Trying to Get Pregnant

How do you count what "cycle number" you're on?

What I'm wondering is...say you have a cycle where you don't have sex in your fertile window...would you count this toward the number of cycles you've been TTC?

Specifically for me, we started TTC while I was still breastfeeding.  The first cycle we actually tried, my luteal phase was only 8 days.  Counting that cycle, we're on cycle #4 TTC.  In my head I've been thinking, "well, there really wasn't a chance that first time since my LP was so short, so we're really only on cycle# 3."

I know it's not really a huge deal, but just wondering what others do?  If for some reason one cycle was a bust, do you still count it in your TTC cycle total?

(I'm not asking for purposes of determining if you should go to an RE, just for your own personal "tally".)

  • I would count the cycle with the short LP.  You were TTC, so it should count.

  • I went off BCP in July 2012 but my first post-BCP AF wasn't until December 2012. I count back to July for my RE (July-Dec is a long time to go with no AF, so there are other issues at play here), but I only count back to December for check ins here.
  • Thanks!  Like I said, it's not a huge deal, but I was just wondering what other's thoughts were on it.

  • I count the months we have had decent enough timing that it could have resulted in a pregnancy.

I did this too, but at this point I just go with whatever fertility friend says.

I know that I have had a few months on BCP to prep for IVF cycles, so we weren't really "TTC" those cycles, but I don't take the time to figure out what the actual number is anymore.  I think fertility friend says 28 cycles, but it's probably more like 25.

  • I don't really count cycles TTC anymore (yeah, it gets depressing after over a year with short cycles), but when I was still counting I included cycles with poor to horrible timing in the count.

    I agree.
  • I actually just got really annoyed with my one friend earlier this week about this topic.  I said we've been trying for 3 months and she said 1 because I can't count the 2 after BC.  But we were trying, I count it! We could have gotten lucky!  I just let it go and ranted about it in the 2WW...

  • I would count it.  I count every cycle where we are hoping or actively ttc.

Example: We were ttc and got our BFP on cycle #2.  We had a loss and now have to wait two cycles before we can ttc again.  I won't count those two cycles of waiting, so when we begin ttc again I will consider on use our 3rd cycle ttc #1.

  • I would count it. I counted my last cycle where I was coming off a m/c and technically supposed to be TTA. Because it's part of trying, to get past that first cycle after m/c to TTC the next. I dunno.

  • If I only counted cycles where I actually had a good shot at getting pg, it'd be practically zero!

  • I've gone back and forth about this a couple of times because the first 2 cycles I know we had horrible timing since I thought I ovulated on CD14 (thank goodness I found this board). But ultimately, I decided to officially count them. This month, if I end up TTA, I won't count it.
