  • we're 25 miles outside of the city with an hour commute on a normal day and you can't get much for $200k. Maybe a run down house or a small condo.

  • In my neighborhood?  Nothing.

If you go outside of the city you could probably get a townhouse, but it would probably be a fixer upper.

A 30 year old, 3bdrm, somewhat updated, 900 sq ft apartment style condo with $250 condo fees.
A 30 year old, 3bdrm, more updated, 1060 sq ft apartment style condo with $300 condo fees.
6 year old, 600 sq ft 1 bdrm apartment style condo with ? condo fees. New neighbourhood, close to lots of amenities, but far from downtown.
Nothing but apartment style condos on the east side of town.

  • I think $300,000 is the entry point for a house in a top school district where I live -- and even then, you're probably looking at a fixer-upper.

If you're willing to compromise on schools, you could get a small-ish fixer for $200k or a new-ish townhome. If you're willing to compromise on schools AND commute, you can get a new or updated 2,000+ sq ft home on a nice-sized plot of land.

  • In my small town/suburb you can get a slightly older (20-40 years) home approximately 1500-2000 square feet on a decent lot or a new semi the same size on a small lot.

Our house was listed at 200k 4 years ago but the market has come up a little since then.  It is 3 +1 bedroom, 1.5 bath, on about a 1/4 acre lot with an in ground pool in a very nice (not ritzy, but ritzy adjacent) neighbourhood.  It needed a lot of cosmetic updating and a few major things as well.

  • We live in a LCOL area and not many of the homes are over $200,000 so that will get you a decent home probably up to 2500 sq ft and 4 bedroom.

Our home we bought was 107,000 and it was in town, newly remodeled, 2 bad, 1 ba 900sq ft

I wouldn't call that high. To get a house for $200K in my city you'd be looking at a 50-60 year old, 600-800 sq ft house in a bad neighbourhood.

Same, and the 2br would not be anything great, that's for sure.

ETA: for perspective, we just listed our 2br + den condo last week, and it's more than 2x that. But, we are moving to the suburbs, and getting a 2200 SFH for the same amount.
  • In our neighborhood, nothing right now. Down the street an 800sqft 2 bed 1 bath place is in escrow for 600k. And down the hill we had a couple 600sqft places go for 450k. And those are the smallest homes around. I guess for 200k you could have a down payment on a mid sized home.
  • Our house was 195K. It's a 30 year old two story, single family home with 4 BR, 2.5 bath, and a decent yard. Hate the weather but love the low COL of Iowa.

  • 2-3 bedroom, 1 bath, 1200 sq ft Georgian on 1/10 acre, perfectly livable but needs paint, updated kitchens and baths, tiny galley kitchen, unfinished basement, old dying garage. There are two of those and they're the top choices at the 200,000 range.

  • We rent because it's very hard to buy in this area and we dont have a large enough downpayment saved yet....Right now we're in a small 2 bedroom in a crappy downtown neighborhood and rent is $1200 per month (which sadly is considered a good price).... but sometimes I day dream and browse real estate sites...

We'd like a single family home with 3 bedrooms and 1.5+ baths ideally if we were to buy (or hell, even a townhome would be acceptable as long as it has what we need).... you wont find one in the moderate (not even the best) neighborhood we'd be content living in for under ~370K right now.  Most are more than that, that's the minimum I've been seeing.

Townhomes, maybe ~300K or a little over

If there even ARE any that is, since inventory is kind of low.

So yeah.  Renting for awhile it is while I slowly accumulate a gigantic downpayment.

    I hate this place.

What is the average household income where you live? See, this makes me totally jealous. A house like that here would be $1m to build. So sometimes I have these fantasies of moving to Georgia or Mississippi and buying a mansion. But then I remind myself that the salaries probably suck. ETA: in the 2011 census the median household income in my city was about $85,000.

I paid over $200K for a 2 bed/2bath/2 parking spot, 850 sq ft condo in a 4 unit building in a transitional neighborhood.

I pay around $3800 in RE Taxes per year (so our building is probably around $15,000/year).

In one of the nicer neighborhoods 200K, that would get you a studio/jr. one bed or MAYBE a one bed place with no parking or $20-50K additional for a parking spot.

  • PIP or link, y'all!  I love looking at real estate!

    4 bedrooms, 3 baths, 2200 sqft.

Dated interior but deeded ICWW access.

Thanks So. California... And Obama. I am guessing you aren't in LA.  I looked and found zero, zilch for my zip code.

I'm near LA, I'm in North OC.... So in my area, there's probably nothing if I were to put 200K Max in the search... but I said maybe
just incase maybe someone somewhere is selling a demolished studio shack lol

I didnt do a search, I dont like depressing myself :P

  • In my area, you can get a small/older condo for under 200K, maybe an older townhouse.  You'd be hard pressed to find a decent single family home in a decent neighborhood in my area for 200K or less without it needing tons of work.  I'm in MD not too far outside of DC.

we pay $2,000 per month renting a 2 bedroom condo.  Yay, California!

Ugh I'm sorry! :( I want to go back to Tucson AZ where I grew up and I could get a bigger place for half of what I pay.  Sigh.

Do you at least have decent squre footage??? $2000 for a 2 bedroom holy crap...Is it at least a nicer neighborhood?

  • what are property taxes like where you live?  my town has low taxes and we pay $3k a year.  in a city not too far away, you can buy a huge, beautiful home for under $200k, but you will be paying 11K a year in property taxes.
