Natural Birth

BCBS of Massachusetts

So, we live in VA but our insurance is through Massachusetts. The policy states home births are not covered unless basically it's an accident... I'm beginning the process of pre-approval/appealing. Anyone have experience with this particular insurance? I've read success stories on home births getting approved even when specifically banned like this. My biggest thing is that my deductible is $1500. So I'm only asking them to cover $1400. My delivery with DD was over $20000 & that did not include my prenatal & weekly NSTs.

Re: BCBS of Massachusetts

  • If you have a CNM attending, might they be able to bill it as out of network specialist care?

I have BX Mass but am not planning a homebirth. They will cover the freestanding birth center that's across the street from a large hospital and children's hospital (but not affiliated). I've had only good luck with them so far though so I'd say it wouldn't hurt to try.

ETA I would imagine that although it will only cost $1400 more if everything goes well, they have to take into consideration the fact that CDC stats say homebirths don't have as many good outcomes, and what it could cost them in the long run if something went wrong. Just a thought.

  • Unfortunately the only birth center just closed this year :( due to laws in VA basically keeping them from accepting insurances! The CDCs stats are outdated & biased. In my appeal I will be including plenty of articles showing that home birth is just as safe as hospital births when attended by trained professionals ( a CNM in this case).

  • What? I live in Northern Virginia, and there are something like three free standing birth centers in my county! BCBS Carefirst will even cover some of them as in-network. What region in Virginia are you from?

Good for you. It sounds like you're preparing your appeal in a way that will give you the best possible chance of them making an exception. Best of luck!

  • @MSVarner I'm in Richmond. We had an awesome birthing center. It still functions for well woman care but not as a birth option. They closed in April. My last birth was only 4 hours so going up to NoVA isn't comfortable for me lol.

  • @sthomas - Yikes. Well, my advice then is to call around to midwives in the area. They have likely billed many different insurance companies, and might be able to give you a rough idea of how much was covered for other women with the same insurance. :-(

  • I'm not of any help, but I think its funny that you have BCBS of MA and live in VA and I live in MA and have Carefirst BCBS (MD & VA).
  • @amt0312 ain't that funny! ;)
