at what point did you take leave from work?

Re: at what point did you take leave from work?

  • My Due date was Mon the 11th and I worked until Fri the 8th.  I could only get 6 week ml (8 with a section) I wanted as much time at home as possible.  If i worked until the 8th I could use 10 sick days to bring me to Easter Break which gave me an additional 2 weeks off.  I received full pay for the 10 sick days and 2 weeks for the break.  By working until the end I was able to get a full 10weeks off.  It was difficult working that late into the pregnancy but well worth it in the end.

  • With my first I got to the point of misery around 39 weeks and decide to call it quits thinking I'd have a week to relax but my water broke the next day! I'm currently 37.5 days and decided to start my leave on Monday at 38 weeks. It's so much harder being pregnant, working FT, and having a two year old. I'm at the point where I can barely walk by the end of the day and so stressed because I feel very unorganized. I'm hoping that this one arrives by 39 weeks too like her sister so that I do not lose too much pre-baby time.

  • With DS, I took one day off before my c-section.  It was scheduled on a Tuesday and I had everything wrapped up on Friday.  With DD, I took four days off before to take care of last minute errands and arrangements.

  • For DD1, I worked until I went into labor, the day after my due date.

For DD2, I choose my last day, 2 days prior to my due date. This made it easier to wrap up projects, set my out of office notices, etc.

I think a lot depends on the nature of your work and how your pregnancy goes.

  • My employer's policy is that you can take 2 weeks before the due date to "get ready".  This is generous and I think that unless you are horribly uncomfortable (I wasn't) then you'll just be bored.  I planned on working up to I delivered.  I blocked my calendar to prevent people from setting meetings for one week prior to my due date.  But my water broke two weeks early so that even left me in a bit of a lurch as I did have meetings scheduled for that week.

The midwives who worked under my OB were pretty clear that unless there was a medical reason they encouraged us to plan to work up until our due date.

  • I worked up until my due date with the first.  Took the last week off with my second, but just to burn through some vacation days as I would have lost them at the end of the year (before ML was over - DD was born 12/14).

  • I left 2 weeks before my EDD. I just couldn't continue. My job is physical and my body shut down.

  • I worked until delivery both times. That meant working past 40 weeks when DS1 was "overdue." With DS2 I had a RCS on a Monday and worked right up through the Friday before.

I wanted to use every bit of my ML to hold a baby!
  • Because of timing with DS being due near the end of the year, I had PTO to use or lose so I ended up taking a week of PTO prior to actually going into labor. This time around, I'm working till the bitter end. I don't want to cut into my total allowed FMLA leave without actually having a baby!

  • I worked until the day I delivered both kids. 41w4d with DD1 and 40w2d with DD2
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
