Birth Control

Have you thought about what kind of birth control you're going to use? Are you or your husband going to get fixed? Are you going to try for another? I think this is our
last child, and I've had a terrible experience with the mirena and got pregnant on the pill! I have a lot of thinking to do!

Re: Birth Control

  • I had mirena and loved it. I will probably stick to condoms for a little while then get another one.

  • I got pregnant on the patch with DD. We used the mini-pill after DD. DH is getting fixed after this one.

  • I was using the Nuva ring for 5 years before I stopped when we had a lapse in insurance coverage at the beginning of this year. I loved it! Only had to worry about it once a month. After we got back on insurance we just decided to "see what happens" and I never went back on it. Obviously, I am here, so I had no significant problems getting preggers afterwards. We do not want to have #2 right away so I was thinking about the mirena/iud but I might just stick with what worked for so long...

  • We'll probably just use condoms until we're done having kids. But since this is our first, we'll just keep going and let what happens happen until we're done.

  • I second the NuvaRing! So much easier than pills. I am going to be 35 this month, so if we decide to have another, we probably won't wait too long after baby #1 to get started on the next.

  • I had nuvaring and I loved it, but FYI if you're breastfeeding it's not recommended because it contains estrogen. If you're breastfeeding it's pretty much one of the iuds, the mini pill, depo (which most hcp are against these days), or condoms, I think.

  • This is #2 for us and 3 for DH. So he is getting fixed after this one. DH is also 43 with diabetes so that plays a part in it.

  • I can't use the patch since it isn't recommended for women over 180 lbs. The patch limit is 198 lbs but my doc said some studies show that women over 180 lbs were found to get pregnant on the patch and low estrogen pills despite taking it properly. I wasn't willing to take the risk so I stuck with a full estrogen pill. I had no problem getting pregnant afterwards. I guess i'll go back to the pill afterwards.

I'm a NuvaRing lover!! I used it from April 2007 until July 4, 2013. July 7 was my LMP - didn't take long at all for us. :\">

I'll probably go back on that after BF is done.

  • Last time I could not get pregnant while breastfeeding (tried til my son was 19 months and then got pregnant the month he weened!). So I suggested to DH that we don't need birth control this time as breastfeeding seems to do it for us! The look on his face was priceless, LOL!

We will probably just pull and pray for a while (though I suspect we might not be praying for the same thing as right now I want 3 and he wants 2! Lol!). I'm
not a fan of any percent birth control for now.

  • How long is it suggested you wait after birth to start BC? Are you supposed to start right away or what?
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • Well you're not supposed to have sex for awhile, I think six weeks? It probably depends some on how your birth went and your doctor. Last time they tried to insert the mirena at six weeks (but my uterus hadn't shrunk down far enough yet. Stupid fat uterus), so imagine they would've started me on whatever bc at that point.

  • SO is getting snipped!
  • I'm don't think I am going to go back on the pill. I am thinking natural family planning.

  • I have used the pill in the past which worked really well for me but I'm worried it would get in the breast milk since it's systemic. Does anyone know if that happens? This is not something I have thought about at all!

How does the Nuva ring work? I've considered it but never looked more into it.
It is a small flexible ring that you insert into your vajayjay. It time releases the hormone combination into your body. The nice thing is that you put it in and leave it for 3wks and then take it out for 1 and put in a new one so you don't have to worry about it. I just set my phone calender to remind me when to take it out and put it back in. I never noticed it when it was in there and neither did DH. I thought the whole concept was really strange when my OB suggested it but afterwards loved it!

  • I don't think you have to worry about it getting in your milk, but pills other than the mini pill can really impact your supply. The mini pill is less effective than the regular pill and you have to take it at the same time every day or it gets even less effective.

  • Pull out! But we're open to having more...
  • I should hope so, in that case . . .

  • I have read awesome things about the nuva ring, but I plan on breastfeeding. I refuse depo or IUD. Honestly, we did the pull out method for years and the two cycles we decided to "not pull out," I got pregnant (first one ending in a CP). Not saying that pull out is 100% effective lol but it worked for us. I don't like the idea of messing with my hormones while breastfeeding. BUT I really want to wait a few years before having another one.

So...I just went in a circle. Basically - not sure yet

I know a lot of people are yucked out by the iud. I wasn't interested at first but my midwives really recommended it strongly (apparently it's what they all use!) I used mirena and loved it. I know other women who used para guard and had really good experiences, too. Even if my husband gets a v I will probably get another mirena just to avoid my period!

  • Condoms and NFP. I stay away from all hormones and implants that haven't been around for more than ten years. I have a high risk of cervical cancer bc many women in my family get it. Trying to keep things as natural as possible!

  • i was on yaz for a couple years before we started trying and i HATED how i felt when i was taking it, so I'm done with anything like that! we do natural planning + condoms for good measure (pulling out is what we were doing when we got pregnant with DS... but we were ready so its ok)

we know we are done after this one so DH is getting the big snip sometime next fall! :) Im planning a VBAC, but if i had to have a csection I'm considering getting tied... i still need to ask about that!

  • I was on the pill before DD, and the mini pill after she was born. Coming off the mini pill, my cycle was whack, yo. Like, completely unpredictable and screwy. It never actually normalized... we just lucked out and got KU without knowing when I was ovulating.

After this baby we want another one... maybe two... kids. I think we'll just use family planning and condoms this this time around until we ready to TTC again. I really didn't love being on either pill. But we'll see...

Huh...interesting. I know things don't "get lost in there" but I guess I don't understand how it stays in place. I guess it's something is consider if I couldn't go back on the patch, but for now the patch works for me!

I used the nuvaring for one year. I didn't love it like the others, I think it's all personal preference. It was convenient because I didn't have to remember my pill but it would slip around and once it fell out right after sex when I went to pee! After that I was constantly checking because you don't feel it while its in. Kind of a catch 22.

I'm not going back on anything. Had some not so good luck with bc and rather than put hormones in me, we'll use condoms/natural family planning.
  • I had awful side effects from the pill(s), the nuvaring, and the Mirena, so no hormones for me.

We used the withdrawal method effectively for three years before we started TTC, it requires discipline and commitment. It's not for everyone, absolutely, but used perfectly it has the same failure rate as condoms. I also track my cycles so we could theoretically just avoid my fertile window entirely.

When we're done having kids he'll get a vasectomy, but in the meantime we'll go back to what works for us, keeping in mind that any failure (much like any other bc failure) would not be a big issue since we want more kids.

Actually, I was on the mini-pill cerazette because I can't take anything with estrogen, and it is the one mini pill that doesn't have the strict time restriction. However, if you miss a pill, you don't double up like on the regular pill. You have to wait three days of taking pills again for it to be effective again. But, you have a 12 hour window with cerazette. I didn't get pregnant on it, but, it is slightly less effective. It also stopped my periods, which I loved, but, some people don't like that.

  • Since we worked so hard for this healthy baby, we are not doing any birth control until we have two healthy babies. We won't be TRYING right away but we won't prevent until we have a 2nd healthy baby. Then the discussion of birth control will be a serious one. I don't want to be on the pill forever, I dot want major surgery. Ideally hubs will get snipped but he's currently dismissing that notion. Soooo maybe the shot if it works for me or the iud if the shot reacts adversely.

  • NFP and condoms for the the future, we are open to more kids and don't think that permanent BC is right for our family. I'm not sure what we'll do once we decide we are done having kids since hormones and I don't mix very well and I haven't done enough research about the non hormone IUD"s...at least we have lots of time to figure it out.

  • I'm debating between the pill and Mirena. I loved my Mirena but when I got it removed I saw a sign on my doctors wall about how much it costs to get put in and it was some ridiculous amount like $1500 upfront. I only paid $90 for it years ago when I got it implanted. So I guess when the time comes I'll just have to talk to my doctor and call my insurance and see.

  • @LittleLady77- be careful though- it was medically impossible for me to get pregnant the first time without interventions, but this one was conceived the old fashioned way without drugs. Sometimes one pregnancy can re-set the whole system. (I have a pituitary tumor that threw off my hormones, it is still there, but I guess after having one and BFing my body learned to hormonally compensate.)

  • I am really conflicted. I was on hormonal birth control for 12 years (same pill), loved it, and had no side effects...but I really feel like it jacked up my cycle and contributed to our troubles with fertility before DD was born. In between DD and this LO, we used condoms but we both hate them. I can't use an IUD bc of my bifurcated uterus. And we both feel we're too young to have anything permanent done (although I think DH will have a vasectomy in 5 or 6 years).

I think we'll probably use condoms again while BFing and the I'll suck it up and go back on the pill.
