When is it considered too many BH?

DH and I were out of town for the past 3 days and when we got home last night laying on the couch I had tons of BH, like 15+ / hr I'd say.  I assumed I was kind of dehydrated so I chugged some fluids and went to bed and nothing eventful happened over night.  Drank lots more fluids this morning then played a tennis match, and since then I've been having them pretty constant again.  I get them quite frequently but this is even more than usual.  They aren't painful but some are definitely uncomfortable.  I know this late in pregnancy they are not uncommon, and I also know what 'real' contractions feel like and this isn't it, but I guess it's the frequency that has me a little concerned.
What have you been advised as far as BH are concerned?
DH is of course out of town so I'm hesitant to call the Dr and go in unless it's really an emergency.

Re: When is it considered too many BH?

  • First of all, kudos to you for still playing tennis. I get BH after going for walks so maybe being more active is encouraging it.

  • I'm getting them with pretty high frequency (never really had them in either pregnancy prior).
I thought 6+ and hour was too many. Yesterday my OB told me more than 4 per hour to lie down and drink water. If they still happen, call. But I also had a fall 2w ago, so that could have played into her instructions.

she did say if you're getting a lot, then you're doing too much.

  • My doctor says to call if I have more than 5 in an hour

  • My Dr said she wanted to know if I was having more than 5 an hour. I would call your office and maybe talk to a nurse, they might have you come in and do a non-stress test. Better to play it on the safe side.

  • My OB says to call after 5 painful contractions in an hour long period.  I've been getting them pretty frequently, especially after I've been active, but nothing that I would consider painful.  I've always felt that if calling will give you peace of mind, you should call.

  • I've been getting a lot of them as well, and some of them are very uncomfortable. My Dr told me that if I chug some water, lay down for an hour, and they haven't gone away, then to call.

  • 15+/hr? Is a definite call to the doctor in my book.
  • 15+ an hour? As in one every 4 minutes? I would call the doctor

Yeah that was last night, I think I was dehydrated from traveling.  Once I drank a lot of fluids and went to bed I was fine.  They just picked up again today after my match, but not to that frequency.

It's hard to say what is causing what, because I'm drinking lots of fluids which makes me have to pee a ton, but that always causes BH for me.  They seem to be slowing a bit and aren't painful so I think I'll give it some more time.

  • I would call...and RELAX! Traveling, tennis...you'll end up like me! Worn out, sick and on the couch pretty sure you're dying. It's not fun.
  • I've also been getting a lot of them, and my doctor first said call if there are more than 5 an hour, but she also said that resting and drinking water for an hour to see if they go away is fine to do first.  It's most likely due to increased activity and dehydration, but they're also more likely to increase with subsequent pregnancies.

Pay attention to how dark your urine is and keep drinking that water, and take it a little easier.  If they will go away with rest and water, I'd wait till my next appt to bring it up to the doc, but you can always call anytime for peace of mind.  She also said to pay attention to where you're feeling the tightening, and if it feels like a real contraction pushing down from the top/ tightening high up and not just down low on your bump, to call and come in.
  • I went into be monitored on Sunday for having them every 3-4 minutes. The doc just told me I have a contracting uterus and to drink more water. They aren't painful but very uncomfortable. If you are concerned I would at least call your doc.
  • I've read anywhere from 4-6 an hour to call/go to L&D.

I often have 6-8 an hour at night, but this has been happening since 18 weeks and there is no progress so I don't need to call. They check my cervix each week by ultrasound and I get an NST, so I know my contractions aren't doing anything.

My dr also said to call if I had more than 5 per hour, especially if there is any rhythm to them.

  • Thanks everyone.  They seem to have calmed down to a more normal amount for me.  I guess I just over-did it with the tennis and maybe didn't drink enough.
