winter coats during pregnancy

So I need to buy a new jacket, but I'm kind of torn--I don't really know how right now? How do I know what size should I even get? I'm in MN so I'll be wearing a winter coat up until I give birth. Right now, I'm still barely showing and I'm wearing all of my regular clothes. I have "popped" because I do have a belly, but it's just not very big. I have no idea how to predict how big I will get, and I don't want to drop a lot of money on a coat that I will only use for one winter. This is probably not as complicated as it seems in my mind, haha. What do you all plan to do this winter? Do you have jackets with enough space that it can accommodate your belly or are you planning to buy a new one once you're very big?

Re: winter coats during pregnancy

  • I ordered a maternity coat because I live in MI and my current coats are starting to get tight on my belly already :(. Old Navy has cheap ones and, until Wednesday, Destination Maternity is having a sale on outerwear (this is where I just ordered mine). I figure the most I'll ever wear them is 2 winters, so I don't want to spend too much, but I have to have something for the winter and it's hard to find something that fits well when not pregnant and when super pregnant. Good luck!

  • I'm in MN too and on the high end of plus size so I've kind of given up on a maternity coat. I'm planning on using my regular wool coats with giant infinity scarves this year to keep warm. I imagine I will get too big to drive at some point, so then I'll only be outside when my DH is dropping me off at the door. Not planning on spending lots of time outside this year ;)
  • I'm in IL and planning on borrowing a jacket from my mom, who's just a bit bigger than me. I don't want to invest in a new coat, even though I'll be spending considerable time in it. I'd rather try to borrow something, hit up a thrift store, or make do with what I already have. I see many pregnant women around here leave their jackets open in the winter. I don't know if that really makes sense, but everyone always tells me pregnancy makes them warmer anyway!

  • How about you DH's coat. Not that attractive but might work. I was looking at the ones at motherhood and they had zippers in the sides so they were not overly big to begin with.

  • I'm having the same debate. I have a ski jacket that's a size bigger, but I lost the liner. I'm only 5'2 so H's coats look ridiculous on me so I may throw his liner in my ski jacket. I'm in MA and temps are already in the low 30's to 20s on my commute. I take public transportation so I have to walk to the train, wait for the train, walk to work and repeat on the way home.

  • I bought a coat from target that is a little bit too big! Not obviously, but just enough. If I become to big for it, I just won't button it. I'm not in a very cold state though.
  • I just asked about this on April 13 - here are all kids of responses on this topic from BTDT April mamas.

  • I bought a wool coat with baby #1. I knew I'd get good use out of it since we would like to have at least 4 kids, and we're in MI, so winter coats are worn Oct-Apr. I think if like to get a puffer cost this time around because I know I'll be outside with my 2 little ones quite a bit this winter. I can always sell it once I'm done using it. I wear a size small normally, and my maternity coat is a medium. I was stretching it toward the end of my pregnancies.

  • I live in MN too and I sprung for the matnerity coat. I was able to find one on Motherhood Matnerity's website and get it on sale for $80. I wear business attire to work so it had to be dressy, otherwise I probably would have bought something cheaper for just this winter.
  • My normal coat is a wool button-down and it's kinda roomy, so I'm hoping I'll be able to make it work all winter. If not, I'll pick up something down the road.  I figure that by the time I'm really huge they'll be starting to mark down winter coats anyway, so I may as well wait.
  • With my last pregnancy I was due in January and I just wore one of DH coats the last month and a half or so. I couldn't justify buying a new one for just a couple months. Not the most attractive, but it worked!
  • Ill wear hubby's coats

Thanks guys, I got a lot of great ideas! Unfortunately DH's coat probably wouldn't work--1) He only has 1 coat and he needs it, and 2) DH is 6'2 and 250 lbs. I weigh more than 100 lbs less than him and am only 5'2, so his jacket would go to my knees haha. I might see if I can't borrow one from my mom or just wear my jacket up until the last possible second and then buy one at Goodwill? or just wear it open with warm scarves.

  • I got a normal pea coat with toggles/buttons. I can leave the belly on down unbuttoned.
  • DHs coat or wear mine open. with a scarf. I refuse to pay the money on a maternity coat when I'm not outside much, just to and from the car.

  • I had an April baby 2 years ago.
I live in a cold place so needed to be warm.  I bought a size large bubble coat (normally I get a small, but could easily wear medium).  It was perfect.  I actually wore it the next winter - even though it was a little big.  (I also don't care what I look like when it's that cold out, just want to be warm!)
I also had a normal pea coat that was a little oversized always.  I wore this one when it wasn't that cold out, but by February I could only button the top button.  But didn't feel like spending the extra money.

This time I have those 2 old coats.  But they look old now, so I got an old navy maternity coat for $40 (they always have coupons).  Hopefully I will be all set!

Good luck! It sucks to spend the extra money on clothes you will only use for a little!

  • Thrift store! No reason to waste a ton of money for something temporary. I found an ON maternity puffy vest there last week and am still on the hunt for a coat. For dressy occasions I'm planning on leaving my cocktail and full length coats open and adding a scarf.
  • I got one at motherhood. It has zippers down the sides to expand it!

  • I was full term in December last year, but did not need to size up my winter coat until I was 8 months pregnant.  I had a coat one size up that worked fine.  I do not plan on buying one this time because the coldest weather should be behind me (in PA) by the time I'd need an actual maternity coat.  But, if you are going to have more than one child, a winter maternity coat may be a good investment for you.

  • I had my DD in Dec and could not do up my coat. So I just wore sweaters left my coat undone. I didn't go anywhere too far. Or I'd where one of my husbands coats. I personally wouldn't waste the money. I'm from canada.
  • I have an April 2012 baby and live in a cold area of Canada. I bought a maternity down coat last pregnancy and wore it a ton, I have been wearing this time around for almost a month now ~ we have had snow since the middle of October. For me it was a great investment ~ cost $150 but as a teacher I am out on supervision and out to play at least once a day so a warm coat that fit was a necessity.

  • Same problem...
The weather gets colder and I have a nice pregnancy coat but it`s for Autumn...  I need something big and warm ... I wouldn`t spend money for something I`ll wear this winter only...But I think I have no choice..
