Pregnant after a Loss

Question about +HPT after D&C (loss mentioned)

I hope I'm in the right forum.

I had a missed miscarriage the first week of September and had a D&C on September 11th. I was supposed to be 10.5 weeks but the fetus measured 8.5 at my first ultrasound. I had a normal period starting October 8th and have been TTC since then. I guess for fun, this morning I took a HPT and had the slightest squintest positive test. Even my husband saw the very, very faint line. I never had my HCG levels drawn after the D&C and I never took any HPT except the one this morning. So I have nothing to compare today's to. I'm not letting myself get very hopeful or excited about today's test incase it is just leftover hormones.

My questions is for other women who were taking HPT after miscarrying, how long were they staying positive? Does it matter how far along you were before the loss? (Futher along = higher hormone levels = longer HPT?)

Thanks very much.

(I hope this post doesn't come off as "Am I pregnant??" lol)

Re: Question about +HPT after D&C (loss mentioned)

  • I had a MMC last December that was very similar to yours in the timing (10.5 weeks).  I did have my levels tracked down to zero (well, <5) and it took about 7-8 weeks.  I had a normal period 29 days after my D&C, and it was about 3 more weeks before my levels reached <5.

The only way to know for sure is to call your OB.   He/she will probably want to draw betas to see if they are rising or falling (rising = you're pregnant, falling = more likely residual hcg from  your mmc).

HPTs aren't terribly accurate for this, unfortunately.  You can't really rely on them getting darker or lighter to mean anything.  You should get in to see your doctor.

  • I had a D&C at the beginning of Aug after an ultrasound at what should have been almost 8 wks showed the baby had stopped growing. I got a negative HPT 5 wks after the procedure and my first period started the following day. It's certainly possible for the hormone level to go down quickly, but I agree with PP. I would call your OB and ask them to draw betas and see if they are rising. Good luck!

  • @Avion22 is exactly right. In terms of my personal experience, after my loss at 7 weeks, it took 6 weeks for my betas to reach zero (my levels were tracked weekly).

Same for me, it took about 7 weeks after my d&c for my levels to reach zero. I would call your doctor, they will be able to tell you what is going on.

  • It took me about 3 months for my levels to get down to zero.  That was a pretty long time, according to the doctors.

  • My betas took about a month to drop to less than 5 after my D&C.  My MWs decided to track them to <5 when I was still getting positive HPTs two weeks after my D&C.  I would definitely call your doctor and see what they want you to do.

    BFP#2:  EDD 2/11/14, MMC confirmed 7/15/13 (growth stopped at 6 weeks), D&C @ 12 weeks 7/25/13

  • The longest it ever took my levels to go back down was 10 weeks and required a second D&C.  It depends on the pregnancy I guess.

  • *update*

I started my period today. I should have just waited until I was late to take a test. Thank you everyone for your responses! It sucks that it can take so long for the hormones to go to 0. It is frustrating when you are TTC.
