Ouch!

LO is teething and she bit me while nursing.  I said "ouch" pretty loud and it startled her enough that she let go.  I felt bad though because she gave me the most pitiful face.  What are you doing to keep LO from biting?

Re: Ouch!

  • Ow! I have not had a biting experience yet but he's teething like crazy right now so it could happen. I read that it's helpful to have a teething ring nearby to give when that happens or to let them chew on your finger for a bit. It also said to stay calm and not have a huge reaction which seems impossible, those little teeth are so sharp!!

  • I'm curious as well! DS just popped his first tooth, so I'm sure the wonderful world of biting isn't too far away!
  • DD usually take a small bite when she latches. She has two bottoms and a top (second top is cutting now). When she latches I just grit my teeth because it's just a second. If she bites again I say "no". She usually smiles and goes back to nursing. If she bites again then I cut her off.

The worst though is when she turns her head to look at something and takes my nipple with her. I put my finger on her chin and press down and say no. She gently let's go.

The one time I hollered because it hurt REALLY bad she ended up in tears. She hasn't bit that hard since. I felt awful though.

  • DD hasn't bitten me in a while but she used to bite often. I just unlatched her as soon as she did it and ignored her for about 30 seconds. She might cry or pull at me to keep nursing but I made her wait. Finally after a few weeks she stopped.

I think that she was doing it on accident and ending the nursing session each time made her aware of it.

  • She didn't cry hard but just fussed and it was only 30 seconds. I wanted to clarify b/c it sounded bad when I re-read it. Lol

I'm a big push over for her when she is crying so it wasn't bad but I was in pain so that might have altered my perception a bit.

Also, I never said anything each time. I just silently ended the nursing session. Sometimes I would say "ouch" instinctively but I tried not to be too negative, just that we weren't going to nurse when she did that.

  • Thanks for your responses!  Since LO bit me and I yelled "ouch" that first time, it hasn't happened again.  Fingers crossed that she won't do it again!
