bad sushi experience before so that may color my opinion. I'm way more afraid of eating dodgy street food than sandwich meat or sushi.
  • I plan on getting a sweet potato roll this week to satisfy my sushi craving. Sushi and a hoagie are at the top of my post-delivery menu.
  • My motto is "everything in moderation". It would be ridiculous for me to follow a long list of things to not eat. If I want lunch meat, I eat it. If I want a hotdog, fine. I'm not going to restrict myself because it just makes the craving worse. Enjoy your lunch meat! :)

  • I asked my German gynecologist about deli meats and she just laughed. She said as long as it's eaten fresh and not kept in a warm climate for too long (which people should be careful of anyway) then it's perfectly safe to eat. As for subway and other restaurants like that- she said they're so carefully controlled for safety and health that there's nothing to worry about. I should just stay away from alcohol, cigarettes, sushi (there's no such thing as fresh fish here- we have no oceans around us, so it has to be cooked), fruit or veg from my own garden (because of the cats that run around everywhere pooping) and soft cheese made with raw milk. If the cheese is pasteurized then it's fine :).

  • Oh! And of course no raw meat lol. She also said to be careful eating liver because of all the vitamin A.

  • Just curious, why is soft serve on the no-no list? I hadn't heard of that one.

I was craving an Italian hoagie in the worst way the other day. I know the risks are low, but I'd rather be safe than sorry so I have stayed away from pretty much everything that they tell you to avoid. There's SO many more food options in the world besides hoagies, sushi, etc. I don't really feel that limited by having to omit a couple of them. *shrug*

Everything is a no-no, depending on who you ask. Which is why it's smart to actually do some research into the real risks.

Doctors give advice in part based on the possibility of being sued, so they are understandably more conservative than need be.

  • This thread is making me want a muffuletta. I'm sure the olive salad kills everything that may be on the meat.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • I totally had seared tuna last week too, which is a no-no for two reasons: higher mercury & uncooked fish.  But it was our anniversary dinner in Maui, and they literally had the name of the person that caught the fish that day on the menu, so I was pretty comfortable with knowing it was fresh fish...it was totally worth it.  Probably best seared tuna I've ever had.  Yum :-)
  • I was trying to be good about all the foods you're "not" supposed to eat.  But I've caved, slightly, and had a few hot dogs and over easy eggs (all of which were DELICIOUS)

  • I found some salami at Marsh that is nitrate-free...I forget the brand, but it's a more conscience-friendly way to cave to the craving. :)
  • I'm pretty sure even thinking about salami gives you listeria. or maybe salami turns your baby into a jersey shore type person. either way, totes srry.
  • I remember there was a lady on my November 2012 board that was hardcore craving lunchmeat. She was being "good" and abstained from it. She had to be admitted to the hospital for a pregnancy complication and what did thehospital bring her for lunch!? A cold cut turkey sandwich!! Everything in moderation :)

  • I had soft serve yesterday (with reese's cups, reese's pieces and kit kats) and it was AMAZING.  I love the yogurt places where you make your own ice cream.  Mmmmmm.

I'm also planning on having a deli meat sandwich for lunch because I'm having weird cravings and I really want liverwurst.  I know, I'm gross.

  • @LoHerrim I think it's the bacteria that can develop inside the machine if it isn't cleaned properly.

The repeated use of the words "no-no" is driving me nuts. I thought that was something a small child would say not a group of adults.

I've been craving sushi too. I've had some California rolls to take the edge off but it's not the same.

    I had no idea.

  • I ate soft serve my entire first pregnancy. I LOVE those make-your-own fro yo places.

Right now I'm desperately craving a glass of champagne. YUM. I would love some. Personally, and flame away, I had a glass of wine or champagne here and there throughout my first pregnancy (dr ok'd it) but I remember it was towards the end. Prob after 20 weeks. I can't wait, ha.

  • Drink a cup of coffee, eat your soft serve and your lunch meat or tuna salad. Treat yourself to sushi and a few sips of wine. No need to walk on egg shells....it will be ok!

  • In the beginning, I was craving raw oysters.

Now, food hates me and I hate food.

  • I had no idea about hot dogs or soft serve! That seems so bizarre. I wonder if this applies to mettwurst and smoke sausage? I also once saw someone say that packaged lettuce was bad?

I'm going to continue about business as usual and just avoid alcohol. I would have a glass of wine here or there but I'm pretty sure at this point even one glass would make me pretty tipsy.

  • Do not worry. I just had cookie dough the other day, I so cant resist when I make cookies!!! I also had a ham sandwich a week ago.

  • Eat what you crave. At first I was scared to eat deli meat as well until I noticed I couldn't stand the smell or the sight of other meats. My next best thing to meats were sandwiches. At first I would heat up the deli meat so that the gems were killed but the more I ate a hot sandwhich, the more I was craving for a cold one. I say give into your cravings once in a while. All this worrying makes us pregnant women a nervous wrecked.
  • Not necessarily bad (as in no no list.. just healthy wise) but all this baby wants is Burger King or McDonald's. eww.. I normally hate fast food but its all I want to eat now!
