Too much therapy

Grant is 20 months and has been and therapy since 6 months old. He has been getting PT 2x weekly, OT and ST weekly. I'm tired. I see benefits from PT but not so much OT or ST. Can I just focus on PT and quit everything else? Does that make me a bad parent?

Re: Too much therapy

  • we regularly take breaks.  Both my boys have a lot of therapy and sometimes they just need time to relax.  So we used to take off 2 weeks in the summer and 2 weeks in the winter around christmas.  It was great to have time to recharge, do what we want, stay in our pajamas all day, etc.

And by the end of the 2 weeks I was ready to start again.  What about rotating OT and ST?  So you only have one of those a week?

I understand the burned out feeling, like it's pointless and no progress is being made.  And you rush around keeping your house cleaned, or driving you kid all over the state for it, and you get stressed out trying to implement a million different suggestions from multiple therapists in your daily life.  It's exhausting.

I will also say though, that my kids don't have any behavioral issues and don't need a strict routine. So stopping for 2 weeks and starting up again never bothered them, we didn't struggle with any regression after those 2 weeks.
To my boys:  I will love you for you Not for what you have done or what you will become I will love you for you I will give you the love The love that you never knew

  • We are currently on a hippotherapy break until late winter because I need the break if that gives you any idea of how I would answer your question.   :-)

I completely understand! I drive DS1 to his speech therapy program downtown Monday through Thursday, plus an hour a week of OT and early interventionist. And we got told today it's time to add about 6 hours of ABA a week. I am tired :(

  • I have two kids in therapy and I'm exhausted keeping up.  We always take off the week between Christmas and New Year's and a week or two in the summer.  Also, we stopped OT for several months for my oldest as he didn't seem to be progressing and never wanted to try either.  After about three months off, we are starting back next week.   Sometimes breaks are good.  Sometimes I find switching therapists are good too if you aren't progressing.

I know how exhausting it is for just one DS with ASD.

DS is in school 25 hours a week, 11 hours a week of ABA in our home, 2 hours of ABA at daycare, 2 hours of private speech, 15 hours of being with mainstreamed daycare kids.

We use to have OT one hour a week but the COTA sent DS home 4 times, 2 of those times were documented. We dropped it due to scheduling and it was not working out. The school offered OT one hour a week so that filled that void.

Of course DH and I want a break from it all but there is nothing to do in Roswell but therapy. DS had some regression so we just increased therapy for the past year to avoid that. Sunday is our only day off without therapy and we have the tightest budget with just me working.

  • We are thinking about taking a break from aquatic therapy. DD has been screaming any time we even pull out her bathing suit. The other therapy sessions she seems to do fine with. My house isn't always clean for the therapists, but I know they see worse.

We will be adjusting the schedule in January when we start special needs preschool that is staffed with PT and OTs.
