Pumping pain advice

Ok ladies who have been pumping for a while, I need advice.

I've pumped randomly the last 10 weeks to get LO used to the bottle but never more than 1x per day and usually only 3-4 times per week.
Today is day 3 of pumping during daycare hours (3x per day) and my nips are starting to hurt! Wtf...they toughened up weeks ago, I thought I was past this!
I don't think it's a shield sizing issue. It doesn't hurt while pumping and they seem to fit according to info I found on medela's site.
Did you have pain when you first started pumping more? Were your nips already tough and then you had a pain/adjustment period to the pump?
It's more like pain from strong suction...not that super tender nursing pain from starting breast feeding.

Re: Pumping pain advice

  • Do you have the pump turned up too high? That's when I would experience the most pain.

  • Ditto, you might have the suction up too high, or you're pumping too long. How long do you pump each time?

  • I have the same problem sometimes. I agree your setting may be too high. Also, my LC recommended putting coconut oil inside the suction things (sorry I don't know pump terms). Then they're being lubricated when you're pumping. I assume you could also use lanolin if that works better for you.

  • You probably have the pump suction up too high or your just adjusting to the increased frequency in pumping. I have used hydrogel pads when I have experienced nipple pain and it worked wonders.

  • I do have it turned all the way up. I read to turn it up as high as it was comfortable. It's not painful during pumping...it's after.
It guess it makes sense the high suction is causing the pain later on. I'll try to turn it down...I worry I won't get as much milk then.
  • Your nips may have to get used to this new sort of suction but I do agree that perhaps it's just too high for you.  Try pumping for a day at a lower setting and see if the pain continues.

14 weeks later my nips still have moments where they get too sensitive so I use lanolin and it helps.

  • My LC told me to turn it up high enough so that your nipples are being pulled, but not too high.  It doesn't need to be super high, just enough so that your nipples are being pulled, and that way your milk will come out.  Play around with the settings and see how low you can have the suction and still have milk come out.

I'm late on this, but I have been pumping 5-6 times per day for the past 2 months or so (weight gain issues), and I read somewhere that having the suction too high can actually result in getting less milk than using the optimal (comfortable) suction for you, so I would decrease the suction and see if it helps. I pump on the lowest setting and haven't had an issue. GL!

  • Start the pump at the lowest setting and move up until right before it hurts.

  • Try putting lanolin either on your nipples or on the inside of the flanges where the nipples are pulled. It makes them slide easier and it doesn't hurt as much
  • I was going through the exact same thing up until about one week ago. I've been pumping 3x's per day at work. I was sooooo sore. It took some getting used to that's for sure.

I actually dreaded pumping because of the soreness; however, it's so much better now. I still use the highest setting.

Also, I just starting putting coconut oil on my nips while pumping, now it's a piece of cake. Hope it gets better for you.
