Maybe if I tell my story I'll calm myself down before bedtime haha. Keep in mind, I live in the middle of nowhere. No neighbors.
H is on night shift and we just moved to a house that's at least double, if not bigger, than our last house. I'm a baby at night so I lock myself and the kids in a small section of the house after H leaves haha. The living room we hide out in has a front door to it, but nobody uses it, and the porch light is burnt out.
15 minutes ago, the doorbell rang. I opened the door and couldn't see anything. I said Hello, nothing. But I could hear someone in the leaves. I closed the door and sat down next to it, waiting for my heart to stop trying to explode. A couple minutes later, it rang again. Same thing happened.
I finally got the courage to crawl to our bedroom (didn't want a murderer to see me through the windows) and grabbed a flashlight. The doorbell rang again for the third time. I opened it and shined the light outside.... it was our dang dog (she's supposed to be tied up out back).
This is my life....I about died.
***Update is at the bottom of the thread***
Re: **Updated, Ahh**Soo, how's your night going?
I almost died before I even got to the end of that story! I used to be such a chicken sh*t when H worked nights. I'd lay in bed and my mind would be like "hey, we haven't thought about scary movies in a while...."
Also, glad you don't leave your dog out all night!

When I was in the fifth grade, I used to ride the bus home and I was alone for about 45 minutes before my older sister got home. I would sit in the living room, after calling my mom at work, and do my homework.
One day, I heard this weird sound coming from my sister's bedroom down the hall. It sounded exactly like her pencil sharpener and I FREAKED. OUT. It happened about every two minutes or so and I, in my ten year old mind, convinced myself someone was sharpening knives.
I grabbed the phone, dialed 9-1 and crawled on my belly to my sister's open door, ready to press the next one.
When I realized it was her damn BEEPER vibrating on the bookshelf, I almost shat my pants.

H went to investigate- it was just our cat, playing with the vacuum and causing the handle to knock against the wall. SMH!
1- I thought at that hour it was probably my dad.
2- If it wasn't, whoever it was could see us in there through the window on the door. So I couldn't really pretend I wasn't home.
3- H doesn't have service where he works, and its a semi dangerous job. I got worried something happened to him and no one could get a hold of me.
Normally, I don't answer the door at all when he's gone. Even during the day. I do have a pistol available when he's away, but I just don't see myself being brave enough to shoot anyone. I'd rather hide haha. I'm like some of you, I scare myself way too easily.
You can bet that before H goes to work, he's fixing that porch light.
When I was pregnant with DD, H had a weird shift and worked until 2am. He always texted me when he was on his way home so I wouldn't worry when I heard the door opening. One night around 4am the door bell rang. I freaked out, and decided not to answer. About 3 minutes later the door bell went crazy. DING DING DING DING DING DING DING DING...I was FREAKING out. I tried to call H, but it went straight to VM. I obviously convinced myself H had been murdered, the guy broke his phone while murdering him, and was now coming from me. I called 911.
While on the phone with 911, I was hiding in our bedroom closet with our dog (who was also cowering and shaking). The doorbell stopped ringing for a minute, and then someone came BANGING on our bedroom window!!! As I'm trying to be quiet with 911, telling them what was going one, they OPENED the window. I lost my shit, started screaming, almost peed, and then I hear... "Babe, it's me!!! it's me!!!" It was H...he had left work late, his phone had died, and he had left his house key home...
I was so embarrassed, but the 911 lady was so gentle with me, and didn't make me feel like the idiot I was....
Now we have extra house keys under our cars for these types of occasions.

I'm freaking clear the fuck out. My cat just came to the same door going crazy. Hissing and growling, then sounding like he was fighting with something. I mean it was scaring the shit out of my kids and I just listening. (We couldn't find the light bulbs to fix the porch light before H left for work. We looked for an hour and a half, but all our stuff is still in boxes from moving.)
I opened the door a crack and called our cat in a couple times, but he was a ways away from the door and was too afraid to get closer. When I closed it he continued to fight with whatever was out there. Everytime I'd shine a light out the door/window I would just see the bushes move a bunch. Whatever it is, just hid when i tried to see.
I left for 5 seconds tops to take something from DS, and when I looked back outside, our cat was gone. I called for him for several different times. I went around to the back part of the house where he comes in the doggy/cat door. Hes nowhere to be found.
This happened the EXACT same time our dog came wanting to get in the front door last night. H ties her to a 250 ft zipline across the back yard, so i was confused why she was loose last night. Come to find out, she busted her collar to break free. Thats so unlike her and why in the world, if she has 250 ft to run back and forth, would she need to break her collar to get away?
I don't know what's out there, but I won't be sleeping til the morning. My heart is racing. I'm too afraid to go outside and look for my cat, its highly unlikely I'd find him anyway. We have tons of trees all around the property, I'm just hoping he had the chance to climb up one. My poor little guy:(
Stop opening your door!!!!
I would be petrified.

I'm getting closer to daylight, H and I will go see if we can find our cat as soon as he gets home from work. Luckily, he's home for the rest of the week. He was able to talk to me for 10 minutes on his 2 am lunch break last night and told me to be brave and go outside (ya, right). Tonight, I'm making him go outside;)
Oh, and my brother and his wife and baby are moving into the basement on Sunday, so I'll have my brother here at night.. Thank goodness.
Jesus Christ, my husband does the exact same fucking thing. He'll sit up in bed and say, "What the hell IS THAT?!" in a scary whisper. Then go back to sleep in seconds while I lay there for an hour with my heart racing. WTH, husbands that talk in their sleep!!

And our GSD has a ton of energy. And I mean a ton! If she doesn't have an hour or two outside RIGHT before we go to bed, she rips the house apart. She also loves being outside at night. She'd much rather prefer outside than inside on a 24/7 basis. H runs with her before bed when he's home and she plays in the backyard when he's gone. We don't leave our animals outside by any means.
That said, we JUST moved here. Like a couple days ago. We came from having a fenced yard, and the owner has said we will get one here in due time. As far as animals, we just have coyotes in this area. (Normally) I've been around a lot of coyotes though, and know that's not what was out there last night.
Eta: Wanted to add that right now, we are so new to the property that our GSD just likes to run. If I could just let her outside without her disappearing, I would.
Well, I grew up here. My childhood house where my parents live is 7 miles away, mine and H's house we just moved from is 14 minutes away.
My dogs love to eat garbage and tear up carpet. They prefer to sleep horizontally on my bed with enough room to stretch out without touching me. I am their master and they follow MY rules. Being a pet owner, you are responsible for their safety. If you cannot ensure your dog is totally safe being outside on its own, you shouldn't be leaving him out there. If your dog was ringing the doorbell trying to get a look inside the house, I'm pretty sure he wanted to be inside.
I let her inside. And didn't let her out after dark last night, which she absolutely hated btw. Nothing like that has ever happened before, her safety has never been in question. Its not like she came to the door trying to get in and I made her go back outside. Normally when she is scared she'll bark like crazy. She didn't bark at all that night, so I didn't even know anything was going on.
Plastic bags
Birds
Our old neighbor's cat
My sisters halloween costume
People
Bikes
Boxes
Sprinklers
The list is endless
And endless hours on end outside? Not quite. 1-2 hours on the days H IS working (which is only 3-4 days a week) And that is not 1-2 hours without being checked on and played with.
I'm scared at night. Which to me means after dark. Which puts Nikki outside for 30 minutes in the dark max. Half the time she's inside before dark, depending on her energy level.
Dogs are dogs. Some dogs prefer to be in. Some prefer and NEED time outside. Both of our dogs happen to be indoor dogs, but who is anyone to tell someone they shouldn't have their dog outside? My parents have always had labs. They have always been outside dogs and prefer it that way. When I still lived at home, it was really cold one night and we brought out lab in the garage. She cried and whined all night. Maybe in big cities or different areas of the country, people don't leave their dogs out and that is perfectly fine if that's your choice. But where I am, people have outside or combo indoor/outdoor dogs and no one thinks a thing about it. As long as the dogs are happy, fed, watered, and given attention. Who cares if they are in or out?
OP never said she was scared of their yard, she was just scared of night in general. She didn't think there would be something outside that her dog would need to run from. If she did, I'm sure she wouldn't have left her out.
Sorry to be so wordy but I think dog "parenting" is similar to child parenting. Whatever works best for you and your dog(s) is great and no one should judge.

I took it as she didn't suspect that until the second night. So Yea, after you suspect that you shouldn't continue to leave them out in the dark. I could never forgive myself if I suspected something but left my dog out and found him malled by a coyote or somthing. I was just speaking of the fact that she originally had him outside.
And yet, they stayed outside willingly. The dog knew what door to come in, but didn't stay there. Instead it buggers off and goes snooping some more. I love animals and all, but if they're dumb enough to pick a fight with an animal bigger than them instead of run away, that's called natural selection. And I say that not saying that her animals are stupid, but that they are animals and that they seem to be conditioned to being outside.
I say all this as a dog owner. My dog is the type that cannot be trusted outside, and I recognize that and act accordingly. But you look at all the farm dogs out there who manage to get by and get in scraps and that's just the way their lives are.
