Cloth Diapering

I have a wash issue...

Apparently. I/we thought dd had a tide sensitivity last week so I hot water stripped everything last week and switched to nellies. It got rid of the chemical burn but then she was just generally rashy. We have been having trouble with our water softener in general so I did a dawn strip yesterday and yet the issue still remains. I put her into a new bg that had only been washed once (with tide) and the rash went away. So I'm now really lost on what to do to the rest of my stash that has been in rotation for the last 3 months. We have well water and a water softener. I wash every other day. I do a cold or warm rinse/hot wash with detergent/ cold rinse.

It's on the front of her groin area only. Not in the folds or on her bottom. It's pink/red, slightly raised. We have some prefolds but mostly use kawaii and RaR pockets.

  • its yeast if its raised and esp in folds. You need an antifungal baby safe cream. Keep dry as possible n wash w mild soap pat dry, put cream on every diaper change. No petroleum based creams

  • We need to have a sticky on what not to do. DO NOT USE DAWN. It doesn't work.

  • I did a hot water strip with no change. Then I did a dawn strip because I honestly didn't know what else to try.

  • No bubbles. I determined it has to be some type of build up issue since she did fine in the new bg.

  • Is there anything in your water softener that could be staying in the diapers and irritating her? I wonder if the once-washed BG didn't irritate her b/c it had only been through your washer once, and not so much b/c of the detergent you used. In other words, I wonder if it is a build-up of some kind but possibly not detergent. Could it be ammonia?

This is what I meant by some type of build up. Something in the water or something. It's not detergent because there haven't been any bubbles. I don't think it's ammonia because there is no smell.

And yes this is my 2nd post this week about these issues because no one I know IRL uses cloth and I've been at a loss.

  • I would use some RLR. It's probably mineral build up. Though it could just be a sensitivity to wetness if you use a lot of PF's. I'd do a warm pre wash (not just a rinse, wash those suckers) and then your hot wash. You may need to go get a water testing kit from like Lowes or Walmart to see what is going on in your water. You may need to add extra water softener like Calgon into your routine. I don't think detergent is your problem.

  • I'd try Nana's suggestion and then come back and let us know how it goes.

  • I thought the chemical burn went away but she was still rashy... Now I'm confused.

  • The chemical burn went away but then she used nellies and she was rashy. So if nellies was causing the rash then going back to tide sans chemical burn would mean it's fixed right? Since the tide diaper caused no issues it shouldn't be a tide sensitivity.
yes, if I remember correctly, that would be right.
