3rd Trimester

STM ...membranes stripped?

Anyone every have their ob strip their membranes without telling you? I had an appt today and she was in there for quite a while and it was Very painful...not like any other I have had with ds...with him it was a quick check, you are x number of cm dilated and that was that ...this time it was different and when I read about it, im pretty sure that's what she did..

Re: STM ...membranes stripped?

  • I'd ask her. They should tell you if they are going to do anything like that. *ask you rather! I have no experience with it being a ftm and lo is here already but I would be very angry had my ob attempted anything like that and personally I would have refused it if she wanted to. That's just me though...:)

  • They should ask. My OB asked & the experience was like an aggressive cervix check. Your doc should not sweep your membranes without telling you. That is messed up unprofessional.

  • Getting checked is VERY painful. I'm sure that is all your OB did. If they stripped your membranes they would be trying to put you in labor and you would know.  This is why I don't get checked until 40 weeks; it hurts like hell and makes you bleed.

I would call to confirm, but sounds like they just did the check.
  • If you aren't very dilated it can be very painful to get checked.  It's also possible that your OB was stretching you a bit to see how dilated you really are - I was 3.5cm at 38 weeks with DS2, and my OB was stretching me a bit because if I went to 4cm he'd have sent me straight to L&D.  That hurt!

  • Thanks ladies! I would think she would tell me...I was 3 cm 50% effaced and I lost my mucus plug the next day...but feeling fine
  • I THOUGHT my ob might have done this for me at my 38w appt with DS. She had said she was going to check me a little more thoroughly that time since I was so uncomfortable. It was like a deeper, more intense check than she had done before.

My appt was on a Wed. I had some cramping the next day, but read that can be normal after having a cervix check for about 24 hours afterwards. Friday I started early labor contractions, like very strong braxton hicks - not painful, but uncomfortable as hell. Come that night they became more & more intense & painful. I did end up going to the hospital & DS was born Saturday evening.

So.. I thought it was possible this is what she did, but knowing her, I wouldn't think she would just DO it. When I first thought about it, I was like.. hey - shouldn't I be mad about this if she did? But I have no way of proving that was what happened.  So, I hold no remorse, regret or anything if she did do it because it is over & done with & DS was a healthy guy. I will be sure to mention I'd like to go to my due date at least this time. Just in case.

This isn't the case for everyone. Mine don't hurt at all and I'm only a cm dilated at -2 station. I haven't bled once either.
