BOTB Moms- Is your fundal height ahead?

Im really trying to not get worked up, or look into it too much.... But this is my third baby. I've been told that with each baby, your fundal height tends to measure "ahead" because your uterus is already stretched out and used and abused.  My fundal height is 29 weeks- Im 32 weeks. I have an US next Friday with MFM because of my marginally inserted umbilical cord, which, the only risk is slowed growth in the third trimester......

Re: BOTB Moms- Is your fundal height ahead?

  • This is my second.  My baby is measuring big but my fundal is right on average - for now.  Last time I carried too much water so if that happens again I will likely start measuring ahead.  I'll only be concerned when my docotr is.

  • My LO is on the smaller side, and my fundal height is now 3 weeks ahead (the previous appointment it was 2 weeks ahead). I don't remember with my others, except that my boys ended up big.

  • Did you measure ahead with DD2? This is my 2nd pregnancy but the last one was 7 years ago (not sure if that makes a difference) and I was measuring on track last Friday at 30 weeks.

Distract yourself until next Friday! Don't get too worked up until you have a reason to. :(

  • I've been consistently a week ahead (though LO has been consistently a week behind--last u/s was 20 weeks, though).
I was right on track for DD, though I had an "impressive" amount of fluid when she was born. She was 8lb 2oz, which I think is pretty average.

  • I wouldn't worry too much about it mama!  What did you measure with your other kiddos?  I'm a freak of nature, but each kid/pregnancy has been a little different...

    #1- 4 weeks ahead
    #2- 6 weeks ahead
    #3- 5 weeks ahead
#4- 3 weeks ahead (so far)

#1 was my biggest baby (although all of my kids have been big) so I try not to read too much into the fundal height thing!

  • I have a question not related specifically to your post, other than it's something in the title. I was confused about the BOTB. Did you mean BTDT possibly? Or does BOTB stand for something other than "babies on the brain" that I"m not aware of? I've seen BOTB used a few times here, and I keep meaning to ask that.
  • My fundal height measures 2 weeks ahead for some reason. Same with DS. And he was 6-13 at 39 weeks. I think you have to take it with a grain of salt. I have a long torso and tall babies.

Interesting. Never seen that one around here before, other than a couple of times on this particular BMB. There's actually specifically a BOTB board on TB that stands for babies on the brain, so that is always the association that I make.

ETA: Wait a minute....wouldn't "been around the block" be BATB, @wilburbud? ;)
  • @peanutmuse I was wondering the exact same thing!

  • I measured ahead with my son and I was just at my appointment this morning and was measuring small (27 at 28 weeks). My dr didn't seem concerned at all. She told me that she could order me an ultrasound but she had no concerns. I was measuring ahead at my last appointment. I thought I would be ahead as well. I find it weird.

I assumed it was Been Over This Before...

  • My OB never really mentions it. Just that measurements look great. So I assume, it's average. I know with DS, they sent me in for an ultrasound and then a follow up because they thought he was measuring small and was concerned he wasn't growing properly. Well he ended up being 8lb 4oz. Luckily she wasn't the OB on call when I went into labour!

Either way, if it's 2+ mom's then sorry I didn't know the definition because I have not popped out enough kids to qualify! I'm only on my 2nd fundal height journey over here!

  • I did not measure ahead or behind with DD, but am with this one. Were your older two on the smaller side at birth? I wouldn't worry too much about it. Measuring is all about averages. To get an average, some will be bigger and some will be smaller. As long as you maintain a similar growth trajectory, you should be fine.

  • I had a growth ultrasound abut two weeks ago (30 w) and her head is measuring a bit small, and my fundal height was only 28 weeks. My dr. Said he wasn't concerned (yet) because its still in the range. Try not to worry too much.
  • I  think it's normal/not a big deal to measure 2 weeks ahead or behind. I'm on #4, baby measured in the 99 percentile at our A/S at 19 weeks. My fundal height has measured 1 week ahead consistently since then. My fluid levels are normal. Dr. or nurse have not said anything and do not seem to be concerned.
  • My OB doesn't even measure fundal height.  Says it's not accurate.  I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you but I wouldn't be too concerned.

FWIW, I just had a growth ultrasound due to my GD and LO was measuring 75%.  OB said even that can be 20% off with the best equipment.  So, nothing is perfect.

  • @nbbride06- Mine hasn't so far either! This is a new OB for me this pregnancy so I wasn't sure if someone had just dropped the ball or if they just don't do it! I was gonna ask at my next appointment but it's good to know that some just don't do it!

  • My fundal height is 3 weeks ahead. Not sure if baby is measuring ahead; I haven't had an u/s since 20 weeks. I measured ahead with my last pregnancy as well, and DD was just over 7 lb at 39w1d.

Almost this exactly. I measured ahead with DS and had a 7# 15oz baby at 39 w. I'm measuring 3 weeks ahead this time and I had a growth scan at 28 weeks that showed LO to be in the 50% and totally average. I have another scan on Thursday so we will see if there are any changes, but I would try not to worry about fundal measurements. It seems that are only a couple of steps up from throwing a dart at a board and seeing where it lands...
