My "leave" (which will be unpaid) will only be 8 weeks. I'm already stressing about it

BUT if all goes as planned, my in-laws may be moving here and my mother-in-law would be watching baby. Which I would feel sooooo much better about than leaving our 8 week old baby at daycare.

I don't work. But I do go to school and I will not be returning to school after baby is born.

Ooh, this is tough. I'm planning on going back to work, but preliminary checks on daycares in our area makes it look like 90% of my part time salary would be going to daycare, which isn't ideal. We have a lot to figure out before this baby gets here!

I went back to work when DS was 14 weeks for 6 months before deciding to be a SAHM. So I'll continue staying home indefinitely once this boy arrives.

Ideally I'd like to stay home with baby until he/she is ready for preschool but I know we can't afford that so hopefully I'm able to take 3 months off. I will be reducing my work days from 5 to 4 though.

I returned to work after DS was 6 weeks and plan on doing the same with this baby. I've already talked to DS's provider and she is keeping a spot for lo. We've been really blessed with great child care!

I currently have 4 part time jobs. When I go back it will be just to pick up night and weekend shifts. I plan to not worry about work until 6 months at least.

I am hoping to get a teaching job starting next fall and work until I pay off my student loans BUT DH has been hinting that we might just try to make it work with me at home! I would love to stay home at least a year or so even though I really want to teach! Our financial status will have the opportunity to greatly improve starting next (2015) January since DH will be able to get his PE and his job is already talking about putting him at project manager even though he isn't a PE yet! I am so proud of him!

I work for my dad at a restaurant. I do a lot of the work behind the scene so I have no clue how this is going to work. We will see how guilty I feel.

I am lucky enough to get 14 weeks full paid parental leave!!! but have to go back after that, DH will be SAHD! or is that SAHF??? hehe

I'll be a full time student. I'm hoping to take the majority of classes online or at night the first year to avoid child care.

I know going back to work is a personal choice, and in an ideal world we'd all get 1 year of paid leave, but but just wondering if anyone who is not planning on going back is worried about the long term impact on your career/earning power? Nannies and daycare are expensive, but in the long term probably cheaper than having a year or more of a gap in your working history.. it's hard enough to find a job even when employed...

Not returning to work, if I can help it. I may take some other part-time work, but not at my current place of employment. If at all possible, I'll just stay home and take care of the little one.

We are blessed to have family who will watch the baby for free if I do have to work at all. I know that is a rarity.

My EDD is 4/22/14 which is ideal for a teacher. I'll work until spring break and then come back to start the new school year. That's my choice as I can't imagine someone else trying to open my kindergarten class for me.

I took a year off and it didn't hurt my career. If I had taken 5 it might have been different but just the one didn't do any damage.

As someone who hires for a living it's really the longer your gap the harder time you will have. I wouldn't trade staying home for anything though so happy to have had that experience!

We're currently planning on homeschooling. So yes, if I chose to go back to teaching after that it would be a long gap, but homeschooling is also directly applicable to my field. I would also go for a masters to "refresh" myself if that was necessary.

However, right now I don't feel like I ever want to go back to teaching, I'm that burnt out. My side job is something I will continue doing on a volunteer basis after baby and if I need/want I may try to turn that into a career later on.

I will be home for about 4 months. I wish I could stay at home but it would be really hard financially and not worth it to me. I have a 10 month position so at least I get a few months home in the summer and with my DS I had 6 months off. I did not get bored or miss work at all! I loved every minute of being home and being able to be with my DS, get housework done, go for long walks and to the play ground. I loved having dinner all ready when DH got home so then we could have fun family time until DS went to bed....If only money grew on trees!

In our country the paid leave is for 2 years, so I`m not going to work the first 2 years for sure. After that, I think I`ll find a daycare and search for a job.

I'm returning, but I live in Canada so I'll get a year of maternity leave at 50% of my salary. It's hard to go back after such a long time and I went back to my job (not a new one), but you get back in the groove of things fairly fast.
