Who opted out of any blood test and NT scan? I was feeling good about our choice to just let this baby be what it will but now with all of the results popping up on our board, I find myself wondering. Anyone else in the same boat?

I've opted out with my previous pregnancies and this one. My midwife agreed with my decision and never forced the tests so that helps me feel like I've made the a good decision. I'm young with very low risk factors.

I opted out the first time and felt fine about it. I think we'll opt out of the second trimester one this time, too.

We opted out as well. We still got the ultrasound, but none of the testing.

We opted out as well. Insurance wouldn't cover it unless the doctor felt it was medically necessary. Plus if anything was wrong it wouldn't have changed how we felt about the pregnancy. I have to admit I'm super jealous of all the mama's that found out the sex early... It's killing me not knowing! We'll know soon enough!

Our doctor didn't recommend them as necessary for us (didn't even mention them until I asked), so we opted out.

We opted out with my son & this time around, too. We would have had to pay OOP, plus I am a worrier by nature. If the tests came back showing a higher risk for something, the wait for more conclusive testing would have killed me.

I had them done, but my doctor doesn't do them so he sends anyone who wants one to an MFM for the testing. Most of his patients don't have them done.

I've opted out all three times because insurance doesn't cover them. However my daughter has a mom hereditary chromosomal abnormality so I knew I would be sent to a specialist for a level 2 sono that would catch physical markers so I felt better about skipping blood tests.

We opted out. I will still get the ultrasound but no testing. It wouldn't change the way we feel. I might have consented had my dr not told me the only reason they do these tests is to recommend termination if positive. Thats not ok with me.

We opted out as well. It wasn't covered by insurance and I am a huge worrier. Just the slightest chance that something that was wrong would have caused so much unnecessary stress that it wasn't worth it. Plus, the results wouldn't have changed our minds about the baby.

Yikes! Recommend termination if what is positive? Downs and trisomy etc? That wouldn't sit well with me either!

We didn't do it with DD1 or this pregnancy either. I worry too much already. Of course my ob offered them, but when I declined he agreed.

I opted out. No matter what happens with this child, we're going to tackle it head on.

Also, For all of the mommas saying they opted out of all tests with previous pregnancies( @thomas930 ), did you opt out of the glucose test as well? I've heard of women doing this and I haven't done my research as to why they would/wouldn't. Just wondering if opting out is common?

It wasn't even offered to me by my OB. I did have some genetic testing done, though-- a CVS done at 12 weeks, but solely because we needed to find out the sex for a condition I have. The CVS was actually a surprise--I went in for a genetics counselor meeting with the perinatal department at the hospital I will be delivering at (I was referred by my OB because of my condition) and they kind of really pushed it so we went with it. Suggesting the CVS and getting me in to do it all happened in like, 30 minutes time so it wasn't planned at all. My OB wasn't even going to refer me to the genetics counselor but then decided he might as well because it might give us some info for my risk in passing this condition on in future pregnancies.

So, if that was tl:dr, my OB wasn't concerned about my doing one at all--didn't even offer it.

I had decided not to do it also but my new OB after hearing my background medical history of my personal birth story of my mother giving birth to me and my problems I had he kind of talked me to do it just to make sure that anything is wrong with this baby they're prepared on the other end because they weren't prepared when I was born.
But I never had testing with DD No one was concered and she is just fine.

I opted out. I am 26 so insurance wouldn't cover it and my DH and I decided together that we were OK with not doing it.

We opted out as well. The stress of it all would have been too much for me. I'm so happy to hear all of you did too. I've been nervous that we were the only ones. And my dr made me feel weird and kind of dumb when I told her no to the 16 week blood test. Thanks for posting this.

I am not getting any genetic testing done either. It wouldnt matter the results! We would keep the baby no matter what and I would rather not worry my whole pregnancy. We will tackle it if needed when the time arrives.

I did the genetic blood testing, but not the testing for Spina bifida or the NT scan. Apparently I missed the NT scan window so my dr never offered it...weird.

These are babies #7&8 for me and I've NEVER done ANY testing. The OB doesn't even ask me now lol

We opted out too! Nothing would change for us regardless of the results. The tests also seem to tell you your chances but not whether or not your child actually has anything you're testing for-- so either way we still wouldn't know for sure. That was our thought process.

This! My Dr hasn't asked me yet as I haven't had an apt since I was 10 weeks, but I will decline as I did for the first one. I wouldn't terminate anyway. I will have an US at 16 wks as he will have to measure the head, limbs, organs, etc... He doesn't do glucose testing. I don't know why. I actually forgot you do it in the US until I heard a friend talking about it!

Although we are both young and first time parents with no medical family history, we decided to do the genetics testing. The results wouldn't change a thing and we would love the baby just the same. We just wanted to be prepared in case anything came up. Everything did turn out great!

We did all the genetic testing because we really didn't know any better. My doctors kind of made it seem like it is just something that everyone does. Everything was fine until the second half of my sequential screening came back with an increased possibility of downs. Which of course threw my husband and I into a panic. After meeting with the genetic counselor we opted to do the Materni21 screening to make sure everything is ok. After telling me of the increased risks there was no way we couldn't do the extra testing because now I just can't NOT know.
I think in hindsight I would have preferred to not do the screenings at all. The results really don't change anything and I think we would have been better off not knowing about any increased risks. We are currently awaiting the results of our latest screening and I don't think I will sleep right now until we know everything is ok.

We opted out with DS and we've opted out this time. Despite the fact that I am AMA, we've had a recent loss and a somewhat complicated pregnancy this time, my doctor just explained what they are and accepted it when we opted out.

We are opting out of almost everything. I had my progesterone checked because of my previous loss and I had the standard panel done, but that's been it!

I declined it, if we was high risk they wud perform an amnitosis (bad spelling- removing some amniotic fluid) which can cause miscarriage, and all that added worry. 2 people I know where told to be high risk and had 'normal' children at birth. Hmmm

Agreed. The glucose test should not be optional.

My dr did not present this test as optional last pregnancy or this one. They were basically like here's where you can go, now get it done.

Eta a question. Does anyone know if there is any difference between the glucose test and checking your blood sugar levels like a diabetic would? I'm curious why they draw the blood from your arm rather than just do a finger prick?

We did the testing because it was covered by insurance (if it hadnt been, we would've skipped because I'm 29). I must say though, I hate the "it doesn't matter because we wouldn't terminate" argument because it implies if you're getting it that you would. If we got results that this baby would be born with Down's syndrome, we simply would've used the next 6 months to educate ourselves on how to handle and what kind of programs are available in our area. I think either choice is fine, but my doc personally never made me felt like it was simply to offer termination.

I skipped the early testing last time and this time and I'm fine with that decision. Here in Canada they don't tell you or even guess at the sex until the a/s scan so we're waiting for that.
