Trying to Get Pregnant

**Updated, Ahh**Soo, how's your night going?

edited October 2013 in Trying to Get Pregnant
Maybe if I tell my story I'll calm myself down before bedtime haha. Keep in mind, I live in the middle of nowhere. No neighbors.

H is on night shift and we just moved to a house that's at least double, if not bigger, than our last house. I'm a baby at night so I lock myself and the kids in a small section of the house after H leaves haha. The living room we hide out in has a front door to it, but nobody uses it, and the porch light is burnt out.

15 minutes ago, the doorbell rang. I opened the door and couldn't see anything. I said Hello, nothing. But I could hear someone in the leaves. I closed the door and sat down next to it, waiting for my heart to stop trying to explode. A couple minutes later, it rang again. Same thing happened.

I finally got the courage to crawl to our bedroom (didn't want a murderer to see me through the windows) and grabbed a flashlight. The doorbell rang again for the third time. I opened it and shined the light outside.... it was our dang dog (she's supposed to be tied up out back).

This is my life....I about died.

  • Holy shit I would've been freaking out. How did your dog manage to ring the doorbell?

Tonight is my husband's first night on night shift and I can't seem to get to bed. Normally I would've been asleep an hour ago. Sigh.

Im still trying to breathe normal again haha. She a big german shepherd. She got up on her hind legs to look in the window on the door and pawed the doorbell. Good thing she figured out how to do that at night, when H is gone. H ties her up when he leaves and I let her in when I go to bed. Its too cold here for her to stay out all night.

  • My phone was in my purse, dead! Normally I call my dad (lives 7 miles away) when I have the slightest scares... power going out, strange noise in the vents, dishwasher screeching, etc. And he hurries over to save us (obviously a total daddy's girl haha). But it was completely dead and my charger was in the other part of the house. If I was alone and didn't have my kids, I would've just hid until H got home in the morning. Seriously.

  • I almost died before I even got to the end of that story!  I used to be such a chicken sh*t when H worked nights. I'd lay in bed and my mind would be like "hey, we haven't thought about scary movies in a while...."

  • I would have also died. I have a super overactive imagination and oh God, the possibilities that would be going through my mind.

When I was in the fifth grade, I used to ride the bus home and I was alone for about 45 minutes before my older sister got home. I would sit in the living room, after calling my mom at work, and do my homework.

One day, I heard this weird sound coming from my sister's bedroom down the hall. It sounded exactly like her pencil sharpener and I FREAKED. OUT. It happened about every two minutes or so and I, in my ten year old mind, convinced myself someone was sharpening knives.

I grabbed the phone, dialed 9-1 and crawled on my belly to my sister's open door, ready to press the next one.

When I realized it was her damn BEEPER vibrating on the bookshelf, I almost shat my pants.

I have died every day waiting for you. Darling, don't be afraid, I have loved you for a thousand years. And all along I believed I would find you, time has brought your heart to me. I have loved you for a thousand years. I'll love you a thousand more.
  • I live in a populated area, but I get scared with that shit too. Sometimes I"ll open the door or investigate noises with a knife or something heavy... Not that I'd do anything but scream and drop it if someone was actually there...
  • I would've died. My DH travels every week for work, so I'm kind of used to being alone. But I have FIVE locks on my door. FIVE! I'm so paranoid.
  • A couple days ago H and I were in bed, when we heard what sounded like someone knocking. But it didn't sound like it was coming from the front door, it sounded like someone was knocking right on the other side of our bedroom wall! I immediately started praying!

H went to investigate- it was just our cat, playing with the vacuum and causing the handle to knock against the wall. SMH!

  • Haha! That's funny.  I have to say, I'm the less paranoid in the relationship.  DH locks our bedroom door when we're home together and go to bed...seriously...locks us and our dogs in our room.  Not to mention he's a hunter, so he has a master plan on how to get to a rifle quickly and get to an intruder and has told me what I'm supposed to do.  He's ridiculous. Actually kind of funny though when I don't let him freak me out!

  • There were a few factors that made me open the door..

1- I thought at that hour it was probably my dad.

2- If it wasn't, whoever it was could see us in there through the window on the door. So I couldn't really pretend I wasn't home.

3- H doesn't have service where he works, and its a semi dangerous job. I got worried something happened to him and no one could get a hold of me.

Normally, I don't answer the door at all when he's gone. Even during the day. I do have a pistol available when he's away, but I just don't see myself being brave enough to shoot anyone. I'd rather hide haha. I'm like some of you, I scare myself way too easily.

You can bet that before H goes to work, he's fixing that porch light.

  • Who's up for part two???

I'm freaking clear the fuck out. My cat just came to the same door going crazy. Hissing and growling, then sounding like he was fighting with something. I mean it was scaring the shit out of my kids and I just listening. (We couldn't find the light bulbs to fix the porch light before H left for work. We looked for an hour and a half, but all our stuff is still in boxes from moving.)

I opened the door a crack and called our cat in a couple times, but he was a ways away from the door and was too afraid to get closer. When I closed it he continued to fight with whatever was out there. Everytime I'd shine a light out the door/window I would just see the bushes move a bunch. Whatever it is, just hid when i tried to see.

I left for 5 seconds tops to take something from DS, and when I looked back outside, our cat was gone. I called for him for several different times. I went around to the back part of the house where he comes in the doggy/cat door. Hes nowhere to be found.

This happened the EXACT same time our dog came wanting to get in the front door last night. H ties her to a 250 ft zipline across the back yard, so i was confused why she was loose last night. Come to find out, she busted her collar to break free. Thats so unlike her and why in the world, if she has 250 ft to run back and forth, would she need to break her collar to get away?

I don't know what's out there, but I won't be sleeping til the morning. My heart is racing. I'm too afraid to go outside and look for my cat, its highly unlikely I'd find him anyway. We have tons of trees all around the property, I'm just hoping he had the chance to climb up one. My poor little guy:(

  • OMG that would scare the shit out of me..... I really hope your kitty is okay!

The other night, five minutes after turning the lights out, my husband lifts his head suddenly, looks towards our bedroom door and says "Oh my God, do you see that?"

I thought about it/froze for half a second, and then I literally buried my head in my pillow and said "NO!"

Turns out he was talking in his sleep (again) because he can fall asleep in two seconds. And now I feel like an idiot. Especially when people have real problems, like with El Chupacobra laying in wait outside of @chaci's house...

The made me laugh so hard. H is a sleep talker and falls asleep as soon as he hits the pillow. If he ever said that in his sleep, I'd pee the bed for sure. Then wake him up and punch him.

I'm getting closer to daylight, H and I will go see if we can find our cat as soon as he gets home from work. Luckily, he's home for the rest of the week. He was able to talk to me for 10 minutes on his 2 am lunch break last night and told me to be brave and go outside (ya, right). Tonight, I'm making him go outside;)

My two cats come and go as they please, through the doggy door. The family we got them from had them as farm cats, outside. So they love being outside at night and will meow all night long if they are stuck inside. I have just always let them do what they want.

And our GSD has a ton of energy. And I mean a ton! If she doesn't have an hour or two outside RIGHT before we go to bed, she rips the house apart. She also loves being outside at night. She'd much rather prefer outside than inside on a 24/7 basis. H runs with her before bed when he's home and she plays in the backyard when he's gone. We don't leave our animals outside by any means.

That said, we JUST moved here. Like a couple days ago. We came from having a fenced yard, and the owner has said we will get one here in due time. As far as animals, we just have coyotes in this area. (Normally) I've been around a lot of coyotes though, and know that's not what was out there last night.

Eta: Wanted to add that right now, we are so new to the property that our GSD just likes to run. If I could just let her outside without her disappearing, I would.

  • @chaci I would have freaked out too! I definitely agree with posters who said to bring that poochie inside to make you feel safer. Let him run before dark. Also I second the "stop answering the door" advice.

One time in the middle of the afternoon when DH was at work, someone rang the bell. I looked through the peephole and I'm not sure if it was my imagination, but I could have sworn the guy had a gun in his hand. I grabbed my phone and my dog, ran into the bedroom, and hid. He rang the bell again and then left. The only reason I didn't call 911 was my brain kept saying, "You didn't see a gun. It's the middle of the afternoon. What murderer would ring a doorbell, then stand there patiently with the gun plainly visible? He was holding something else and you overreacted." In hindsight, I probably should have called just to be safe.

If you just moved to the area, how do you know you only have coyotes? My state claims there are zero Mountain Lions reported or spotted yearly, but there is a website and two separate Facebook pages devoted to ML spottings around here, which occurs almost daily.

I once called animal control because I spotted a Bobcat less than 500 feet from an elementary school. They claimed there are NO Bobcats here and it would be impossible. I took a picture and forwarded it to them - they showed up 20 minutes later and kept saying someone must have had it as a pet, which is unlikely. They hinted that I shouldn't tell anyone, but to me it is a public safety thing.

Moral of the story - just because the state claims certain animals aren't around does not mean you're safe. Animals roam, especially cats. Don't chain your dog up all night - it cannot run or really defend itself from predators. Bring him inside until you get a fence.

Well, I grew up here. My childhood house where my parents live is 7 miles away, mine and H's house we just moved from is 14 minutes away.

My dogs love to eat garbage and tear up carpet. They prefer to sleep horizontally on my bed with enough room to stretch out without touching me. I am their master and they follow MY rules. Being a pet owner, you are responsible for their safety. If you cannot ensure your dog is totally safe being outside on its own, you shouldn't be leaving him out there. If your dog was ringing the doorbell trying to get a look inside the house, I'm pretty sure he wanted to be inside.
Thank you. This has been bugging the shit out of me all morning & I couldn't get my thoughts into words. It's also really dangerous to leave dogs tied up or on runs. I've known more than one person to lose a pet this way.

I let her inside. And didn't let her out after dark last night, which she absolutely hated btw. Nothing like that has ever happened before, her safety has never been in question. Its not like she came to the door trying to get in and I made her go back outside. Normally when she is scared she'll bark like crazy. She didn't bark at all that night, so I didn't even know anything was going on.

  • I don't understand why this is an only in or only out thing. I currently live in an apt so walks are different, but when I am at a house with my pets we let them in or out as they please. There is absolutely no reason for your dog to be left outside for hours on end, especially when they are clearly not being supervised at all.

I feel sad for your dog that you know what she sounds like when she is scared. The only time I have ever seen my dog scared is when its thundering and lightning outside.
This made me laugh because I KNEW someone would comment about her getting scared. So for your amusement, I'll add the things she has been afraid of in the past...

    Plastic bags
    Birds
    Our old neighbor's cat
    My sisters halloween costume
    People
    Bikes
    Boxes
    Sprinklers
    The list is endless

And endless hours on end outside? Not quite. 1-2 hours on the days H IS working (which is only 3-4 days a week) And that is not 1-2 hours without being checked on and played with.

I'm scared at night. Which to me means after dark. Which puts Nikki outside for 30 minutes in the dark max. Half the time she's inside before dark, depending on her energy level.

She also loves being outside at night. She'd much rather prefer outside than inside on a 24/7 basis. H

Sorry to disagree, but it seems like people are more concerned about the dog than the OP and her family. Lots of dogs prefer to be outside and if there is no fence then they are giving their dog the next best option. Dogs can always find a way to escape, even if they are kept inside. My lab is a true escape artist, nothing will stop her from getting to where she wants to go. Leaving a dog outside on a 250ft dog run is perfectly acceptable IMO, especially since it comes in every night. As for the OP, I am glad everything worked out, that would seriously freak me out!

  • @Luckbeababy THANK YOU!! It sure escalated quickly from two scary nights, to me neglecting my animals.

  • This seems to have turned into silliness.
Dogs are dogs. Some dogs prefer to be in. Some prefer and NEED time outside. Both of our dogs happen to be indoor dogs, but who is anyone to tell someone they shouldn't have their dog outside? My parents have always had labs. They have always been outside dogs and prefer it that way. When I still lived at home, it was really cold one night and we brought out lab in the garage. She cried and whined all night. Maybe in big cities or different areas of the country, people don't leave their dogs out and that is perfectly fine if that's your choice. But where I am, people have outside or combo indoor/outdoor dogs and no one thinks a thing about it. As long as the dogs are happy, fed, watered, and given attention. Who cares if they are in or out?
OP never said she was scared of their yard, she was just scared of night in general. She didn't think there would be something outside that her dog would need to run from. If she did, I'm sure she wouldn't have left her out.
Sorry to be so wordy but I think dog "parenting" is similar to child parenting. Whatever works best for you and your dog(s) is great and no one should judge.
    :)
  • IMHO, cat & dog in question were probably just poking their heads into their new surroundings (you did say you just moved in, right?) and some other animal got their panties in a twist. No big deal. That's what animals do. If either pet wanted to come in, they probably would have stayed at the door or come when called. If neither pet ended up with physical harm, then no big deal.

    :)

But the subtext I got was that there was some other animal lurking in the bushes trying to attack their pets. So,gee,  I don't know...I would think you wouldn't want to leave your pet outside if something was trying to attack it, but that's just me.

I took it as she didn't suspect that until the second night. So Yea, after you suspect that you shouldn't continue to leave them out in the dark. I could never forgive myself if I suspected something but left my dog out and found him malled by a coyote or somthing. I was just speaking of the fact that she originally had him outside.

Just that she was worried for her cat's life by saying she hoped it made it up a tree, and also her dog broke her damn collar she was so upset. But yeah...no big deal.

And yet, they stayed outside willingly. The dog knew what door to come in, but didn't stay there. Instead it buggers off and goes snooping some more. I love animals and all, but if they're dumb enough to pick a fight with an animal bigger than them instead of run away, that's called natural selection. And I say that not saying that her animals are stupid, but that they are animals and that they seem to be conditioned to being outside.

I say all this as a dog owner. My dog is the type that cannot be trusted outside, and I recognize that and act accordingly. But you look at all the farm dogs out there who manage to get by and get in scraps and that's just the way their lives are.

  • (having quoting issues) And if both pets are outdoor pets they should be able to take care of themselves as well. I realize it's been established that the dog is a primarily indoor dog, but if it really was in a fight with an animal that it couldn't handle (and we're talking about a german shepherd here, not a shitzhu) then I'm staying the fuck INSIDE because my health comes before my dog, especially if I'm home with children. If there is something outside that my dog can't handle, then I probably can't handle it either. Why they hell would I put my life in danger for my dog? I wouldn't, to be totally honest. I don't get in the middle of dog fights, and I'm sure not getting involved with a wild animal.

  • For as concerned as some of you ladies seem to be about the wellbeing of my animals , not one of you has asked if I found my cat and if he is ok.... Now that makes sense.
