I have a question...reading the post made me a bit worried. I am one of those people that will only shower with hot water. My question is why is hot water bad when you are pregnant?
I use hot water, and still take baths. You need to be weary of raising your core body temperature. So submerging yourself in a 103-105 degree jacuzzi or bath can do that (think about how you get flushed and light headed after 15 min in a jacuzzi). That's what you're avoiding. It's hard to do that in a shower.
check the labels, you will be surprised that even most bries etc are actually pasturized esp in the US! (in europe it's another story). also, the whole lunch meat thing is so funny to me because in germany that's actually one of the recommended foods for pregnant ladies! not salami and prosciutto of course but "cooked" lunch meats like ham and turkey. Lol.
No smoking. No alcohol in the first tri. No sodas. No coffee in the first tri ( not a big coffee drinker anyway). Limit my green tea. No hot tubs. No deli meat or raw fish/meat. No retinol skin products.
I just googled this scallop/shark thing and it looks like maybe some cheap restaurants will try to serve pieces of shark and call it scallops (I guess much like these places would sub monkfish for real lobster). I've never heard of that before but in general real scallops are fine. Shark can be bad because of the bioaccumulative effect (big fish eats slightly smaller fish, who ate smaller fish, who ate smaller fish) and the mercury builds up so I just stay away from big fish. And I have scallops maybe twice a year so even if it was shark by some chance I don't think it would be that big of a deal. I'm staying away from farm-raised salmon (usually do that anyway) and most fish from China.
I've never smoked but I'm staying away from family members who smoke in the house right now (which is really hard since they don't know yet!). Avoiding alcohol but I might have a few sips of wine later in the pregnancy. Decaf coffee, limited soda (never drank much anyway), no sushi, no uncooked eggs (basically I just can't bake cookies or brownies because I WILL eat the dough) and I've been reading labels a little more looking for egg yolks in dressing/dip/etc.
Definitely no alcohol for me and I don't smoke, eat sushi, or color my hair, so those are easy ones. I gave up my daily caffeine for 1st tri, but I'll get a little more lenient on that as time passes. I only take OTC meds that are on the approved list that my old OB gave me and only if I absolutely need to (stupid allergies).
I stopped using my face wash that contains salicylic acid.... we'll she what kind of acne backlash I get for that.
I have no choice but to deal with the cat litter. I know that my cat is parasite free, so I just wash my hands well. I WISH I could give that chore up .

I didn't think I was losing my mind on that one. I did think it was more common than it apparently is so it's good to know that it's not.
i didnt change anything when i got preg with my first one. i got my nails done, my hair, ate everything (but sushi) until i got gest diabetes, then i had to be on a diet. people even told me i should have gone on a hayride! people will tell you alotof things you cant do, if you are unsure ask your dr. have a happy 9m!
I was just looking at my lifestyle.... And apparently I don't really indulge in many pregnancy risky behaviours! My doctors rule of thumb for the bath during pregnancy is- if it's turning your skin red, too hot. I haven't had a drink since August (not that I'm an alcoholic, the last time I had the night off to indulge in liquor was a camping trip in August. Indulge I did. I have a vague memory of screaming out the words to "Santeria" after forcing my drunken niece to hike a mountain with me). I quit smoking with DS. I don't take medication. I hate sushi. Hate deli meat and pasteurized cheese...... It will suck to give up raw cookie dough, especially with all the Christmas baking coming up!
I'm so glad I was lurking today, because I got to read this. /ded

The one and only thing I avoid is alcohol. I had a hot dog the other day, also a sandwich made with cold lunch meat followed by a diet coke and soft serve ice cream. Deoderant is a must especially living in south Louisiana. I'll eat crawfish, sushi and anything else filled with iodine and mercury. I did the same thing with DS1 and he is perfectly healthy and smart!!

Here's the answer:
Here are some examples of food scams that have been uncovered:
• Expensive “sheep’s milk cheese”? Not really. It was made with cow’s milk, a food allergen that could make some consumers seriously ill.
• “Sturgeon caviar?” Nope. It was Mississippi paddlefish. But the consumer who pays top dollar for an exotic luxury item should get exactly that.
• “Scallops?” Maybe not. Cookie cutters have been used to turn shark meat or skate into scallop look-alikes.
• “Wild” salmon? Most of what’s sold as “wild” salmon is actually farm-raised.
• “Olive oil?” Often, it was wholly or mostly another oil that was cheaper to produce. This scam deprived misled consumers of the heart health benefits and taste they seek by cooking with real olive oil. (Read more about the international olive oil scam by clicking on the New Yorker link listed below.)
• “100% pure honey”? The price was high enough for top quality, but the product was diluted with sugar beets or corn syrup.
• “Pure maple syrup?” Not exactly. It was diluted with water and sugar.
certainly there are many consumer scandals, but I think it's no reason to make ourselves crazy.
I didn't read all of the answers so maybe this was already answered. @Cheekers2010 you said that you are avoiding pepperoni, why?
I am not drinking, smoking, or being in close proximity to everyone around me that smokes. I'm also not doing the litter even though I'm pretty sure it is only if your cats go outside that there is a risk but we won't tell DH that! No ibuprofen & I had already stopped my prescription meds when I knew we were going to TTC months ago. I won't eat RAW sushi, there is a difference. I don't know about the deli meat. We'll see. No hot tubs. No smoked salmon, I'm happy that I got to eat right before I got pregnant so I'm not craving it. Limiting myself to one can of pop with caffeine in it a day.
Love this thread! I went to my parents last night for steak. I asked for mine cooked well done and my mom looked at me like I was ill! (I usually love my steak medium-rare) I explained that I had read about eating thoroughly cooked meat when you're pregnant and she couldn't believe it! She was saying how ridiculous all of these "don'ts" were and that when she was pregnant (before they came up with said "dont" list) she stayed away from alcohol and that was it! Two healthy pregnancies! Obviously we are more educated now, and I will be avoiding certain things, but deodorant!?!? Come on!!!!!
I avoid wine 1st Trimester - will probably have (need) a glass later especially in June!! This is my give away to my family -- once they see me not order wine or beer their first question is "are you pregnant?" I also avoid lunch meats (got so sick on the look and smell of it with my first - I really haven't been right since so this one is easy). Avoid hair dyes, pedicures, hot dogs, and my caffeine. I drank maybe two cups of coffee a day plus one or two fountain pops a day. I order well done meat - instead if my normal med rare . I don't smoke and don't eat Sushi ... But i will continue to eat some seafood -- shrimp especially!!
Also read that you're not supposed to eat shark and I ate scallops the day I found out and most scallops are made of shark.
Scallops are made of scallops. It's a type of mollusk.
I will wear deodorant. I will not drink too much caffeine. I don't like lunch meat anyways. Unpasteurized cheeses are rather hard to come by these days.
Sephora has a good deodorant that isn't antiperspirant. I haven't used anything with antiperspirant in a few years. There are more options for deodorants without antiperspirants in men's deos. Also there are plenty of safe nail polishes without toluene and you can find natural hair dyes without ammonia in them!

I was just thinking about this. I doubt most of our moms had rules like this. Think about our grandparents!! I feel bad for my dd. Maybe they'll have personal bubbles by then.
