When is the earliest you would fly with you're LO

It may not be realistic but I have a lot of my immediate family in another state who I would love to go visit before coming back to work from maternity leave. I'm just curious as to how long you would wait to fly with an infant? Would three months be too early? The flight would be about 4 hours.  I know this might be a matter of personal preference for most. Thanks and sorry in advance if this is a silly question!

  • I will be flying in July for my sister's wedding in Canada (aka 3 hour flight). The baby will be ALMOST 4 months so I've been wondering the same thing!

We flew with our first when she was 6 weeks old. It was a short flight from TN to FL and she did perfectly fine on it. Our pedi just recommend that they get their first set of shots before flying/being put on a plane since they are around so many people.

  • That's what I was thinking... the younger the easier! Good idea to just check with Pedi first though and make sure to get those first shots.

  • The earliest I flew with DD was 18 months, but just because we didn't have anywhere to go before that! I think younger babies would be easy to fly with since the sleep so much, but I agree check with the dr and play it by ear with how your baby seems temperament wise.
  • I flew across the Atlantic ocean when I was three days old, so anything can be done. I'd ask your pediatrician when you find one. :)

  • I haven't flown yet, but my cousin lives in Cali and just flew to MA with her 8w old, and on to Spain (where her ILs live) after a few days there. Baby flew like a champ.

  • I first flew with DD when she was 7 weeks old to visit my family. Since, she's flown countless times. IMO, the younger they are, the easier it is. They sleep more and you can nurse them back to sleep or to clm them down if they get fussy.

  • I would wait until the LO gets their shots because of the germs. Young babies are easier to deal with on a flight than a toddler!

  • I'd wait until after 6 weeks but other than that, go ahead.  Just be prepared to nurse, give a bottle or a pacifier during take off and landing to allow for the ears to pop.  By 3 months they will have had some of their shots and be less fragile, plus it won't be flu season for this baby.

  • Little babies are SO easy to travel with, especially if you are BFing! We started flying with DD when she was 3 mo (and her first flight was international) and it was a breeze. I do agree I'd feel more comfortable if the baby were a little older - 2 or 3 mo (as opposed to 4 weeks, etc) - because of the germ factor.

  • We took my second baby when he was only 4 weeks old and he did great and slept or nursed the whole time! His pedi said it was fine! He did have a blow out explosion of a diaper at one point and that was the worst part! Haha!

  • I like this post. My mom keeps nagging me to bring the LO to NJ before my maternity leave is up (I'm going to take 12 weeks) and this makes me think it's possible.

For you ladies that have flown how do you bring the child? In the car seat? Or do you just wear them?
  • We flew with my son at just shy of four months, easy peasy. Will likely be flying with this one around five weeks, as soon as we can get him a passport.
  • I flew with my DS when he was four weeks.
  • I think it would be easy once you are physically recovered from delivery and once breastfeeding is established, if you plan to breastfeed. As other ladies have said, I would be super nervous about the germs. I hated even taking DS to the grocery store when he was so little.

  • I flew with my first son at 3months from New Orleans to Seattle. He slept the whole flight and never cried.
  • My friend flew with her baby at just under 3 months.  She said it was way easier to travel with her then than it is now that she's almost 9 months.  She brought her in a stroller then checked the stroller at the last minute and had her baby carrier on the plane.  She was EBF, I'm not sure how you would handle warming up the milk on a plane if you were FF.

  • Just thought of another issue: car seat. I know it's recommended not to check them on planes because of the fear of mishandling. Maybe someone at your destination could meet you at the airport with an infant seat, you could order one and have it shipped ahead of time. That's probably what i'd do.

  • I plan on traveling from the Virgin Islands to NYC in July. Baby will have just turned 4 months if he's born on his due date. That trip is gonna be a total of approximately 6-8 hours as there is a connecting flight in PR and there may be a 2-3 hour layover. Flight from PR to NY is approx 3 and a half hours.
  • Never really thought about this until you brought it up! My brother is getting married at the end if June! Good to hear all the encouragement about flying with a LO, it would be a 16 hour drive...
  • We flew with my son at 5 weeks. It really depends on what you feel comfortable with.
  • We'll be doing a transatlantic move with a 3-month old.

  • We flew with DD at 4 months old from Pittsburgh to Orlando. Our pedi rec. waiting until after the first set of shots. Flu season will likely be over which is a plus.

  • I plan to fly our baby from US to Ireland at abt 8-12 weeks old to be baptized. We don't have any family here & I'll be looking forward to heading home to be with everyone for a few weeks. Let's hope the flight goes smoothly :)

Us too!  We are hoping we will have a 2 month old by the time it happens, but eekkk.  The plan is currently for baby and I to fly while husband drives with stuff and dogs.  The thought of it seriously stresses me out.
  • I haven't been around all weekend to check on the most recent responses but I feel a lot more comfortable about flying on maternity leave now! It's nice to hear how easy it was for so many people. I will be EBFing hopefully so that should help. Also, I didn't even think of the car seat issue once we actually arrive there so that will be important to figure out in advance. Glad I'm not the only one who has thought about flying a couple months after LO's arrival! :)
