Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Will my BM supply get better with time??

So, this is sort of a f/u to the post from earlier when people were talking about how much they get from the breasts when pumping.

Right now I just switched from pumping after nearly every feeding, to pumping only 3 times or so a day (because DD finally hit birthweight and I can just give her the other boob instead of supplementing with BM).

When I pump I only get about 2-3 ounces total. 3 is really good and pretty rare.

Will my supply increase with time? Or do I need to be trying to increase it? I started taking Fenugreek, but thats the extent of my additional effort.

Suggestions? TIA!

  • The thing that works the ?best is to nurse, nurse, nurse. The baby is the best at stimulating milk production. She can get more out than the pump can. Check out kellymom.com too. That site is the best.

  • I'm with you on this one...I don't know what to do.  Last week I finally started producing enough to keep him satisfied during the day, but with nothing left to pump at all.  I was just glad to keep him going without supplementing!  But then this week he has been nursing every waking moment and there is nothing left at all.  None, nothing, and he's getting really angry about it.  I've tried everything to increase supply, but its not working.  When I pump first thing in the morning an hour or two after his feeding (the only time I get anything from the pump at all) I get at MOST 2 oz.  Usually more like 1 1/2.  I don't know what to do either.  I have been nursing around the clock.  Today for example, I have had him attached to me since 4 this morning with maybe an hour and a half total time away from me.  Finally I couldn't take his crying while nursing anymore because there was nothing left and gave him 2 oz. of formula.  He's happy now sleeping finally.  Frequent nursing is doing NOTHING to increase my supply.  I'm drinking water, etc, etc, etc.

  • I could only get 1-2 ounces between feedings when I first started pumping.  Over time, it's increased as I've gotten used to the pump.  I occasionally give him formula and pump during that feeding and get 6-7 ounces, but when I pump between feedings it's usually only 3-4.

Unless you have an oversupply, your body is not going to produce a ton more than DC needs.  I just pumped and stored what I could, and gradually it has added up.

I'll never be one of the 10oz-ers, though.

  • i've been pumping for 2 months and it hasn't gotten better, sorry to say.  it hasn't gotten too much worse, but just know some days are better than others.  drink lots of water, remember to eat throughout the day and try to relax when pumping.
  • Damn... so this might just be the way my milk is going to stay? I should get enough of an increase to keep up with her needs though, right? Because she will soon be eating more than 2-3 oz per feeding. =/

  • yes if you are letting her go to breast often and drining water etc you should be keeping up with her but may not have an oversupply to store.
