Hi All,

Congrats on your recent deliveries! I've had two of my own but it's been a couple of years. My best friend is having her second today and I'm stumped for a good gift. For her first I gave her a nice personalized minkee blanket. I could do that again but it seems kind of lame. So what were your favorite baby gifts?

Maybe I should clarify, because this is her second, she has all the "practical" stuff. I'm looking for something a little more personal..."special." Thanks for the suggestions though. They would have been great for her first....

A swing is a lifesaver but an expensive gift IMO. Someone gave me a Wubanub (Google it) and LO loves it. Something about having the little stuffed animal to touch maybe... I also loved our Miracle Blanket. Another life saver!

I will second the Boppy Newborn Lounger as an absolute staple in our house. Great for hanging out or napping while we are present and on the couch as well. Several people gave us personalized blankets from Pottery Barn Kids - one is a stroller blanket and the other is really soft. We love both of those.

I'm really not a big fan of getting big ticket items for babies that aren't a firstborn, especially if you aren't family. Something personalized or handmade is always a green light for me. You could also look at Lamaze toys. My LO thoroughly enjoys his and it gives him something to look at when he's in his car seat.

I think Swaddle Me blankets are fantastic and awesome to use. I just wish we could've used ours longer but LO hated his arms being in the swaddle by the time he was 3 or 4 weeks old.

If she uses a boppy you can get really great covers on etsy...I have two personalized minky covers from there.

A friend gave us a pbk towel embroidered with his name which we love

Someone have us bottle labels with his name too... Still very practical but not something anyone else had thought of

I splurged and were gifted Aden and Anais swaddling blankets this time around; something I didn't spend the money on last time. I love them.

Otherwise... meh. I had a million blankets leftover from DD1 and am just not the keepsake-y kind of person.

Have you tried asking her what she might need?

I like the idea of a keepsake box. As a STM I know I won't keep up with a baby book or memory book but would love an easy and pretty place to stash important items for her!

One of the things I registered for that might be appropriate for a second baby is a nice sized box to store keepsakes in. I am the anti-hoarder, but I let myself keep one box of keepsakes from my own life, so I am trying to do the same for my baby. I bet you could even find one that can be personalized if you are looking for something fun and personal.

Thanks for the ideas. Give me some things to think about. I can't ask her because she'll just say I shouldn't get her anything, but it's my best friend so of course I will.

We just got a present in the mail that is absolutely amazing and completely personalized!! It's a wooden block that has our LO's name, date and time of birth, etc. I found something similar on etsy when I just searched for wooden baby block. Maybe it's because of the hormones and I'm emotional today, but when I opened the box it made me tear up. It's perfect.

Hand crocheted blanket. It's beautiful and very useful. I also like a lot of the books we got. I never knew anything about children's books and we were given some really sweet ones that I love reading to LO.

My Aunt got us a wooden block that had information about our baby on each side (her name, weight, length, city of birth, etc). It was very sweet. I found them on Etsy and plan on buying one for our friend who is due in March.

@meeshe I have another idea for you. A friend of mine got our son a gorgeous book called "My Very Own Name" that looks like a beautiful childrens book that is 100% personalized to his first, middle, and last names. The animals tell a story and spell the baby's name throughout. It's awesome! The company is called I See Me and they do all sorts of personalized stories as well. Super cute and a great keepsake!

So, from a practical standpoint, one of the nicest things we got was food from Whole Foods from our neighbors. It was just nice to have something wholesome and healthy and easy to heat up at our convenience. Along those lines, you could give her a gift card for Zifty so they could order in food from wherever they wanted. Some people think gift cards are impersonal, but I find them practical. I would much rather receive one than give them, so I get that it can be less fun/personal.
One of the nicest "splurge" gifts we got was a piggy bank from Tiffany's. Some friends of ours gave us one for our first child and did the same for our second. One is a pig, the other an elephant, so I don't know how many different ones they have. I don't own anything from Tiffany's and I'm afraid to find out how much they cost. It was just a beautiful gift, right down to the Tiffany box.
