GTKY: most expensive meal you've ever eaten?

@buckeyebride22 's hot seat got me thinking (and practically hyperventilating) about going out to eat. I pitch a fit if we have to pay $40 dollars for a meal, all I can see is a weeks worth of groceries being whisked away by my attentive waiter/waitress. That doesn't mean we don't go out occasionally and if the food is very good then I don't mind paying maybe $60. However, I was blown away when she mentioned a $400 dollar meal! Nobody else said a thing about it though, which brings me to my point...is this a normal thing? What's the most expensive meal you've ever had?

ETA: I fail at TB so I guess there is a poll, above this post instead of inside it.

  • Can we make this into a poll? :)

Was that $400 for one person, or a couple?

My husband and I are foodies, and we've had several expensive meals. We usually do an extravagant one about once a year. I think the most expensive one ever was in Bermuda. There were five of us and the bill came to $1300.

(I've often said to him that all we need to do to afford a baby is to trim our dining out budget.)

ETA: That was before tip, so the total we paid was more like $1600 -- which works out to be about $320 per person.
  • umm..with only 1 glass of wine each and no dessert or appetizer my most expensive meal was probably upwards of $250 for 2 people..but if we had really splurged could've done worse..But DH and I only do meals like that for a special occasion like Valentines day or our anniversary.

  • My husband has eaten at Joel Rubachon (sp) in Vegas and it's $350 per person for their tasting course. The most expensive I've ever had was at Prime in Vegas. My steak was $60 and that didn't include any sides etc. My dad is a culinary institute of America (Hyde park,ny) grad so I've always eaten well.

@runnergrl6675 -- I went to Prime when I was in Vegas. I love Jean Georges restaurants. My husband does IT work for the restaurant group Culinary Concepts by Jean Georges, so sometimes we're able to arrange for special reservations at those restaurants. My absolute favorite one is Spice Market in the meat packing district in Manhattan. (Side note, @vstevens, have you been there? Do you like Asian/Indian fusion cuisine?)
  • Ruth's Chris Steak House was pretty expensive! $100 pp is too muchj for me. I hate not being able to use coupons! That was before kids. Now, it is more like Baja Fresh and Jimmy John's! :P

  • @MiaMyPuggle- mine was at Ruth's Chris SteakHouse too:) Or Shula's...DH has a thing for good steak!

  • @peanutmuse YES! Asian food is actually my favorite (I lived in Japan and have travelled a lot in SE Asia), so we eat a lot of it - it's been a couple of years since I've been to Spice Market, but it's still reliably good from what people say. Though my favorite meat packing Asian is still Morimoto...god that was a good meal...

Shula's at the Promenade Shoppes? I didn't eat there yet. We went to Melt and that was very expensive!!! But, RCS was my most expensive. Even over places in Maui!

It's actually the Indian flair in the Spice Market menu that makes me happy. I freaking love Indian food. And I'm giggling like a 12 year old boy at "my favorite meat packing Asian"...

@MiaMyPuggle- Did I not realize we're in the same area? I have never been to Melt where we had to pay, DH's work had their Christmas party at Melt last year and it was pretty good...made me want to come back to eat! But yeah it was Shula's in the Promenade shops! DH's work does meetings there and he always talked about how good it was so he took me there for Valentines a few years ago. It's very comparable to RCS in prices though.

LOL did NOT pick up on that when I was typing @peanutmuse ...

You'd love my neighborhood - we have this amazing Indian Place nearby that delivers super quick, and they have the BEST whole tandoori chicken ... and the lamb vindaloo is pretty darn good too.  Actually, now I'm thinking maybe I should order tonight...

  • I love a good chef's menu / tasting menu with wine pairings.

I would say that most expensive meal I've personally had has been around $350 per person (that's everything, food, booze/wine and tip).

My in-laws love a good 2-3 hour meal.  When I first started dating DH, it made me uncomfortable, but now it's just routine. A night out includes cocktails, appetizers, sometimes separate salad, main course, dessert & usually a bottle of wine per 2 people (sometimes per person - we are a boozy crowd).

  • Again, @peanutmuse has made me want Indian food when there is none to be had at the moment.

As soon as DH and I manage to get to NYC without children in tow (or if DH's friends are willing to watch the kiddos while we have a night out there) I'm going to go to Spice Market. It looks right up our alley.

I'm cool like that, @moosebaby2011. It's only because I have a weakness for Indian food myself.
  • My most expensive meal was in Walla Walla, WA at the Whitehouse Crawford. I didn't get a beverage or dessert, and it was $80 for just my dinner. The tables tab was more like upwards of $600 (4ppl).

@daltoso DH and I went there when we were doing a West Coast road trip a couple years ago. Loved it!

  • I'm clearly in the minority here, but I don't think I have ever had a meal that cost more than $50 in my entire life.

This does not include long dinners where there is more drinking than eating.

  • Holy Moley guys! DH and I love food but we have never spent more than $150 (tip and drinks included) for a meal. We have probably had a more expensive meal but it was when we were out for work with his boss's and they paid. Both of us just have a big problem spending so much money on food. But we do have a couple of friends who will spend any amount as long as it's good.

  • My H and I are definitely big into going out for meals on weekends.  We will splurge on bigger meals for special occasions and I would say the bill will run us around $130-$150 depending on the alcohol we purchase.  If we ended up in a bigger city celebrating I would expect the bill to be closer to $200   We certainly would gasp at a bill over that though because we do have our limits but I can certainly understand why some people spend a lot of money on fine meals.  there is something about the experience that it just becomes the entertainment instead of doing some extra shopping or going to see a show.
