Parenting after a Loss

Head support

Since there's obviously a wider range of ages of LOs on this board vs my BMB, I figured I'd ask this here.  What is the typical age for babies to support their heads when they're upright (as in, when you're holding them)?

P has great head support and control during tummy time, but we still have to give a lot of support any other time.  The PT isn't sure if it's related to his plagiocephaly or not.  If we let go or lessen our support, he wants to hyperextend his head backwards.  It's so puzzling b/c his head support is seriously stellar on his tummy.

Re: Head support

  • We are seeing something similar with my DS2.. except opposite sort of.  He has incredible head support when sitting or being held.. I rarely ever have to add extra support!  However, he doesn't have the "chin tuck" reflex at all when you go to curl him up from a laying position.. he'll just let his head drop back and dangle.. PT isn't sure why he does this, either, given his excellent head control other times?  He also has plagio/tort.  I think they just like to make us paranoid :)

  • We had the opposite problem.  A had great head control when we held him upright but was terrible at lifting his head during tummy time.

I think this is probably one of those "babies develop differently" types of things.  Is the PT concerned?

  • @julymomma2u2- I agree that they like to make us worry.  Boo :(

@mmm79- I would say the PT is mildly concerned.  She thinks it's b/c of his head shape (like the one side is heavier and that's interfering with his support).
