"My baby"

Does anyone else's MIL call your LO "my baby" as in their baby?!

Mine does this and it annoys the f*ck out of me. I want to scream at her "no, she is MY baby. I gave her life. I carried her. I birthed her. You had yours, this one is MINE." Also, "back off, bitch."

That's all. Vent over.

Re: "My baby"

  • Yes. We have talked about this a ton. There are several of us that have MILs or moms that call the baby their baby. It's pretty damn annoying.

  • Yeah, me too. Even my grandma says "my baby". It bugs my DH even more than it bugs me!

  • This just makes me more grateful mil is on the other side of the globe

  • My favorite was when my SIL came over for dinner, ended up staying the night, and then wouldn't put LO down so I was late for church, had to go by myself, and when I got home she had the audacity to pull him away from my outstretched arms saying "I just got him to sleep. Don't wake my baby up!".

    GAH!

  • Yes. My MIL, FIL, dad and mom all do it. I love it. It's sweet to me. They love my baby. They all know I gave birth to her, but they love her like they love their own kids. I truly don't get why people are annoyed by this.

  • My MIL does this too. My mom did once and I said, "You mean your GRANDbaby?" She got the hint.

  • Man, I had no idea it's happened to so many of us. At least I'm not alone...

And for those who think it's sweet, I totally get it. I even tried to think the same in the beginning but after having her stay at my house 5 of the 6 weekends my baby has been born, I'm so over it.

And I think I've told you about how for the first few weekends, I'd awake to find my MIL standing in my room in the middle of the night just looking down at the PnP?! Weird, uncomfortable and way annoying. So I talked to her about it... but last night, she did it again. When I asked her what she was doing, she responded, "just waiting for MY BABY to wake up." Grr. And of course, the noise startled my LO and she awoke. I fake nursed her (since it had only been an hour since her last feeding) and to prove a point to MIL that this is my baby and to give us privacy so we can sleep!!! Good times.

Ok... That's a little crazy. I would definitely take issue with that..

Both my Mom and MIL have called DD "my baby" and it doesn't bother me at all. I agree with @SweetPeaK26 that they love her like they love their own kids. It's sweet.

Now, when my Mom snatches her from me instead of waiting for me to hand her over... That I have an issue with.

  • It bothers me, but probably for different reasons then others. They were great during pregnancy and MIL was there when I delivered, along with my mom and DH. A little pushy thinking I was doing too much, but it was sweet. Since we got home from the hospital, MIL has seen him once, SIL, never. They live 5 minutes away and I have invited them over many times. You can call him your baby when you come see him!

  • My ma does this. Usually when she is telling me that I am doing something wrong.

  • My mom and MIL both do it. Not at the same time though. That would drive me insane. Lol it doesn't bother me. DH and I waited almost 8 years to have a baby and they're crazy about our little guy.
  • My sister does it. I don't get it she introduces people she knows to LO as her baby, I said something once.... I think she thinks it's cute and I know she isn't trying to be possessive but I side eye her.
