  Are you getting the eye-burning whiff of ammonia or just a stinky boy's bathroom pee smell? If it's ammonia and you smell it as soon as you take the diaper off after only a couple hours' worth of wear, I'd be worried about the wash routine.   It might just be stronger pee. It's not strong like his ON diapers, which are unbearably horrible, by the way!
  
  Does ammonia build up slowly, or is it just there, super strong all of a sudden?

  It's possible just soaking his overnight diapers in hot water for a couple of hours will help. Do you have specific ON diapers, or they in your regular rotation?

  I have different day time diapers. They are bamboo inserts I lay in a cover. I have had them a few months, 3 maybe?

  The bamboo inserts are my day time. I am using small prefolds for night now. I was using BGFs but he started peeing through recently.

  I would soak the overnight diapers, but it sounds like your just dealing with stronger pee during the day. Especially, if you aren't dealing with a rash.

  Thanks ladies! I'm going to be better about offering water with solids. He's having harder poop too.

  In my experience, ammonia builds up over time. I could smell a stronger odor in DS's ON diapers before we ever had any rash issues. The diapers would smell clean after being laundered, but by the next morning the ammonia stench could knock you over! Now that I do the hot water soaks, I barely smell any ammonia in the mornings.
