Baby Acupuncture

I know we've got a few crunchy mamas on this board. This will be the true test of your crunchiness. Have any of you had acupuncture done on your baby?

I've been going to an acupuncturist for a few years now. I went first when I had a 2 month long cold that I couldn't shake and he fixed me up within 2-3 sessions. Ever since then I've gone to him for just about every ailment and every 6 weeks for a tune-up. He even flipped DS when he was breech. :) Needless to say, I have a lot of faith and trust in him.

DS has a cold (coughing, runny nose, sneezing) so I'm taking him tomorrow morning to get acupuncture. I'm just curious if anyone has done this yet and how your baby responded. I'll let y'all know how DS does!

Re: Baby Acupuncture

  • I also went to an acupuncturist I turn my baby! She was posterior and almost 9lb and with her size she just wasn't budging until she turned. The acupuncturist also induced labor so that I could have my homebirth. Before all of that I might not have believed acupuncture to be so powerful but I am now sold as well.

I haven't taken DD in yet. She's had two colds and fought off a third. Otherwise she's been in the pink. The first two colds were nothing and this third time she was coughing for a couple of days and then fine so I never thought to take her in. I'll remember it for next time though and I'll be curious to read about how it goes for your lil guy!

  • So he had his acupuncture done this morning. I think it went well. The doctor did it in stages and gave him breaks in between. The only time he cried a lot was when he put the needles in points on his back. I know from experience that those are the most painful points. I walked outside with him while the needles were in to keep him relaxed since it hurts if you move.

He got needles on his hands, feet, legs, ears, top of his head, and back. Not all at once though. Then the doctor put some moxybustion oil on his back, back of his head, and feet, and blow dried the areas to warm them up and activate the oil. DS seemed the particularly hate that part. Then he fell asleep in the car, transferred to his mattress easily (which is shocking), and is still asleep an hour later. (again, this is shocking) Poor little bub. Hopefully he'll sleep it off and feel better!

I'm also taking him to the pediatrician this afternoon. Want to have all my bases covered. A neighbor may have whooping cough, so I'm being overly protective.

Here are some pics. You can see the needles in his legs, feet, and back.

  • Sorry not meaning to judge it's just I could barely make it through kiddos immunizations.

  • Oh the immunizations were WAAAAY worse! Acu needles are super super thin. He really only cried for the ones in his back. The other ones I don't think he even felt.

And I wouldn't mind even if you were judging. ;) I know acupuncture isn't the norm.
  • I don't feel anything when I get the needles unless I move a lot of course after they are put it. Is that why he cried? He was too squirmy? Or was it because he couldn't see what was going on or what?
I totally didn't even put two and two together about being still and babies not mixing well as I imagined baby getting acupuncture in my head before you described what happened.

  • You know I've never had acupuncture. What's it generally for?

Yes I think that's why he cried. And then crying made him tense up even more which made it hurt more... vicious cycle. But when I walked around outside with him he relaxed and it wasn't as bad. Again, only the ones in his back seemed to bother him. Even though he could see the other needles, they didn't bother him. This was his first experience with acu so it doesn't surprise me that he wasn't scared or anything, since he doesn't have any associations with acu.

Overall, it was a good experience. But I won't be able to really know how effective it was since I took him to the pediatrician and it turns out he has an ear infection so he's on amoxicillan (sp?).

Just about everything! The concept is that your body can get energy blockages which cause illness of different varieties. There are meridians throughout your body that energy flows through and when a channel gets blocked, it causes an issue. So for example, if there is a blockage in your lung channel (which runs all the way from your feet to your arms), you can develop a cough. There are points all over your body that correspond to different things. Like I mentioned earlier, my baby was breech, so he put needles on a point on my baby toes, and voila! Baby flipped. Quite amazing actually.

After 15 months of TTC, I 100% believe acupuncture made the difference. I went weekly for 8 weeks and we were preggo! I haven't been regularly since then but I don't see how it can hurt, except for the needles which are very very small!
