Changing table?

Is it really a necessity? I really want one but not sure if I should just do without it.

Re: Changing table?

  • Not a necessity. A lot of people just stick a changing pad on top of a dresser. I have a large armoir and I'm using the shelf where the tv would sit as my changing station. Nothing wrong with thinking outside the box, it's just a matter of personal preference and what works for you.

  • I had a long dresser but gave it to my cousin about two years ago for her little one. I didn't think I was having more babies. All I have now is tall dresser. I really do need a place to store pampers, etc as well as protect my back.

  • You can always look on Craigslist for a long dresser or changing table if you don't want to pay for something new. That's actually how I found my armoir. A lot of people just use the pack n play at first, I don't know if you have one. The reality is, you can change a diaper anywhere, on the bed or the sofa or wherever is convenient...you just need to decide what will be most functional to suit your needs. For myself, I like the convenience of a station where everything is in one place and easy to get to. But you could put a basket full of diaper necessities anywhere. I would just think about what you think is going to be most comfortable for you.

  • I'm really leaning toward getting it, because I need a place for stuff I got from my baby shower like pampers, wipes, toiletries, sheets and blankets.

  • A necessity, no, something I opted for...yes.  For my daughter I used and still use to this day an old dresser with a changing pad on the top in her room.  I like the dresser idea because I can use it long after she is out of diapers.  With the new baby I bought a changing table/dresser combo off of craigslist.  It is a really good piece of furniture that I just had to stain to match the crib I am being hand me downed.  I only paid $75 or so for it.  It is real wood, not particle board and heavy as all get out.  I like having everything in one spot when changing a little one.  When not upstairs in the babies room I will use the pack n play to change the new little one.  My daughter I change on the couch or the floor or where ever I can wrangle her long enough to get it done

Like Guennie said I would check out Craigslist there are always a ton of baby things on there that are decently priced.

Hope you had a nice baby shower.

  • I have both had, and not had, a changing table with my babies. The one I had, I got used and had for #2 & #3  (18 mo apart) and I did like it, but ran out of room when 4 and then 5 arrived lol. I resold it.

I think if you have room, you might like it. It was nice to have stuff organized in one spot. But it was just as easy to keep supplies around and change on the bed, sofa, ect.

I planned on using a dresser top (low-boy) but my neighbor just passed her changing table down to me. I have a two story house and plan on putting the changing table in the kids' play room downstairs and use the low -boy dresser in his room upstairs as a changing area there. I would not buy a new changing table if you don't have access to a nice 2nd hand one. Go the dresser route.

Definitely more convenient to have a table or dresser, since I have rowdy 2 yr olds that will throw toys or step on each other when I changing them on the living room floor... so I don't want to have to constantly freak out everytime I change the newborn in their arms' reach or war path(s).

  • My folks got us a changing table with DS2. We still use it all the time. As a pp said, we did go through a time frame where he was a squirmy worm so we moved to the floor. But now he lays still again mostly when we give him a toy to hold so we are back to using it. It helps my back a lot. Not a necessity but very handy. We plan to move it to the newborn's room.

  • After having c-sections, I found the changing table to be invaluable. I simply could not bend over to change the baby anywhere else.
