Storage length of frozen BM

How long do you say that frozen BM will stay good in the freezer? The lactation consultant at my pedi's office have me a guideline magnet from Medela and it says 3-4 months in the freezer and 6 months in a deep freezer. However kellymom says 6 months in both the attached freezer and deep freezer. My milk is stored in my regular freezer in the kitchen. I was originally going with 4 months but now kellymom has got me wondering if it's okay for a little longer...?
What do you ladies think?

  • My medela guide says 3-4 months in a freezer and 6-12 months in a deep freeze.

  • I am personally going to go with 6 months and I have an attached freezer
  • I always thought it was 6 months attached freezer and 12 months deep freeze. At least that's what the chart I have on my fridge says!

  • I'm rotating mine out by using some and replacing it with fresh. That's always an option if you're worried. I'm going with the more conservative guideline of 3 months but since I'm back to work now she has to have bottles anyway.

  • I would guess 3-4 months in an attached freezer is for optimal nutritional content but 6 months is still safe for consumption?

  • I think it depends on where and how it's stored in your attached freezer. If it's stored in the back of the attached freezer and it's infrequently opened, then 6 months. If you access the freezer a lot and store near the front, 3-4.

  • I have read up to 12 months in a deep freeze. I've been having to dip into freezer stash a lot more often and I am down to 25 oz from mid July-mid August.

  • I've been told 6 months in an attached freezer and 12 months in a deep freezer. I've hardly used any of my frozen milk since I'm still staying home so I still have milk from May and we bought a deep freezer a few months ago so I could keep it longer. I just hope we can use it all (if not, I'll donate).
  • Thanks everyone for your input. I think I'm going to go with the 6 month mark. I don't open my freezer often (I rarely cook now a days) and they've all stayed fully frozen in the back. I thought I would have used a lot of my bags by now but L only nurses 4 maybe 5 times a day so we it's going slower than I thought it would.
