NTTGPR: Skin Care Products

Would anyone mind sharing their favorite skin care products?

My skin has been extremely sensitive and in the last year I have developed hormonal acne.

What products do you use to keep your skin looking fabulous (face wash, toners, moisturizers, or even makeup!)??

TIA!

Re: NTTGPR: Skin Care Products

  • I use the sensitive oil of Olay face wash with my clarisonic 1x/day. Then I use the Neal's Yard skin care line for all my other needs. I use the beauty sleep concentrate lotion on my face and frankencense oil around my eyes every night. Once a week I use a white tea tree mask. With exception of my horrible breakout after my loss, i have pretty good skin using these products.

First, I am so sorry for your loss. T&P!

Do you have any breakouts with the Clarisonic? I have been thinking about buying one but I didn't know if it would be too much for my skin to handle.

I've been using it for almost 3 years now and I LOVE it!!!
The first week or two I did break out more than usual but after that.... Barely anything for 3 years. Seriously, your face will feel so clean.
Also, they have different brush heads (sensitive, regular and deep pore) I would recommend starting with the sensitive ones first.
I have a professional grade one that my girlfriend who worked at a spa got me but I think the Mia version is smaller and way more affordable and available at a ton of places.
A bunch of other company's have tried to mimic the product but I stand by clarisonic all the way :)
Edit: my skin is super sensitive

I use Clinique three step and I love it. I also exfoliate at least once a week. I suffer from hormonal acne also. I find that if I just wash once at night and don't do anything in the morning but makeup it helps.

    Tanning a little helps too.

That's it! I'm sold. I have to get one. I saw the Mia 2 at Sephora the other day. Thanks for mentioning what kind of brush to get because that really has been the thing keeping me from getting it. I was afraid of getting a brush that is too harsh.

Does this stuff come in an orange container? I think I have heard of it but I might be mistaken.

I use products from Paula's Choice website.  I also have sensitive and oily skin and have had breakouts for as long as I can remember in one fashion or another.  Whoever said you stop breaking out after teen years is a big fat L-I-A-R!  Anyway the products I use on a daily basis are RESIST Advanced Replenishing Toner, RESIST Anti-aging clear skin hydrator, skin balancing oil-reducing cleanser and 5% benzoyl peroxide.  I also use clinique's CC face makeup which I luuuuurve.

Side rant: Why do I continuously keep getting logged out of TB?!?! So annoying!
I'm glad you mentioned Paula's choice! I will have to look into those.

Also, I always get logged out. I can check the "keep me logged in" a hundred times a day and it still doesn't work.

  • I seem to breakout no matter what I use. Been using all organic products lately including makeup. I have noticed a difference in how oil my face is at the end of the day. If I had the time id try making my own. I second the big fat liar that said acne ends after teenage years.

  • I tend to change my face wash around... right now I'm using neutrogina foaming acne wash that reduces redness. Sometimes I use Clean n' Clear that comes in the purple container. I then use Aveeno Radiance or something or other that has 30spf sunscreen.

I use my facewash when I shower, so on non shower days I use noxzema (my highschool favorite!) acne pads. I also have Clean n' Clear super powerful spot treatments (the grey containers of clean and clear are the most heavy duty).

My face is oily and can get zits, so I clean it. Then my face dries out... so I hydrate it.... then it gets oily by midday. At work I have neutrogena BB cream for oily skin that I use on my more oily days. Just a tiny dab spread over my t-zone soaks up the oil and evens me out. It's so strange that a cream can dry your skin out! I don't wear makeup otherwise but I'm glad to get rid of 'the shine.'
  • I use the Mia as well. I did break out more the first week or two but after that my skin greatly improved. I'm not worried about aging too much, etc, but feel like my skin seems brighter and fresher when I use it. I alternate between using it with cetaphil and obagi clenziderm (heavy duty acne stuff, but I love it). Also...I swear drinking tons of water helps my skin a lot. All that said, I still get hormonal breakouts from time to time.

  • I always used Proactiv in high school/college and it worked SO well for me, never had any breakouts at all after I started using it.  Now that I'm older though it actually makes my skin worse, so it took quite a while of trial and error to find a new routine that worked for me.  Now I just use plain old water and a face cloth to clean my face, and then moisturize with cetaphil cream.  I only use Neutrogena makeup products too which has made a huge difference for me.  It took a while for my face to get used to it, a classic case of getting worse before it gets better. butI hardly break out at all now and when I do it is minimal.  My skin is so much better using just water than it ever was using any type of face wash (natural, sensitive... you name it, I've tried it).

    How's Neutrogena for coverage?
imageBaby Birthday Ticker Ticker Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • If my skin is too dry or if I'm breaking out I just take honey with a little olive oil and smear it all over my face. I leave it there while I watch a tv show or two then rinse with warm water and put on a little moisturizer. Nothing clears up my skin and makes it feel softer faster than doing that for a couple days.

If my skin is dry enough to be peeling, I add sugar to the mix to make it into an exfoliating scrub :-)
  • I use Mary Kay cleanser, moisturizer, toner, and foundation. I use gold bond ultimate healing lotion.

  • I love my Clarisonic. I use it every other day to avoid over exfoliation as I have sensitive skin too. I learned on the phone with the Clarisonic Skin Clinic -- you actually speak with medical professionals (at least that's what they told me, haha) and they recommend the acne brush head for those with sensitive skin with acne vs just the sensitive brush head. I have used both and completely agree with their suggestion. I have sensitive skin with hormonal acne. I use the Botanical Kinetics by Aveda gel cleanser followed by an application of topical Clindamycin rxed by my doctor followed by sensitive skin face lotion by Aveda. I'm pretty pleased with my skin, I still get hormonal breakouts every now and then, and the Clindamycin can make my skin oily at times, but it is loads better than before!

Is the acne brush head softer or what is the difference ? Also, how do you keep it from spreading bacteria? I read somewhere if you use it on an active breakout it will spread the bacteria and cause more. Who knows if that is even true!

I'm totally getting myself a Clarisonic for Christmas. I'm an exfoliation junkie and I think it will help but not be so harsh. I am in love with Lush products. I just really like the way they feel on my skin. Depending on the day, I use either the Coal Face soap or Herbalism face scrub followed by 9 to 5 cleansing lotion. I use the Breath of Fresh Air toner and Celestial moisturizer. If I break out I use Greased Lightening, which is like a tea tree gel you can put right on a zit and it really calms it. I have weird combination skin that is super dry on my hairline, between my brows, and around my nose, but breaks out on my chin and jawline. I also tend to get red easily. The thing I like about Lush is that, while pushy, the sales associates will give you really good samples of things to try before you buy. Also, if you like a good body scrub, their Ocean Salt is fabulous. Speaking of TB being weird: Does anyone else have their reply box coming up odd only on certain pages, it's been doing it off and on all day. It almost looks like I'm on mobile, but I'm not. And it's not saving my formatting or spacing.

  • For a couple of years I used the Bobbi brown line and it was ok but too expensive. Recently I switched to Simple skin products and I LOVE them. A coworker asked me if I was pregnant the other day because he said my skin was glowing (sadly I had to respond that it was just my moisturizer). I have been using the foaming cleaner, toner and the light moisturizer.

  • @Joy1192 Yes, I have several in rotation right now. I have hair that is both color-treated and super-fine, so I tend to switch up. I use Big (both the shampoo and conditioner) for days I want a lot of volume and I use Blousy shampoo to nourish my hair a bit. I really love the New! solid shampoo (they keep changing the name, but it's pink with cinnamon sticks), and my go to conditioners are either American Cream or Happy Happy Joy Joy. The smell really stays in your hair like perfume. I've used some of their body wash as shampoo in a pinch, and it works pretty well. I really want to try their Roots hair mask. I forgot to mention earlier that their facemasks are pretty great, I like Catastrophe Cosmetic for breakouts.

I hate not being able to see the Christmas stuff in person, I may drive to a close city that has one. Also, if you have a store in your town, right after New Year's they do a big sale where they sell off the gift boxes from the previous year for something like 50% off. You can get a ton of stuff.

I love my Clarisonic.

The acne brush is definitely softer than the sensitive one. As far as spreading bacteria, I turn the faucet on to get raging hot while I use the Clarisonic and then pop off the brush and use an anti-bac soap to clean it after I'm done each time. The brush comes with a cover that has holes in it so moisture doesn't build and create a hotbed for bacteria too. The whole routine takes me about 5 minutes. Easy peasy :-)

Thanks for the tips!! I'm so excited!

I'll put in another vote for the Clarisonic.  If price is an issue and you have no pride like me, try QVC (one of the home shopping networks).  They sometimes offer it on monthly payments. When I lived out west I never had any mold/dirt issues, but now that I'm in the humid midwest I do. I find that taking the brush head off the base and letting them dry separately helps a ton.  I do occasionally use a diluted vinegar solution and toothbrush to clean all the connecting parts.

I was on BCP and Differin (a retinoid) for acne and now that I'm off both for TTC, I'm a mess.  I was able to continue Finacea (azelaic acid 15%) because it's TTC/pregnancy approved, but I'm struggling to keep up with the zits.   *bookmarking this page*

Has anyone ever used the oil cleansing method?  The gals at Jezebel used to rave about it, but I could never bring myself to try it.

  • I was scared.to.death going off bcp after 10 years and the havoc it would wreak on my face. I haven't changed anything and so far (FX) so good. (I probably just jinxed myself.) I use Dove soap in the shower, then Pro-active. In the morning I use clean n clear and pro-active (just the serum).

I use Olay moisturizer if I need to.

  • @CrazyCornball If I'm too lazy to use the Clarisonic at night, I use only witch hazel on a cotton pad after I wash my face.  There's always makeup on the pad, and I've noticed that it helps with  breakouts a bit.

I have never gone full oil cleansing method but I have tried several oils and they didn't work too well with my skin. But I wonder if it actually does work. It makes sense in a way.
