I had my a/s earlier as some of you read ( horrible experience btw) and now that I remembered the tech did mention that my baby was in breech position and I might need a C section by the time I deliver. I'm a FTM but isn't it too early to tell somebody those things? Like I still have a whole half of pregnancy where my baby can turn, right? I left so confuced and scared because the tech hardly talked. I went in alone because dh was at work and couldn't come along :/ and he scared me with all that at once. So my question is has anybody been told this? Or had any past experiences, what does breech even mean exackly, besides the baby's head is up instead of down? ( I'm too freaked out to even google). Any advice to ease my mind will be helpful. Thank you ladies!

  • The baby can totally move. Mine is breech also. I have been working on pelvic rocks and pregnancy squats. They are thought to change babies position. They are from Bradley method. I wouldn't be worried at this point at all!

Thank you!! I think my tech was having a bad day or something, I am beyond pissed for scaring me about a C section this early on!!
  • Mine was breech at my first A/S (18 weeks) & my doctor says they don't even start to think about trying to move the baby until 28 weeks.  She said between now & then the baby will move a lot on it's own, & there's no reason to even think about it at this point, let alone worry about it.  Hope that helps!

  • As far as I know, baby can change position nearly until the end. I've read women on here saying that they felt their baby flip as late as on the way to the hospital to deliver. I don't think you have anything to worry about :)

  • Babies can flip at pretty much anytime and they move a lot when they're still small.  My nephew was breech up until the morning of his scheduled c-section at 39 weeks, but it was a RCS so my sister wanted it anyway.

That tech sounds like an ass!  Not their job to freak people out about scheduling c-sections at 20 weeks!

  • My little one is breech position. At my 20 week a/s the tech said that she is in breech position but this early the baby can lay however she wants. She still has room to turn anytime she wants and to not worry abt it until farther along.

  • Thank you all for helping me calm my mind down with all these thoughts. He mentioned that breeched babies might have so sort of problem with the hips due to the position, then he said "but I wouldn't be one to tell you that just your doctor" . Like are you kidding me?!!?

Wow, what a moron!  I am 100% skeptical of that claim...I would have told him to shut his mouth, lol.

  • Not to worry you more, but I was a breech baby (my mom had to have a csection) and I did have hip displasia. Just had to wear a brace for the first three months of my life and I have been fine ever since. I was told this is because I was breech, but who knows for sure. Also, your baby still has plenty of time to turn at this point. Try not to worry about it this early! :)

  • 20 weeks is WAY to early to start being concerned about breech.  Babies are usually rocking and rolling in there until much later on.  My son got stuck breech around about 28 weeks, and I was told not to worry about it until I was about 35 weeks...then they started to get concerned.  I tried to have him turned (ECV) at 37 weeks but he was really stuck.  Had a c-section at 39 weeks, and we followed up with hip ultrasounds etc but he was fine.

Bottom line, the tech was a dip and should have kept her mouth shut.  My little dude was transverse for part of the study, stood on his head for a bit, then went transverse with his head to the other side.  Hopefully he has a better sense of direction than his brother.  :)
Me and my Kiwi, both 38.  We struggled with RPL and were blessed with Micah.  I'm a full custody stepmom to Ethan!

  • Third time mom here, all my baby's have been breech during the a/s scan. They typically move to the head down position during the third trimester, its doesn't matter what position they are in at this point. Ultrasound tech was either ignorant or intentionally getting you worked up. From what I understand they aren't supposed to say anything about what they see anyway, your OB would tell you if there is a problem.
  • So strange. I had my A/S yesterday and my doctor was showing us how she's practically standing straight up right now...her little feet are down by my pubic bone (knew I was feeling like I was being attacked down there lol). He said everything looks great? He didn't even bring up the term breech. He said I am one of his few patients who look to have no complications at this point.

Breech means baby's head is up, instead of down. LO has plenty of time to turn. That said mine never did. Dd was breech as my 20 week a/a and still breech at 38.5 weeks. I guess she was comfortable. Don't worry about it right now, it's far too early.

Eta- some breech babies due end up with hip problems. Dd's pedi would feel her hips every appt and we were sent for an ultrasound on her hips to make sure she didn't have it. And she didn't.

  • Dd turned between 36-37 weeks from head down to breech, so yes it's early for that! Maybe she was just throwing it out there so it could be in your thought process for info not to scare you. And certainly not all babies, not even a close majority, have hip displaysia after a c/s so please don't think it is a given. It is something your pedi will check for and may send your lo for an u/s to double check on. fWiW mine went from upside down to sideways back to upside down during my A/S. Also, if baby remained breech and you have to have a c/s, it's not the end of the world...at the end of my pregnancy they could have told me they were going to cut my head off and pull dd out of my neck and I would have said have at it!! As long as the baby and mom are safe that's what matters!
