Backseat riding

Hey y'all! Just wondering how long mothers and/or fathers ride in the backseat with their LO? Lincoln is 2 months now and I still ride in the backseat when my DH and I are together. He's pretty much asleep by the time we leave the neighborhood and doesn't really fuss at all when he is awake.. As long as we're moving, he's good! Just curious when others made the transition back to the front seat.

Re: Backseat riding

  • If he's spitting up a lot I do, so I can keep an eye on him and wipe up. Otherwise, I sit up front.

It depends. If it is a longer ride, DH wants me to sit in the back with him.

We bought a mirror to put in the back seat so we can see him when we are in the front but we keep forgetting about it.

Edit: Apparently the mirrors can be a safety issue. I might forget about it all together and just ride in the back if we have a long ride.

  • I sit in the back if its a long car ride, but if its just a few minutes, I ride up front.

  • I only hop in the back if she gets fussy. However, we have a long trip soon and I'll ride in back with her the whole way.

  • I always sit in back. Dd hates the car. I can somewhat entertain or distract her while I'm back there.

  • I ride in the back because LO has a threshold for her car seat and melts down once that threshold is met. The threshold is getting longer so hopefully soon I'll be able to move back up front.

  • If she's being fussy I sit in the back with her, but otherwise I sit up front. I do have a mirror in my car (because is usually just me if it gets used). I personally love the mirror, she stares at it and it keeps her entertained.

  • I only hop in the back if she is screaming and we are on a long ride. With DD1 I rode in the back for the first couple car rides.

  • I was wondering the same thing! DS is pretty calm in the car but I like interacting and entertaining him while he's back there.

DH asked when I'd be moving back to the front... I think I may start this week since LO is so well behaved in the car. I'll definitely ride in her back during long car rides.

  • I never sat in the back. Not even on the way home from the hosp. I have crawled in the back on several occasions to stop a meltdown, then crawled back up.

Husband hates it when I'm back there, he says it makes him feel like a chauffeur.
  • I've never ridden in the back seat, even when it was just one of them back there. Now that we have three across, it's not even a possibility. Whoever isn't driving is in charge of keeping everyone happy.

When I'm by myself w all of them, I just deal with whatever at red lights. I also have a mirror so that I can see what's going on.

  • DS is fine on most car rides, but I like sitting in the back. We don't have a lot of awake time with him during the week after work, so we alternate who drives so we can spend a little extra time with our little man. I don't see this changing any time soon.

  • DD usually falls asleep so we don't ride in back anymore. I have a mirror set up to keep an eye on her.

    Burp- double post

  • I drive a lot without DH so LO is usually in the back by himself. One of us goes in the back if he is fussy.
  • I sit in back every once in a while when she gets fussy. She has her older siblings back there with her most the time. They keep her entertained.

  • If he is fussy or it's a longer ride then I will sit in the back. We just play it by ear. He can get really mad fast and it hurts my heart not to try and comfort him.

  • I sat in the back on the way home from the hospital. That was the only time.  He does have his big sisters to tell me things like "his head is floppy", "he's drooling", "his eyes are closed".

  • We do when she is fussy. Sometimes Dh does but mostly I do as we have a small backseat. I enjoy it as I hate driving and i get exclusive smiles from LO

  • Never. But his big bro is back there with him.

  • With DS1 one of us rode in the back until he was 2 and forward facing because we had to move the sedan's front seat so far forward to get the car seat to fit that there was no leg room for a front seat passenger. We've winced bought a larger vehicle

  • If I'm not driving, I'm back there with her. She sits right next to her 2 year old sister, so I like to monitor what's going on. Also, my 4 year old is in the third row, and it's nearly impossible to hand her stuff from the front, so it just makes everything easier if I'm back there holding down the fort.

I ended up staying back there pretty much DD#2's whole first year of life, so I'm sure it'll be about the same with DD #3. I told DH we'll enjoy rides together in the front some day...

  • I sit back there mainly because we haven't upgrade from our small cars yet and the front passenger seat has to be pushed forward for lo's car seat and my legs are too long for that . Once we make the SUV upgrade I will sit up front.

Thanks ladies! :) I'll probably go back to the front on shorter rides but definitely stay in the back for longer stretches. I'd feel a lot better getting a mirror for the shorter rides.

My LO pretty much screams any time he has to be in the car seat. If we do happen to ride together, one of us sits back there with him. H and I rarely ride in the same car so its usually a rough ride with baby screaming and mommy having severe anxiety over it :(

  • Neither of us has ever sat in the back seat with her. She does fine in the car unless she's really hungry.

  • It never occurred to me to ride in the back with one. Like @carrotcake said....now with 3 it is impossible.

  • I only do it if she's fussy cuz SO wants me to but she usually sleeps after a bit. I try to time car tripS when she is due for a nap. Being in the front with SO is our only quality time so I pretend we're on a date ;)
  • Never. There's really not much room back there with 2 car seats.

This is me anytime I leave the house alone w/ DD. I rarely drive anywhere because of it. Luckily, I can wear and walk her to coffee shops, bookstores, etcetera. Otherwise, I would be a hermit.

  • I rode back there for the first 2 weeks. But haven't since. We haven't taken a long car ride though...so I might if we'll be driving for more than 30 minutes. He's usually pretty content in the car and we have a mirror set up so the driver can see him :)
  • No disrespect but can I ask why all of you sit in the back?

It's very rare that I'm able to ride in the back since DH and I take separate cars however it keeps my LO calm. He literally screams the entire car ride when he's in the back alone. Things are much calmer when someone is able to be in the back with him. I wish someone could always be in the back with him but that's unrealistic.

    It works for us.

  • I've been riding up front since week 2. LO loves the car and is fast asleep within minutes of being put in her car seat. there's really no point in riding back with her.

  • I only sat in the back when we brought her home from the hospital. DH and I both have mirrors in our cars so we can see how she's doing. She usually falls asleep after a few minutes anyway.
